Well, just think of all the stuff that Namco gave us with Soulcalibur 4!
Like, uh....Yoda! No, wait...destructible clothing! No, wait...a boob slider! How about small, polygonal stages with instant KO at the edges? Very half-assed tag team play? Almost naked Ivy?
Well, it's a really pretty game.
(If you can't tell, I was rather let down by the lack of actual tag team play in SC4.)
It was never going to happen, but yes.
On that note, when Tekken 6 hit consoles with terrible online it was patched within 2 weeks. The game had already been through multiple arcade releases so it was as balanced as it was going to get. Soul Calibur 4 got a quick patch on release and one more balance patch later on that was questionable at best -- it fixed things that didn't need to be fixed, which boggles the mind -- and never got an online patch. Not that the online was as bad as Tekken 6 out of the box, or that online in fighting games, especially 3D fighting games, is worth anything, but it would have been nice.
Actually, one thing that disappointed me about Soul Calibur 4 was that early builds had environmental interaction. Not on the level of DOA, but there were screenshots of pillars that would act as temporary walls in the middle of a stage before they were broken. The moving walls and unfolding stages that made it into the game were pretty neat and all, but that tease!
Still, rumours are that Soul Calibur 5 gets announced late this summer, so there's always hope.
Really? Something actually in levels? Revolutionary!
Okay, not really. But it would have been a step up from "Here's your level, if there's a wall, you hit it, if there's not one, you're KO. Enjoy!" That was a lot more acceptable 7 years ago when SC2 came out, not now.

I thought 4 was way better than 3
neither live up to how much fun I had with 2
to this day the mention of my SC2 Mitsurugi causes scrubs to scatter at the local arcade
I'm aware I played the most imba character, sorry
Eh, Mitsu was solid upper-mid tier in SC2. He wasn't imba at all.
I should have noted that the prime failing of SC3's initial console version was VC, which was a game-breaking bug. Made things nearly unplayable at higher levels unless you specifically banned its use. This was all fixed in Arcade Edition, which is WHY YOU RELEASE IN THE ARCADE FIRST.
I don't really get hyped and letdown by games but,
Resident Evil 4 was just so different from the others that I liked(REmake,RE2,RE3). It was no longer about zombies and viruses, but global world domination by not-zombies, but all of that does not really bother me. The controls were the most awful in any game I have played, I just did not feel like the character was even in the enviroment that was so much of a disconnect, even the wii controls did not help, maybe had they released a decent version on the PC with mouselook I may have liked it.
Warhammer Online, I'm not sure were it all went wrong but it came to a head when you hit t4. The most annoying thing though was lag and improper animations when you were fighting. You could never tell if you were actually casting a spell, often times the cast bar would be half full and you would cast. Everyone in t4 wanted to play serpents pass which is the worst map for a game I have played. All the world was instanced, so it did not feel connected, it was just all around bad.
My biggest recent disappointment is Dead Space. It was billed as this excellent combination of Resident Evil 4 style game mechanics and Silent Hill in space, but it was just not a fun game for me. The story was garbage, which would have been alright if it was a fun game to play; it was not. I got to a part where I had to shoot down asteroids, failed it ten times, and moved on with my life.
The Left 4 Dead games. Most boring things I ever played. There's just no content whatsoever in those things.
I don't know about that, there's content, but I would definitely say that one's enjoyment from the game comes far more from playing multi with good people, take that away and you're not left with very much.

Oh god this. I remember lines for playing L4D2 at Pax 09 and I was seriously confused by that.

I think not liking certain games is different from being 'let down', guys. I guess it's all subjective, but if the general population likes a game, and you don't... eh, I dunno. It seems wrong to call it a let down.
Spore is a let-down, but not liking L4D seems more like a difference in taste.
LFD is a fine cheese. You might like it, you might not. Spore is poop. Eat it at your own peril.
Except it looked like a PS2 game, played like a PS1 game, had no charm and was a complete chore to wade through.
Finished it in an afternoon and got rid of it.
Spot on with my feelings from playing it, fortunately I never bought it.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this one, especially since there was a rather huge nail in the coffin in it's saga recently: Phantasy Star Universe.
Phantasy Star Online sucked me in unlike any game before it was able to do, and hardly any games have been able to do since. Between DC v1, PC v2, Gamecube Ep.1 &2, and Blue Burst I poured thousands of hours into the lootfiend in me. The game may not have been the most fast paced, but something about that world held me to the screen for many sleepless nights. I can think of quite a few times where I fell asleep in class because I spent all night hunting for an elusive rare. This wasn't aided by Ep. 1 & 2 having split-screen multi. I ended up hooking quite a few of my high school friends, which led to many a sleepless night in groups, hunting elusive rares and beating the shit out of bosses that were entertaining for what they were.
Cue several years later, SEGA shows off this new thing called "Phantasy Star Universe." Nearly all of my friends and I set aside money for it as soon as we could. We fiended on all of the media we could find. PSO with more active combat, better graphics, and character customization? Dear god yes! Photon arts to spice up combat and really let the sparks fly with your special weapons? Yes please! Slowly drizzling out content that's already on the disc, which turns out to not even be that much content to begin with while letting the playerbase starve out from lack of actual updates?
...wait, what?
PSU dropped the ball on a lot of things, from boring missions that weren't any fun to grind, to weapons that didn't look all that unique or cool, to the stupid crafting/grinding system, right down to the monthly fee that went to absolutely nothing as far as I can tell. Many of my friends dropped before the first month was up, a few stayed on pretty hardcore but I found myself very disappointed by the fact that for several weeks the only special weapon was a goddamn florescent bulb. Gone were the days of hundreds of really bitchin rare weapons, and in comes the era of a bunch of garbage that some intern puked out in an afternoon.
Don't even get me started on the story mode, "The Life and Times of Ethan 'wine factory' Waber".
Sega eventually pushed out an expansion pack, which added a bit of content, new missions, areas, clothing, and weapons. But by then it was too little, too late. They still dripped content out like a leaky faucet. Even the nostalgia-based event MAG was pretty embarrassing. Internal Politics at Sega assured that the US/EU servers would be consistently a year behind the JP servers, which always had more content and missions than us. People just had enough of the bullshit, and the population dropped to a measly few hundred or something.
SOA recently pulled the plug on the PC/PS2 servers in the states, leaving the 360 version the only way to play on this side of the pond. There has been a push to get the game published on Games on Demand at a low price to draw more players in, and more power to those who want it. But I think Sega tarnished the reputation of the series too much for players to care anymore.
You could have been great, baby. I played you for about 5 months, scattered through your lifetime. But after the initial disappointment, I just never could bring myself to be comfortable with you again. PSO, I'm coming home.
Zelda's been a pretty dark series from the beginning. I think that's why so many people reacted adversely to WW's art style when they first saw it.
Their goal with Zelda from the start was to create a game that was a blend of charm and menace, and the soundtrack for the first game was the best way they were able to convey it (with the overworld theme vs. the dungeon music).
You see that? Two things. Charm. Menace.
If Wind Waker was wrong for delivering on those two fronts, people are out of their mind.
Did you ever look at the artwork for the original zelda monsters? holy shit
Yeah I hated that asteroid part as well but I enjoyed the game overall.
Those turret sections were the only parts of Dead Space I didn't like. The rest of the game was absolutely enthralling, for me.

So many people are using this thread to merely list games they disliked.
Games that others like and that you don't are not letdowns, its just different preference. This thread is about games that you were super excited about, bought, played, and realised they didn't live up to the hype.
Sure, but the hype from everyone likeing a game certainly leads towards certain expectations as to it's quality.

It's probably been mentioned but Advent Rising is the one that comes to mind for me.
So many broken promises with that game. Just awful. I keep hearing about bits here and there that sound cool from people who soldiered through, but I just couldn't bring myself to do the same.

When I think of broken promises and games, Fable comes to mind. Don't get me wrong, it turned out to be pretty good. It's just that like 90% of the stuff that good old Peter said would be in it was like no where to be found at all.

Just what I was gonna say, I didn't know about the whole Black & White fiasco (that was before fable right?) and I ate up all the hype like there was no tomorrow. I was following it years before it's release and pretty much expected it to be the shiznit... Probably mostly my fault but when it came out it wasn't even close to how it was described with no word on "Oh yeah all that cool shit we had to cut it out" what a massive letdown. At least I learned, and thats why I'm not here saying spore :P

Yeah, Black and White was first. He has the tendency to get a little ahead of himself. I guess it's good that he gets so excited about his games, but gez at some point someone needs to tell him to shut up.
So many people are using this thread to merely list games they disliked.

Huh? What one person considers a letdown or not is subjective, it very well is about preference. Some folks might just list off games they dislike, but there is a difference when someone decides to put down the reasons that the title didn't live up to standards.
It goes without saying, a game that was a letdown for you, probably wasn't something you ended up liking.
Speaking of, SiN Episodes: Emergence. I thought it was a relatively recent game when I bought it last year, but it was actually released in 2006. Made a fool of myself by not looking that up, but when I found out that was the only existing part of the game, and the production of the rest was all gone, I was quite let down. What initially felt like a lead up to some good old action like the original SiN, had suddenly become a $10 demo. Realizing that Ritual was out of the game and no more episodes were forthcoming was quite the disappointment.
Edit: Good example of dislike vs. disappointed. I bought L4D, didn't like it. Not disappointed or letdown, though, because I knew what I was getting into and stupidly bought it, anyways. The game didn't let me down, my judgment did.

Not necessarily.
I have quite a few games which didn't really live up to my expectations but were still good games.
What games didn't live up to your hype? What you'd imagined the game was/would be/were lead to believe.
So if WC3 wasn't what you wanted it to be, despite being good, what was it about WC3 that let you down? Like in my first post, Blood Money was a massive let down due to suggested or implied features, but still a good game and I'm glad to have it.
Edit: Although, it is worst letdown, not all letdowns. Suppose that means some form of nerdrage might be a required qualifier to get on the list.
It's probably been mentioned but Advent Rising is the one that comes to mind for me.
So many broken promises with that game. Just awful. I keep hearing about bits here and there that sound cool from people who soldiered through, but I just couldn't bring myself to do the same.
I think Advent Rising was a surprise hit for me. It was (still is!) literally the most buggy game I'd ever played in my entire life (10x as bad as Fallout 1 & 2 ever were), but... I really enjoyed it. I was super sad when the whole thing fell apart and we lost the sequels. One of the few games that really made me feel like my dude was turning into a goddamn [strike]Batman[/strike] badass.
devil may cry 2. I had played DMC1 near release and was so impressed with what it was that I bought 2 on day 1. My god was I pissed. I played for about an hour and returned it. Told the dude at the counter "this game sucks, can I get a refund or at least get something actually worth the $50?" to which I got something way better instead.
and then there's Halo 1. I was legitimately dissapointed. I heard it was the best game ever made and then played it after hearing about it for months. It's an FPS in space on a colorful planet.
fucking yay. By no means a bad game in any way, just...well, average.
Did anyone here get burned by Rise of the Robots? I couldn't afford to buy games at that time, but man, with as much hype as the game had before release it must've been crushing for those that paid for it.
Oh man, I remember the hype for that. Computer generated graphics, it's amazing! Then you found out you could only play as one character...
Cue several years later, SEGA shows off this new thing called "Phantasy Star Universe."
GOD DAMN IT.
Your story applies to me. Almost exactly. I don't even feel like thinking about it any further. Ugh.
And, yes, the only thing I didn't like about Advent Rising was that we didn't get the full trilogy. I went into it (a year or two late, didn't have an Xbox) still hyped, and wasn't disappointed.
Nintendo really should not have promised the second coming of OOT, because it was anything but.
Not a bad game, just an extremely mediocre one.

Y'know, Phantasy Star Universe is actually my runner-up to Spore (not Metroid Prime 2, sorry Nintendo!). I just now remembered when they were teasing people about it, they had this trailer that fucking said "Is it Phantasy Star 5?" and it was like, holy shit, are they going to reclaim the series' glory? The original series was fucking hot.
Then it turns out it's another PSO, only the artwork fucking steps away from the series' tradition (in character designs; PSO was really good about that much). And it was a made-for-children anime story. God I was so pissed. Also, Phantasy Star Zero pretty much put the nail in the coffin in the way of, "Yeah we don't have any intention of doing Phantasy Star any justice, we hate you fans."
SEGA managed to redeem themselves with Valkyria Chronicles, insomuch as showing me they've still got it. They just don't apply it to their best series.
