I just bought an SNES from one of those stores that deals in vintage games. I got Mario All-Stars for a roommate but I didn't find any of the rare goodies that I wanted to. I've played and conquered many of the more prominent games, I.E. Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasies, Secret of Mana, etc...I don't think you're going to be able to suggest a conventional title that I wouldn't have already played. So what I'm looking for are games that- and I suppose specifically RPG-ish ones -are a little rare/lesser known, possibly subtitled/translated imports? I'm interested in Ogre Battle derivatives and games like Terranimga.
I know you can help me! TYVM in advance.
As requested, a list of suggested games:

EVO is everything Spore was lacking when it comes to the evolutionary aspect. Though, I still don't understand what the fuck was going on with the end boss. Need to replay this one day.
I really apprecaite all the efforts, but the only games that I haven't beaten already that have been mentioned are Paladin's Quest and RoboTrek. I guess I haven't played any of the Breath of Fire games either, which one should I play?

The first Breath of Fire is really good. I hear good things about the 2nd but I couldn't get too far into it because the translation is terrible.
There were a lot of RPGs in the very early days of the SNES that were really good, and I'm having a hard time thinking of them.
Soul Blazer looked pretty promising when I got the chance to play it. I hate The 7th Saga but apparently some people get really into it; be forewarned it has one of the most sadistic difficulty curves found in a 16-bit RPG.
The Lufia games were alright if they haven't been mentioned, but those were pretty big.
Pilotwings was also a lot of fun, albeit not an RPG; it gets kind of neglected for being a launch title I think.
EDIT: There was also this very obscure game called Brandish that I remember hearing a lot about. It was unusual in that you had an overhead view, but you could rotate your dude to see all different angles of the walls. The controls were pretty weird but I remember Nintendo Power gushing about the story and gameplay depth. Might be worth looking up.
It's a short (I can 100% it in 4 hours now that I know the game inside out) top-down action game with RPG elements, but it's got a great soundtrack, nice colorful graphics, a very simple story with likeable characters. You're a vampire kid who fights evil cloves with his cape and a flying top hat and drink tomato juice to get HP, and some professor calls you on your cell phone when you reach a new level of experience. You can also use magic cards to cast spells on the screen. Also, one of the boss' weak point is hot chicken noodle soup. That should be enough to make anyone want to play it.
It's no Chrono Trigger, but you will enjoy it for the day or two it'll last you.
OP, when this thread is done, can you update the OP with the list of the games suggested?
haha, sure.

nthing Breath of Fire. Awesome series. I found an old friend's copy of III when I moved... I must have moved with it, and now I don't know how to get it back to him. Sadness.
I believe III is actually a PS1 game, so a SNES won't do much good. I think I and II are it. I recall enjoying III more than I, but they were both good.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

Yes, III is a PS1 game. And yes, III is really really good.
But yeah, Breath of Fire I & II are both worth playing. Though if you can't find them on the SNES, you can also get them either on the Wii VC or for the GBA.
I remember that it was a very realistic game (At the time) which I loved. I actually felt I was carrying a handgun in that game, what with the limited ammo and the very good sound effects.
I wish I could find a copy of EVO that wasn't 80-100 god damn dollars.
I unfortunately paid all that much for EVO.
ouch! I own and love EVO, but don't think it is anywhere near worth $80. level design is horrible/non-existent for at least 3/4 of the game. Too much walk right eat animal, walk left and respawn animal and eat, then repeat over and over and over until you can afford the evolution you want. But the evolution upgrades were awesome. turning into human or kick ass winged dragon was always a bonus too if you found the right combos.

I forgot about this game, too. Not an RPG but a really awesome game, and very "SNES-y" for lack of a better way to put it.
Also seconding both Breath of Fire games, and even though the third one is on PS1, you should check it out too if you can. The series has a very unique setting, lots of humor, a pretty cool game system and awesome music. BoF 3 is one of the most interesting RPGs ever in my opinion, and one of the very few that move away from the whole "Quest to destroy Big Evil Dude to save the world" model.
I loved the BoF series growing up and it's really sad that the franchise seems to have died out.

I remember liking Equinox as a kid. I have no idea how well it would stand up to the test of time, but my brother and I played that one a fair bit, and I'm going to throw it out there because it's one of those rarer RPGs that most people haven't heard of.
There were a lot of games in this thread that I've loved, but I didn't see The 7th Saga or Secret of Evermore. Those gave me hours of fun. The 7th Saga was fun, but man was it hard. I died way too much, but enjoyed the game as a whole. As for Secret of Evermore, it was Square US' take on the Mana series. We got that instead of SoM 2. It was still a lot of fun even though the alchemy system was a little of a pain.

In my opinion 1 is the best. 2 has some problems, but makes a good point of bashing Christianity.
One of my favorite games. I also like the Aerobiz series. 2 (supersonic) is better than 1.
I came into this thread intending to recommend this game. I have no idea how many hours I sunk into it.

I remember playing this when I was younger. Was it REALLY short. I seem to remember beating it in one night.

It's a lot easier on the SNES than it was on the Genesis though. Makes you feel dirty.
