just started playing last night. apparently i need to learn how to run away (was playing a caster and kept getting mowed down by a melee dps type). still pretty fun though

I dunno if practice games really teach you all that much. And much of what it does teach you is bad habits you'll have to unlearn when you start playing peeps. I'd suggest picking a free champ for the week that appeals to you, find a guide that at least gives you an idea of what that champ does, and then roll with it.
Most of the early game is mostly just maximizing cash and staying alive in the lane for xp.

if played well, veigar can do well, but be warned that he is considered one of the worst champions in the game... edging out yi and tryndamere. soraka is awesome.
that said, untill you start playing against better opponents, veigar will probably do just fine, but once you start seeing the entire other team with merc treads, you'll be cursing riot and their item team.
Well so far my record with Veigar is awesome, but I also recognize that at level 6 I'm really still playing newbie games. I love plopping down that perfect event horizon though. Who would you suggest I look at going forward?
The games I was playing with Soraka was a 5-person AT with my brother and his buddies. It worked out really well; playing a Red Mage in FFXI trained me well in the ways of the ADD caster. This week I'm mostly playing Karthus. I'm doing OK with him, but so far prefer Veigar for that type of hero. Much more consistent damage output IMO, and event horizon feels stronger than the wall.
Also, played a game as Akali. Went like 12-2-10 or something. Went frozen mallet, guinsoo, and bloodthirster. Sooo.. AD, not AP. AD gives spell vamp. What does AP give again?

Learning Veigar is fine, he's not a top tier hero but I wouldn't say he's on a level with Yi or Trynd. He's an anticaster and not many people are playing casters right now, that's all.
If you enjoy Veigar's style of play I recommend Annie or Anivia, or if you are feeling like someone with some more team utility Nunu or Gragas. Or just keep playing Veigar, you won't be frustrated due to balance issues for another month or so probably. Also you will slaughter Ryze and that is extremely satisfying.

AP gives +% magic damage.

Do merc treads work vs knockups (Janna, Alistair, Cho, Malphite, etc)? I mean, I don't think you can "speed up" that process.
I was mopping up as Janna last night. She seems to lane well with anyone, and with the shield and ult we were able to push well. I love healing up the entire team after a fight with the ult so we can push. I think I need to start taking the summoner spell that gives mana (with the improved mastery) for extra pushing power.
Also, I noticed while in a practice game as TF that if you blue card an inhibitor the card doesn't get used and you still get the extra damage. So you can literally just stand there and auto attack it down getting the extra damage every swing until you attack something else. I'm guessing that was not intended? I wish it worked on towers.
It was nice to practice as TF but I'm always scared to play as him in a real match, because the difference between a good TF and a bad one is so noticeable

Tanking Ryze's ult and then pwning him with mine was one of my favorite parts of Veigar.
I think tonight I might try Janna. She seems more along the utility lines that I prefer over almost pure damage.

It might be the best slow, but it has the same general area as event horizon, and that's a 2.5s stun at level 5. I much prefer a 2.5s stun over a 5s slow, even if it's a super-awesome one. I mostly found myself using the wall for slowing defensively though, rather than offensively... Maybe 20-80. Event horizon was probably 50-50 split.

Merc treads don't actually shut down Veigar. It just means you stop relying on Event Horizon to land Dark Matter; Event Horizon's stun is still plenty useful otherwise.
When he's tooling around with 800AP and a Void Staff you cease to care about magic resist and just start looking for ways to turn teamfights into an instant 5v4 with your ult. Veigar just needs to be played more cautiously than Annie or Anivia but he's not awful.
Fine I'll do my own work. This Akali Build would have both shiny passive thingies be up at the start of the game providing you spend your starting cash on a dorans blade.
Honestly tho I'm gonna rework it, I dont like 3 marks and the quints being shitty flat damage (though the idea was to have em both up there) 10% spell vamp is gonna be useless at the start of the game so I'd probly still buy the blade but use the dmg rune slots for movespeed, CD, or more dodge.

I'm interested in building her along the AD route, with Haunting Guise as a core item.
I'd probably make those red runes either Armor Pen or Magic Pen, btw.
Only 150ip to go before I can buy her.
Edit: Also, found a ranged hero I'm actually good with. Enjoying Ezreal a lot.
Watching a livestream and Yi's heal seems fucking stupid now. Watched a level 8 Yi at ~1/4 health activate his heal and tank a tower and was at like 90% when the heal was done. Then watched him later in the game activate his heal and sit in a Katarina ult and not even get dented.
Seems over the top.
edit.. haha, same game, at ~level 16ish this Yi was in their base, gets bandaged by Amumu and channels his heal while Amumu and Akali beat on him and Kat ults. He still almost gets away. What is this shit?

I don't have a finalized opinion, but my first impression is that nerfing a tank's surviability (not that a small nerf is unreasonable at all in the case of Feint) while giving a DPS a better survival ability seems off.
Also, first impressions on Akali:
Q - Decent enough, I guess? Under ideal circumstances, it does mad damage. As a harrass ability, it's not so hot. Not terrible, but nothing to recommend it over any other ranged ability.
W- First impression is that this is stupid and gimmicky as fuck.
E- Seems pretty solid. Scales with both and is a nice AOE.
R - Not sure what to think of this. The resource mechanic discouraged me personally from using it much.

i didn't say he was awful, i like him, it is simply the opinion of those that are "high elo" that he is weak compared to other mages based on his mechanics.
since i play amumu a lot, i honestly eat most veigars i see early so that they never get rolling. if he gets fed, he can 1-2 shot most other mages with q-r.

Hmm...I was going to buy Akali with RP if she was a 6300 hero, but I can't spend the same amount of RP on a 3150 when I can get a 6300 hero and just buy the 3150 with IP. Oh silly pricing games...
I'll just let someone else play her on my team then and see if she's worth getting. Until then...FATTY GRAGAS!!!1

Yeah I'd like to see this in action... Picked him up anyway (refused to buy him on printable) 'cause if this is true, hes going to be nuts.

Part of this game is having to learn to deal with jerkwads such as this:
Goes on to switch to Shen when noone dodges, says he won't taunt in the lane i'm in, QQs about me not jungling and surprise, surprise, calls everyone 'bad'.
God I hate patch day. Today's probably the worst with people trying out Cho'gath, Akali AND Garen.

On all auto attacks, including against towers. You'll see her normal dmg pop up then whatever your bonus adds up to will follow
edit: wow Akali is Salamander Luncheon, so much burst. Does anything happen if all 3 ninja are together?
edit2: so what's the cheapest rune / mastery combo to have both parts of her passive up at lvl 1? does the 10 from the ignite mastery apply to it?
because he sent me a nice, polite PM asking me to do so
also, he's more awesome than anyone not in that list.

but now with akali
i'm totally that guy
