This is kind of directed towards Melkster but, what's the best build order for Garen? I've seen boots > frozen mallet but i feel like i'm lacking any killing power early and mid game. I think i'm doing something wrong because I'm not making much money at all.
OK, I love playing Blitz. I feel so integral to the success of the team. Can I grab one guy to initiate the fight with them at a disadvantage?
It's like living on the edge, the entire team is going to love or hate you based on the success of a grab or two.
He does seem rather odd to build though...there are so many different opinions.
yeah blitz is awesome fun and youre right lotsa builds out there, hes my 2nd most played toon and i tend to build him towards high AP and cap cooldown reduction to get your pulls out so even if you miss one the next is up shortly
oh and ferox pm the slash too please
My new favorite character is Akali. So glad I tried her out the first week, and that I managed to get a 4 game win streak in order to buy her with IP (moved it up to a 6 game win streak with her afterwards!).
Doran's Ring + Pot > Boots 1 > Tear > Mejai's > Boots 2 > Glacial Shroud
There are 3 things to know about Ryze:
1) Anything that gives you mana gives you damage as well in the form of your Q spell
2) Anything that gives you cooldown reduction gives you damage as well. Lower cooldown on your spells mean that at max 40% cooldown reduction (4.2 and 5.4 for Q and E respectively), you can easily cycle through your spells twice.
3) Anything that gives you survivability gives you damage as well. Survivability gives you time to cycle through your spells.
Anything after Glacial Shroud matters according to what your opponent builds. Boots 2 earlier if you have trouble with movement.
I'd hesitate to recommend Mejai's all the time. I usually only recommend those kill stack items if it looks like there are 1 or 2 gankable champs on the other team.
I don't play Ryze, but I usually see him with a Rod of the Archmage, and some spell pen as well.

Hey guys, it's really fun to lose three games in a row because of leavers. Yup! I think I might start a betting pool: how long does it take before some asshole in ChopperDave's game ragequits?
Riot's leaverbusting system is a fucking joke. Report players? Yeah, like that does anything. Think I'm going to take a break from solo queue for a while.
Honestly, I want to be able to see how many leaves a person has at Champion Select. If it's over 20, I want the option to votekick him so that everyone can re-enter the queue without penalty. But I'd accept simply being able to eat a three-minute queue dodge penalty so that I could avoid those pricks.

I haven't really seen anyone ragequit in a while. There was this Soraka that rage-afk'd which amounts to the same thing pretty much, but other than that, nothing.
Maybe it's because I play LoL EU and the European side of these sorts of games are usually inhabited with much less immature gooseberts, but it's okay because it gets counter-balanced by all the French.
Yesterday, out of seven games I played, I only lost one, which was pretty amazing to me.
My last one as Pantheon was lol, because I had a Janna laning with me, and it was pretty funny.
Their Ashe kept trying to kill the bottom tower mid game, because it had a tiny bar of green left. As Pantheon, you want to keep map awareness up since your ult's good for jumping around the place, so I got two kills on her trying to get the tower. The second time she had a rally up and was trying to solo it in front of her creeps, and managed to get it maybe one shot away from death before she died. The third time, she chased me into the forest and two of her teammates show up.. while three of mine do. Bait at its finest. Needless to say, that bottom tower lived until we won.
My hardest game was my last one for the evening, as Akali, mainly beause I had two teammates who'd jungle and do crap for balls when we tried to push mid/late game, but after I proved how awesome I was with getting tripple kills and acing the team, we pushed and won.
Their Warwick was their carry, and after I killed their Ashe, he came in and we had a 1v1 late game. I wasn't used to not killing someone in four seconds by that point, so it seemed he might win cause of his lifesteal crap. But the big breasted ninja won in the end with 100 something health.
At that point their Ashe was raging, "wtf such an op champ my wards did nothing omg"
Ashe also called us tryhards, which is funny, considering it was my third game as Akali ever.
my last couple of games i have had mideons dominating. absolutely DOMINATING. they'll harass the shit out of people with spears, and being the pros they are, take boots 1 first just so they can catch up for the stun-heartseeker. then gank a lane at 6 with his ult. seen it on both my team and the enemy team lately. its getting awesome.

Your rune page is really important for Garen when it comes to early game damage. You need max armor penetration red runes and either armor penetration Quintessences or movement speed Quintessences. You'll also need all those lovely damage dealing masteries, including the armor penetration, crit, and +4% damage.
Also, take Ghost and Cleanse. Those two spells, plus Decisive Strike (movement speed boost + damage and silence on next hit), plus Judgment (spin move, does damage, keeps you from being afflicted by movement speed debuffs), will allow you to escape out of almost every terrible situation - or help you close the gap when you're hitting your Judgment.
Finally, once you begin the game take those level 1 boots and 3 health potions.
With all of the above, your Judgment should hit for a full 300 health at level 1. So, take it first! Always take Judgment first. I usually quickly grab my items as fast as I can and go straight for the brush with a teammate. PAers know to avoid it, but random pugs tend to stupidly wander in the brush - and you might be able to get a first kill or, at the very least, make them waste a flash or ghost.
Once you're laning, use your passive to your advantage. I usually spend alot of time in the brush regenning - and you won't need to go back to base for a very long time.
As far as leveling skills goes, I'd highly recommend doing the following:
From there, prioritize Ultimate->Judgment->Decisive Strike->Courage.
Your basic combo should be Decisive Strike to move in and close the distance. From here you have two choices - you can take the time to stop and hit them with the attack, silencing them and doing extra up-front damage - or you can immediately Judgment before striking them. If you think they're going to move away, you usually won't be able to stop and hit them with Decisive Strike AND hit them with all the hits of your Judgment - so I sometimes just hit Judgment and spin after them without actually stopping to strike. However, if you think that they aren't going to move - or if you think they'll stun you or immobilize you (Judgment does not get you out of immobilizing effects, despite it's tooltip) - go ahead and hit them with the strike (silence) and then try and spin. Of course, if you have a laning partner that can keep them in place (Shen is my favorite, or anyone who can stun or taunt and stay in lane for a long time, really) then go ahead and always go with striking them and then spinning.
As far as items go, I always go for Level 3 movement speed boots (Boots of Swiftness) first. Always. There is never a good reason not to go for level 3 movement speed. The reason is pretty simple: You need to be faster than almost everyone else. Speed is the key to hitting with every single spin of Judgment, it's the key to immediately marching to your target in team fights, and it's the key to getting the fuck out of dodge when things go south. Get them first, before any other items.
After you get Boots of Swiftness, I always go for a Brutalizer. The reasons are simple - it has straight, up front damage (+25) which is awesome. But more importantly, it has tons of armor penetration (+15!!), and 10% cooldown reduction. Every single one of those stats helps you out immensely - AND it builds towards Ghostblade.
After Brutalizer I usually always grab Ghostblade. It gives you yet another escape option - and "closing the distance" option. Plus, and this is important, it really helps you destroy towers quickly. If any of those outer towers are up at this point in the game, they won't be for much longer. With the Ghostblade, towers just melt before you, and thanks to your Judgment, Decisive Strike, Courage, and Summoner Spells, you will be able to escape quite easily.
After Ghostblade, that's where things vary quite a bit. Obviously, you never want to spend gold on things that give you something you don't use - mana, ability power, and magic penetration are useless to you. Prioritize damage, armor penetration, and movement speed. I almost always grab a plain ole B.F. Sword. But after that, my build varies between: Zeal/Phantom Dancer, Infinity Edge, Aegis of the Legion, and Randiun's Omen depending on the situation. A Frozen Mallet certainly isn't the worst option, but I've never bothered to get one before actually. You might find some success with it.
Also, I'm more than happy to admit that my end-game Garen is not nearly as solid as my early-game Garen. But that's probably my personal problem with just understanding the battlefield during those big end-game teamfights. I will say that my success with Garen depends wholly on my ability to perform well in the early game. If you can get a couple of kills in your lane at the beginning, plus a couple roaming kills when you get your Boots of Switness and Brutalizer, you'll have enough momentum to be just fine at the end. But if I suck at the beginning - it's really hard to climb back out.
Just one final note on your Ultimate. Don't be afraid to use it. Even if you think your teammates will accuse of stealing kills, you never know if someone will be able to get away just in the nick of time or his team mate Fiddles will Crowstorm right over you, or he's going to flash away, or whatever. Unless you are 100% certain that your team or other abilities will secure a kill, the cooldown is short enough that you can use it relatively liberally. Once I discovered this, I found that we tended to win alot more.
If you want killing power play Jax. Garen is terrible.
Butterfly's first sentence here is true. Garen is not a true carry. He's not like Pantheon or Jax or a well-played Master Yi in terms of raw killing power. But he can take a ton of damage even with no defensive items thanks to Courage (-35% damage taken and passive armor pen, magic pen) and really solid escape ability (thanks to your speed, cleanse, and immunity to slows). He can lane for a really long time without needing a Doran's Shield thanks to his passive. And he has really solid utility with one of the longest silences in the game (2.5 seconds... at level 1).
Add on the fact that he is very capable damage dealer, and I would say he's a pretty good character.
Is Mejais really worth it? Maybe I just suck but I never get a lot of stacks on it (I don't die, I just don't get a ton of kills) and even with about 100 AP the e spell only gets about 20 bonus damage.
Just because I didn't see anyone correct this, 100 AP gives Spell Flux 20 bonus damage on each bounce. Mejai's is worth it for any mage if you are going to have more than 10 stacks on it, which means don't get it until you get really good with that character. I have 50 games on Veigar and I'm just now starting to recognize when it's correct for me to buy Mejai's and when it's not.
(Basically, if you die in the first 6 levels it's not.)
not even Master Yi: Meditate Tank can handle the weinertasticness of Pantheon-Ult-On-Tower-While-Shen-Shields-In-On-Him-And-Zilean-And-Katarina-Come-From-Below-The-Tower-While-Poppy-Comes-From-The-Front
When I got my 3150 IP last night, I was a little interested in Garen, but I played it safe and got Akali since I liked how she played when she was free.
How does Garen play? I've heard that he's somewhat similiar to play as compared to Tryndamere, but those people could be dumb for all I know since they base it off the fact both have spin moves.
Others say he's like Axe from DotA with his execution Ult.
We need to get some 3v3 teams going. I want to get to level 30 and get some IP and you guys sound like you like playing the 3v3 but hate the puggers.
I know I'm still learning and get smacked in the inhouse games but I've also seen some pretty dumb stuff. including people yelling at their teammates for sucking when they've built their own champion all wrong.
EDIT: Thanks for the guidance Melkster. I'm going to try him out again later tonight.

Also, whenever I play as Pantehon I always look for oppurtune moments to gank with my ult at level 6 and the rest of the game. I've learned not to be so gung-ho with it though, as a lot of times you'll die stupidly cause of it, but then I learned that you can cancel the ult before it's too late.
IMO, if you're yelling at anyone for any reason you're playing this game wrong. The only time it's justified is if your girlfriend is bugging you and gets you ganked. Then you can yell. And choke.

I like him early because of his massive zone control in the very early game. The threat of a hit from a Garen is so massive (with proper items/runes as per my post above) that after a short while all you need to do to make them go away is hit your Decisive Strike from the brush and march towards them. If they run away, then just turn back towards the mob line and last-hit a mob for some gold. If they don't, smash them in the face and march back, or if you feel you'll do more damage with a spin, spin on them.
If you take damage, no worries. Hang back behind the mob line and regen while getting some last hits, or lurk in the brush. After 7 seconds, you'll regen .5% of your health every second - shortly, you'll be back to full.
I don't really know who else he plays like, really. I'm not as familiar with the other champions. I don't think it's like Trynd, who is way squishier than Garen, it seems like.

Maybe I'm a bad Garen, but I've had success with my play-style (80 games, 55 wins I think).
I can vouch for Melk being quite effective in the games I've seen.
But so far, one of the things I like a lot about this game is that champions CAN be effective with multiple builds. In DotA and HoN there's more or less one way to do things, with minor variations if you absolutely have to counter something on the opposing team.
Nisi and I have run into a few high-elo Garens that totally raped us, as the majority of damage he does , does not depend on damage items. His skills scale rather poorly and his ult does flat damage. He is the perfect armor / aura carrier because he can mess you up with just his base skills.
That being said, Melk's Garen is quite scary and deadly early to mid game, and he knows how to use that ult to great effect. I see no reason that for IH's / mid to low level games, why building Melk's Garen wont be incredibly effective. He is a great player and knows the character well, so following his guide is not the worst thing in the world.
Finally got enough IP to unlock karthas, he is a lot of fun. Whats even more fun is killing people with your ult and watching them bitch in chat. I had one guy just going nuts because i ult killed him 6 times. He would bitch non stop about karthas being no skill and how cheap his ult is, and i never said a word. Which probably made him more mad.

Yeah. People cry so much about Karthus. They need a good samaritan to tell them, "L2 Pot, Summoner Heal, or Banshee's Veil, LOL."

Independent of anything about OPness, these aren't exactly practical solutions. The potion has a very small chance of success (though isn't a bad idea in and of itself), Summoner Heal is something you pick before you know who you're up against, and Veil is an expensive item not suitable for everybody.

Ghost in the Linkshell Item Requisitioning
Let me know you are from PA, otherwise I will likely ignore you.
He is a great player and knows the character well, so following his guide is not the worst thing in the world.
i am so good at giving advice
also i feel dumb not knowing shen's ki strike cooldown thing even though i play him nonstop
that's probably why i kill people in teamfights so easily when i'm being focused!
I don't understand why they don't list that in the tooltip.
Also, regarding Shen's tooltips, the feint description sounds nothing like what feint actually does.

Yeah. People cry so much about Karthus. They need a good samaritan to tell them, "L2 Pot, Summoner Heal, or Banshee's Veil, LOL."
Independent of anything about OPness, these aren't exactly practical solutions. The potion has a very small chance of success (though isn't a bad idea in and of itself), Summoner Heal is something you pick before you know who you're up against, and Veil is an expensive item not suitable for everybody.
kill him, make him use the ult when it won't kill anybody, or pray to god he doesn't notice you have low health
or just play gragas...
