Not to mention that you can't fling him either, and he can then blade you for ridiculous damage. You basically have to just never get close to him. And that is annoying.

So I spent some mullah on Nidalee, and I do find her a lot of fun, maybe not as easily and instantly gratifying as Fiddlesticks (my best character so far) but has a lot of options and is great fun bouncing between animal and human forms. That spear of hers is beast, I've not played as anyone who has such a high damage move even at level 18 it takes a good chunk.
I dunno if it's because I'm not very experience but I've lost WAY more than I've won
Spear is generally something people get one rank of sometime early-ish on and then ignore until the end. Best way to play Nidalee is to max E/W and as soon as you hit 6 abuse the pounce/swipe combo which does retarded damage.

Thanks, I was struggling to find one thing to focus on and was actually choosing spear. I'll give this a go next time I play!

I always max E first with a rank in Q/W but I'm starting to realize that a rank 1 spear does so little damage that it's not worth it. I might level spear and heal concurrently and see how that works, having a finisher that doesn't rely on them being below 100hp. Especially since I don't stack much AP early (just Codex/Sheen).
A full-AP Nid with a maxed spear is a scary sight, because that .65 ratio gets multiplied by 2.5 at max range. So 500 AP would add 830ish damage to a max range spear. Ouch.
The good news is that even with it at rank 1 doing next to no damage people fear the spear and will do stupid things to dodge it when in reality you're just forcing them to dance around so you can go cougar -> pouncespam -> takedown.
my shen build involves playing shen and not even worrying about items because you automatically win
FUCK SHEN
People whining about Shen don't have the good Shen counters on the enemy team. Jax counters Shen extremely well even still. A bit less than before his recent nerf, but "a bit less" means he cannot 1v1 Shen with thousands less gold with a 100% win chance.
He's good, but I've never had the problem fighting him that other people do. It's probably because he's my most played (not enough people tank) so I know him intimately.
Well, except on TT, where he is OP as hell, but expecting balance in TT is stupid. You always have to bring your A game and top tier champions to TT.
Also, I've started really liking the gold generating items on SR now. Now that they are part of very good recipes, it's useful to build them early, then get around to upgrading them eventually. In recent games where I can get away with it, I grab both an Avarice and Heart for Shen, then upgrade them eventually.

Well, that's pretty much true, but OTOH, he counters Shen especially hard. An 8/0 Shen has to flee in panic when he sees a 3/5 Jax roll into the lane.
A lot of the hardier melee DPS (you know, not Eve) tend to work pretty well against him so long as they fight in favorable circumstances. People are just mad they can't play like terribads and not die against a good Shen.

Is there a list of heroes ranked by tier or something? I keep hearing people mention top tier heroes but having only played a few, I can't really judge that on my own. Is this somehow based on their price?
So I hate to be a noob but I played very little DotA. What's the difference between this and Heroes of Newerth? Aren't they both made by people from the DotA team? Is the one that costs $30 going to be more polished and better looking? Does that make a difference?

Huh..really? I don't run from Jax.
I have not played vs. Jax too often post the recent nerf and Feint buff, but before that it was absolutely necessary 1v1. 2v2 worked better, but I have died to a Jax in 1v1 with easily 2K more gold than him, so I stopped fighting all but the baddest of bads.

Any advice for a new player?
I played one game of HoN and got called a variety of colourful things. You get the odd 'lololnoob' in LoL but the community seems far more pleasant.
Personally, I prefer LoL to HoN but I never played DotA and LoL seems to be the easier to get into of the two.

I am kind of surprised by how few total assholes I've come across, you definitely get some but they're surprisingly few. I've actually come across almost as many people who are actually fun and cool people to play with/against.
Is there a list of heroes ranked by tier or something? I keep hearing people mention top tier heroes but having only played a few, I can't really judge that on my own. Is this somehow based on their price?
The list varies quite a bit depending on who you talk to, there's several lists on the LoL forums. It is just based on what people think the overall power of the champion is.

The fuck is this shit? This is terrible, no offense. This is especially bad as advice to a noob, as Kennen requires twice as much work as other equivalent role champions to do well.
I'll try to formulate something good for newer players later today.
Edit: Earlier than expected:
This goes by the tag system in PVPnet, and doesn't include every hero, but a selection to help assist newer players.
Good tanks for noobs: Nasus, Sion, Taric, Shen (?)
Bad tanks for noobs: Chogath, Gragas, Nunu
Good mages for noobs: Annie, Ryze
Bad mages for noobs: Anivia, Evelynn, Veigar
(lots of non-mages in here, like Chogath, but whatever)
Good fighters for noobs: Ashe, Jax, Warwick
Bad fighters for noobs: Corki, Kassadin
Good assassins for noobs: (undecided on this one)
Bad assassins for noobs: Kennen, Twisted Fate, Twitch
Good support for noobs: Kayle, Taric
Bad support for noobs: Soraka, Zilean
Most of the bad characters are either difficult to play, underpowered, or both. Twisted Fate is probably less deserving than most, but included partly because he's ridiculously good in the right hands, so taking him and not carrying is a crime against your team unless you ask first. Nunu can be easy to play, but has a lot of counter characters who might be hard to grasp at first.
There are two "tier" lists posted by top ELO players (Elementz/Tymed) on the official boards right now. If someone really wants a serious list they can go there. If you don't understand the above list then you are pretty racist.

The problem with actual tier lists is that by the time you are good enough for them to apply to you, you are generally qualified to have your own opinion. He lists Ez as Tier 1, which I would agree is true, but he's not a good newbie character due to all his skills being skillshots (abilities you have to manually aim).
