I'm afraid to play any other champion.
I'm in the same boat. Started with Trist, now with TF, and really liking the play style.
I know I should at least learn a tank (in case others beat me to Trist and TF on their free weeks), but I'm not sure who to spend my points on.
Edit: I did by Kayle since he was dirt cheap, but I'm not sure I'm that happy with him.

Kayle is a woman, but she's not a very good tank. I would either go a hybrid AP/AS build or, my personal choice, straight attack speed and damage.
Nothing like being forced to mid against Kat as Ashe and then being called noob for feeding. 'cause I sure can sit back and 'spam' level 2 volley (cooldown something like 15s, high mana consumption).

There's no justification for feeding. If you can't go out without dying, then camp the tower. As a ranged character you can keep shooting creeps from complete safety behind the tower. Sure you'll eventually lose it if nobody helps but that's a lot better than dying. Even just standing around for exp and getting no money is better than going for last hits and dying a lot.

The issue with Kat against Ashe is that Kat can spam the crap out of her abilities, and an early ashe is essentially tissue paper (She's tissue paper almost all the time anyways.) But you've got to save your volley for one of two things. A guaranteed kill on a minion (Farming gold.) or to kill/get away from a champion. If you are using volley to weaken minions or harass early (It's pointless to harass with it early.) you're doing it wrong. Bring Kat to you, take teleport, and just blue pill when you're low health. Teleport back and viola! Kat is at reduced health and you're up at max. This is going to be a swinging pendulum with Kat until late game - Don't get caught away from the tower when she gets her ult, too. Or ult her.
This all feeds into 'Zone control' too. Know what champion you're against can and can't do. Ashe is ranged, Kat isn't - Keep a comfortable distance and focus on getting gold.
On a more coherent note, I've decided Kat only works amongst players who will feed me kills, otherwise I'm better off with Annie or Sivir. People who blue pill to heal, allow me to deny them xp some, eventually shut me down. Also an abundance of stun/silence shuts Kat down.
I just started playing a couple days ago, but I'm coming from a very heavy DotA / HoN background. So far I am finding that this game is my favorite of the three.
So far I have enjoyed playing Veigar and Soraka. They will probably be my first two purchases for heroes... I can just now afford Veigar with IP and Soraka is only 450.
if played well, veigar can do well, but be warned that he is considered one of the worst champions in the game... edging out yi and tryndamere. soraka is awesome.
that said, untill you start playing against better opponents, veigar will probably do just fine, but once you start seeing the entire other team with merc treads, you'll be cursing riot and their item team.
