Or Sleep. Fantastic stuff for breaking hard to get appendages. But trying to find players who'll respect your sleeping of the enemy is generally difficult. Even telling them before hand and creating a custom shout out telling them to stop attacking they refuse to listen.
Also: What do you use to upgrade the + armours? The Armour Sphere -> Armour Sphere+ -> Adv Armour Sphere path, or do you use the newer spheres?

I'm having trouble breaking Quropeco's face. I can always break his flints, but never wound his head. Any tips? I'm guessing that's where I get these elusive Flame Sacs from, or are they a Rathalos/Rathian drop?
I'm hitting it repeatedly with either a Water element Hammer or Greatsword. Neither seem to do it.

Quru face break is for beaks. Flame sacs are indeed from the Raths.
It's amazing that as you play the game how your concepts of how to play and what weapons fit your style change.
Also, for the vets, is poison any good an an status attack modifier?
It's usually pretty worthless, but fairly powerful against a few monsters. However, most of the poison weapons are really, really good. A lot of them have a lot, if not the highest raw damage at their tier as well as a lot of sharpness and/or gem slots. In a lot of cases the poison weapon is the best choice not because poison is any good, but because the weapon is.
That sounds pretty cool, but it seems to be far more fitting for say, Gravios/Basarios/Uragaan rather than Tigrex.
You've fought Tigrex, right? It's well-known for its trample attack. In fact, the trample train is its signature attack, and it can do it up to three times in a row without stopping, changing directions at the end of each trample. Gravios and Basarios do not trample.

Trample damage usually refers to damage you take from monsters feet that doesn't cause any stagger animation on your character. Gravios in particular did quite a bit of trample damage in previous versions.

Hey all, just wanted to reiterate proper hunting etiquette that was mentioned in the opening post. I think it's common courtesy and just an all-around good idea to LEAVE THE TAIL CARVE ALONE until the monster zones, is sleeping, or is otherwise incapacitated.
Last night, I was running with a group that consisted of two players who, during every quest, tried to carve tails immediately after they were severed. It was really frustrating to see such rookie moves from hunters ranked 25+.
First off, the tail stays there and won't disappear for the duration of the quest until it's over. Second, you'll be leaving yourself wide open for an attack if you carve the tail while the monster is still there; not once, but TWICE I saw this happen to fellow party members where they hunched over for the carve and then got knocked on their asses because they thought they could sneak in the carve. Your time is spent better dodging attacks or contributing with attacks rather than leaving yourself open to get rolled on during a carve like that.
Apologies for venting, but it's just something all hunters should be aware of. Don't be greedy and support the team!

On this topic, the EU crew was rocking a quick R.Ludroth fight last night . Not really any challenge, larking around abounded. When the tail falls we all simultaneously drop to our knees to carve and with a group 'Uh Oh!' can only watch as R.Ludroth spins a 180 and steamrollers all four of us in one charge. Of course we could happily take the hit so much laughter followed.
To add onto that. Don't run near others if they are healing or sharpening or a gunner. All it does is double the chances you are going to get steamrolled as well as them.
And the base Bone Axe has more power than my Bone Blade +, which is a Greatsword.
I am so glad I got this thing. It was worth getting all that Monster Fluid.
And it's taught me a valuable lesson. The ability to dodge at the right moment is worth far more than a powerful shield. The Lance is still very awesome, but I nearly died to the Qurupeco because its little backstep is not enough to dodge its little "jump and fire explosion" move.
So, I'm not sure which fighting style I want to use more. Lance makes me feel invincible, but Switch Axe makes me feel like a freaking badass.

That's why you use the forward rush hop thing. Fire explosion doesn't hit you if you're under him.

Oh right. That thing where you're guarding, press forward, and hit A. And pressing A again does a shield bash, but you don't need to do that.
Yeah. I just need to get the hang of it, but it's basically the same as any other dodge jump, ain't it.
Yeah, I'll keep upgrading my Lance. But I'll also keep going with the Switch Axe because sometimes overwhelming power is great. (Plus, you know, it's an AXE that can SWITCH to a SWORD that EXPLODES)
Speaking of the lance, I have a Knight Lance now. Should I go ore-hunting and upgrade to a Rampart? Or should I wait until I can harvest stuff from the Lagiacrus to get an Acrus Lance?

Sooo, after looking here, it seems the only way to get Quropeco Scales is to kill and carve it? I was sure I got some from Captures.
I have no idea what is best to do, capture or kill. I can't find any info on a comparison.
Also, Klyka. Maybe I should get on Vent and talk at you, see what you're doing. I've done like 2 missons online, though. Won't that severely limit what we could do?
Last I heard, capture and kill yield the same amount of items when you count carves + quest rewards. The thing is, if you capture it you get a chance to get the special carves. For instance, Face Smashing Rewards without smashing its face.
yea i kind of love teh switch axe. it seems way more fluid to me than the other giant weapons. i am trying to upgrade to teh bone axe + but need to find some medium monster bones

You can get them from Rhenoplos in the desert/tundra.

the switch axe is amazing. It can be annoying for your teammates sometimes (*cough* all the time) but you just can't beat it.
I mean, I finally got all the barroth claws+ that I need to upgraded my para SA to it's final form. It now does 1026 damage. o_O
smashes faces and chops tails like nobody's business.
Holleeee crap. Just got a new 46" lcd this weekend, fired up Tri and man is it beeeeauuutifullll. Apparently the new TV scales or whatever a hell of a lot better than the old one. It looks like a different game entirely.
It's a shame that I've been busy hunting larger game on LP2 instead of Tri. And I hear that the Wild West is gonna be needing some taming today. Too many games! A blessing and a curse!
And do you need a slashing weapon (as in, not a hammer or lance) to do it?
...how do you do it, exactly?
Royal Ludroth and Lagiacrus are the two where I've actually managed it so far, but you can do it to pretty much anything with a tail. Just beat the hell out of it with a blade weapon until it falls off. In some cases it can be really helpful since a tail swipe that would have smacked you suddenly has a much shorter range.
Right. So I'm gonna have to pay more attention to what I attack.
The game is surprisingly complex in some areas.

In not so recent news, Slicing Shots are garbage for cutting off tails.
Maybe if there was a skill that lets you know when they're able to be cut off, otherwise you have no way of knowing just when that shot is going to do what it's supposed to do.

If you guys aren't full I should be on in half an hour. Don't have Vent though...
And christ, Quropeco flees to 8, where I normally catch him, and RATHIAN also turns up there.
Edit: Oh yay, Rathian killed it. Fffffff.

Maybe I want to use it in Axe mode since axes are rad, but there is no reason for me to do so.
It's a shame that I've been busy hunting larger game on LP2 instead of Tri. And I hear that the Wild West is gonna be needing some taming today. Too many games! A blessing and a curse!
but the axe mode has the ultimate tail-severing attack (uppercut swing, + button), not to mention the downward swing, which is also brutal.
but yeah, you wanna be careful because you WILL smack your teammates around and/or lock yourself into a long swinging animation.
sword mode is safer, plus it has exploding charge attack

Lance works just fine for cutting tails. Lance will either be impact/cutting based on whatever will do the most damage.
To cut a tail, you just attack it with cutting damage weapons until it falls off.
