Resolution problems.

Just wiped and installed Windows XP 64. After installing my ATI drivers, my desktop for some reason is skewing the resolution. I always ran on 1280 X 800 before, and it would adjust just fine. Now when I try to change it to 1280 X 800 the desktop doesn't adjust it, and my start button is cut-off. What gives?

Meh, for whatever reason 1440 X 900 works fine, so I just switched it to that and changed the DPI ratio to 150%. Never-mind, but thanks.

If it's an LCD (which is probable from the aspect ratio of the resolutions you are describing), you should run it at as high of resolution as possible, that should be the native resolution of the panel.

OK, but why should I exactly? What are the pros?

It'll look much better and performance will be improved.

Something to do with LCDs not scaling alternate resolutions properly, so they look terrible, if I remember correctly.

This is coming from a guy with an LCD at 1360x768

My mom's eyesight isn't that great, so I got her a 42" LCD HDTV to use as a monitor, and after I set it up she tried to lower the resolution to make everything "bigger" (text, images, etc). It turned her desktop into a blurry mess, so I showed her how to keep the resolution high while changes other settings within Windows to increase the size and visibility of text and everything looked crisp.

This is essentially what I just did, and I think you all for helping to correct what has been consistent user error for a handful of years now. Got more out of this thread than I expected. Thanks again.
