Okay, so I beat Red today, went to oak after the reset and got my bulbasaur. Now if I'm understanding correctly I can also go to the Silph Co. building and talk to Steven and get a Hoenn Starter, as well as get an orb to release Groudon with from Oak; however even after several restarts, Steven is in the Silph Co. building and Oak just evauluates my pokedex.

Did you first talk to Steven in the Pewter City Museum?
You get the Orb from Mr. Pokemon on Rt. 30 not from Oak.

For Steven, you have to have done the magnet pass quest so that the Lati of your version has been released into the wild.
And it's Mr. Pokemon on Route 30 that gives you the first orb for Groudon. Once you get both legendaries, you can show them to Oak (which lets you get Rayquazza).

Lame. My wife and I only have 1 DS between us, but she was interested in pokemon. I figured itd be cool cause we could still use the GTS to trade with each other.

Nintendos gotta be butts about it. And even if you put a HG pokemon on the GTS, and pop in your platinum cart, you cant retrieve it cause its from the same DS. Jerks.

So I just discovered that pokemon seen in the battle frontier don't count toward your pokedex, wtf. This is going to make filling that thing out much harder.

Quadros, I'm not sure if you're on tonight, but I have both a chicorita and a totodile (who was born knowing surf, whirlpool, and hail...not bad) if you want one for that chimchar. Let me know.
You just catch a bunch and sort it out afterwards. What else can you do?
Though, if they're above level 20 or maybe 23 they don't know Teleport anymore.
Also, you would have a hard time testing for Early Bird. Just cause they wake up quick, or just because they don't, doesn't really tell you much.
Anyway this reminds me, I have an Adamant, Careful and Hasty Sync Natu if anyone wants them.
I was lucky enough to get the Jolly Natu that I needed.
AND I'm going to have a box full of Zubats with BraveBird Roost U-Turn and QuickAttack if anybody wants one. They should be Jolly mostly.
