You can probably find a reader for SD Media for a few of your currency units. They run around $5 in the US. I had to format mine before the Wii would like it, too. Also, I had to copy Wii data to it once before it would read photos. It creates a folder structure the first time something is copied to it.
Also, check the Lock switch on the side of the card. They have a lock like floppy disks do.
Also, the Wii does not like SD cards with capacity > 2 GB. At all. It can read from them but will not write to them.
Was is everyone runnign out to get SD cards as soon as they get a Wii? are you really filling up your internal 512 megs that fast? SD cards are only going to go down in price, so it seems kind of pointless to buy one until you actually need it.

The user only has access to 256 MB of memory for saving stuff on the Wii, and the Web browser is 32 MB of that, right away. I've used 64 MB already between the browser and a handful of VC games already. It really isn't as bottomless as it seems.
Plus, I bought mine to make backups of game saves as well.

I picked one up because a 1GB card was on sale at Best Buy for $15.
EDIT: Speaking of SD cards, is there any way to transfer GCN saves to my SD card so that I can transfer them to PC to avoid buying another GCN memory card?

Unfortunately, no there isn't. When playing Cube games, the Wii doesn't even see the SD card slot.

Am I wrong to assume that the white GC Memory Card isn't enough space? That's like 10 grey cards, isn't it?

I have a black one (the 251), and I didn't want the Cube to access it, I wanted to be able to shuffle them back and forth through the data manager. I was hoping that maybe I just missed something obvious.
I'm looking for something analagous to the PS2 memory manager. I can store PS1 saves on my PS2 card, but I can't read them off of it while playing a PS1 game, and that doesn't bug me. I just want the storage option.

Soundtracks in Excite Truck. It becomes a whole new game.

It really, really does. I have an SD card filled with the Foo Fighters new live album, Stone Sour, Breaking Benjamin, and, get this, the Buzz Ballads compilation CD that you see on TV. The songs range from perfect to hilariously inappropriate for a rocket-truck arcade racer. Sure, it's easy to feel like a badass with driving rock playing, but try to keep it going when Vertical Horizon or Marcy's Playground come on randomly. I really hope more games keep the soundtrack option. It's really excellent. Random is great most of the time, but I especially love how it remembers what songs you assign to what tracks if you pick one randomly.
I also like when the game starts to sync with the music eerily well. Unfortunately, it's just a coincidence (no matter how much I dream otherwise). Once the illusion breaks, I'm left craving some sort of music/rhythm/driving game. Are you listening developers?

I'm having a similar problem. I bought a 2GB SD card from Best Buy on black friday. It works fine in the Wii, but I have yet to be able to actually mount it on any PC. It worked fine in another Wii as well, but refuses to be read by any SD card reader I've gotten my hands on.

Everything is better with Yakety Sax (aka the Benny Hill theme).
I've actually bought an SD card and a card reader for the express purpose of doing this custom soundtrack thing ... whenever I acquire Excite Truck, anyway. :P
Yeah I'm really not sure about this, other than what other people have suggested. Since you haven't had any saved information on it you shouldn't have to worry losing anything.
Also, I went into an EBstop the other day and asked if they had any SD cards, and they didn't, but he went on to tell me that they wouldn't work in anything but the Wii. He says they're a bit larger than normal SD cards and won't fit in a normal SD slot.

Halo 3 TV ad.
I'm a sucker for irony.
