Hello I am a TurboGrafx-16

Before anyone asks, the Turbo is pretty much the raddest system in town. The THREAD STAYS.
Neo Rasa on

The Turbo is an amazing piece of work, sadly a few major mistakes were made for its US debut.
First off, by the time it actually came here the SNES hype was already in place.
Second, they'd pass up on no-brainer hits like localizing Street Fighter or being the exclusive system for Mortal Kombat but then bring over stinkers like Kato and Ken/JJ and Jeff.
Thirdly, the system itself was cheap at release ($199.99 if my memory serves me correctly) but it was add-on city if you wanted to actually do anything. It only had one controller port you needed to buy a multitap. It could only display RF output so you needed an add-on to get AV out, and so on.
HOWEVER. It is the ONLY system that exists to have a successful peripheral so far (unless you want to count the XBox 360 hard drive since that's totally optional). The Turbo CD is a marvelous thing because unlike the SegaCD and Jaguar CD, Hudson/NEC actually MADE GAMES FOR IT.
It's the definitive system to play the best Hudson shmups, Wonder Boy is all over this system too. Plus the Turbo Grafx is the only system on the planet on which you can play BLOODY WOLF, part two in Data Easts gameplay-connected "trilogy" of HEAVY BARREL, BLOODY WOLF, and THUNDER ZONE, three of the most badass games that have ever existed in the history of time and space. There's also this little franchise called Ys you may or may not have heard of.
What an awesome system. Anyone who enjoys fast paced games should go out of their way to gain the capability to play HuCards (the totally awesome "cartridges" used by the main system) and Turbo CD games. This way YOU TOO could understand the arranged soundtrack for Ys III: Wanderers from Ys while playing the game, the unstoppable caliber of Dracula X, and many more.

The virtual console is pretty much the perfect opportunity for the US to finally get to play Rondo of Blood
Many a time I have considered buying a japanese duo just to play it
noooo neo rasa, don't call it dracula x! people will think it has something to do with the shit assed snes game of the same name!
But that's ITS NAME. :x
Honestly I'm torn here. The Japanese Dracula X is an amazingly superior game to the SNES "version," yet the SNES version has a cooler and more challenging Dracula fight at the end.
Whatever, Turbo version destroys it anyway.
They kept saying the Virtual Console would eventually support CD games, there hasn't been a peep about that though. THAT said, any time anyone inquires about it on the Hudson forums (both here and supposedly in Japan too) they seem to get answered with a "Not YET ^_~ ^_~" type response that makes me hopeful.
The ideal scenario of course would be that if it offers downloads for cd systems, it also lets you just pop your TurboCD or SegaCD game into the slot.

I'm hugging my personal turbo express, thanking the gods for high drain rechargeable batteries finally after all these years.
The Turbo Express would have been the best portable ever made if it had a longer battery life. Modern technology has made this a moot point.
Bloody Wolf on the GBA? No.
Dragon's Trap on PSP? No.
Blazing Lazers on DS? No.
Turbo Express has it covered.

If you have a US Duo you could play it without any adapter. It's not an Arcade CD-ROM². If you have a 16+CDROM you'd just need the Japanese Super CD-ROM² HuCard/Turbo chip.
Oh, and shame on the OP for no picture of the Duo.

oh my god
oh my god that is the best news i have heard in ten thousand years
it is going to be a fucking task to get ahold of this fucking game
Knob: In addition to Mordrack's posts, if you get the right region combination of systems and cd system cards you should be able to get just about anything to work on a single system. I believe the ideal scenario though is to get a Japanese Duo, and a US TG-16 (for just US HuCards) and then you've got access to it all.
Oh man, the ARCADE FEEL. I miss when that was the defining quality of any action game. As at the time the games looking and sounding like they did in the arcades wasn't even possible, UNTIL THE TURBO GRAFX CAME OUT.
I fucking love the Turbo, the Neo Geo, all the ARCADE-centric systems. I have a shelf of them next to my tv, I play those more than my Wii/360/PS2 combined. The adrenaline of Magician Lord, Raiden, Sengoku, Bloody Wolf, the unstoppable rocking out of anything with Ys in the title; very few games on other systems touch this.

Just keep in mind that you may still have to hunt down a few system cards if you really want it to be able to play EVERY type of cd game, but for the most part you should be good to go.

I really think the next comic should be the cops gunning Johnny Turbo down for, you know, jumping into a crowd of people selling video games and shooting them (in front of the children).
On second thought, I guess it's alright because after all they were claiming to be the first CD based game system and thats obviously not true.

Obviously, if you actually saw the file the boss had the name of their master plan was "Pissing in the Wind."
Of course when "Feka" later employed such tactics as having Segata Sanshiro break kids necks for WALKING AROUND OUTSIDE, in retrospect Johnny Turbo is Mother Thereasa. At least he strikes at the source: Inferior CD add ons.

The Turbo Duo corrected much of that add-on stuff but by then it was too late, SNES and Genesis were off and the price was much higher since optical tech was pricey back then.
I recall the Turbo being expensive though? maybe it was the CDN/US exhange rate then or somthing.

Exactly, Japanese Duo + USTG16 is the way to go to not have to worry about adapters and other stuff.
It just offers the 100% coverage in the event you ever import some hidden gems that don't work properly without the EXACT combination of card/system like Efera & Jiliora or Fatal Fury Special.

The Turbo CD addon launched at $400 US, which is unreal, especially considering it was an addon.
It wasn't long before they dropped it to $300, which helped but still wasn't great.
Finally they rolled out the Duo, which I believe was either $250 or $300. It was reasonable considering what you were getting, but it came too late and the system died.
Also the fact that all of the best turbo cd games never got released outside of japan was a pretty big nail in the coffin
I recall the Turbo being expensive though? maybe it was the CDN/US exhange rate then or somthing.
I believe HuCard system itself was $200 but there were pack-ins and bundles that involved, well, Keith Courage in Alpha Zones.
That was another huge mistake, you've got a system that has BLOODY WOLF on it and what's your pack-in?
Shame they didn't consolidate the system variants in the US sooner, that stuff sells in Japan but here it's just universally regarded as screwing us over.

I could have sworn there was an import adapter that had Arcade CD-ROM² and HuCard support.

Actually the TurboDuo packin gave you Ys I & II, a 3-in-one disc with Gate of Thunder, Bonk's Adventure, and Bonk's Revenge (plus Bomberman '93 as an easter egg), and a random HuCard game
you got a fuckin' shitload of games with your system

There is, it's just the neurotic in me doesn't want to be locked out of any potential game down the road. Art of Fighting CD as an example seems to give a ton of graphical issues if you don't have an Arcade Card specifically in a Japanese cd system. :?
The adapters work great overall, I just keep pointing this out since there likely are a few more super obscure games that use some odd graphical trickery or other that doesn't quite work when not run in its natural habitat.
Knob that cd bundle is unbelievable. Only a chump doesn't own a Turbo CD.
