I'm looking for an HD camera for around 1000 bucks CAD. Anyone have any recommendations? I want to use it for shooting short films/maybe feature length. Finished Uni this term and no longer have access to the schools cameras. Needs to do 24p

Any help would be nice thanks.

Check out the Canon HV40, its widely regarded as one of the better prosumer HD cams. Even has its own dedicated forum: http://www.hv20.com

I use the HV30 which is basically just an older version of the HV40 and I couldn't be more happy with it.

Agreed; I have it (the 20), and it's everything I need. You should be sure to get the shotgun mic attachment for it, too, and combined you should be able to get it from Amazon for around $650-700.

Have you guys heard anything good about the Canon HF-S200? I can get one of those on a payment plan and it seems to be from the same line as the one you recommend?

I knew a guy with one of the HF series cameras. They are pretty similar for the most part. The biggest difference would be that the HF series uses memory cards to store footage, while the HV series uses tapes. So, it pretty much becomes a matter of preference of what you want to record your footage on to. With tapes, you will need to buy them from time to time, but storage is easy as you can stash 'em away anywhere + you will always have that footage available and it's almost impossible to lose. Memory cards, however, have to wiped once they are full so you will have to either have a huge hard drive or an external hard drive for storage of said footage, which I suppose is always at risk of loss. Storing footage also takes up a TON of space on your computer.
