Theres a 8x10 canvas here at my parents while I'm housesitting. A cute little acrylic set and some really shitty brushes. Trying to decide what to paint while I am here.
Buying a new phone, driving myself nuts trying to figure out the best call plan. So far the only thing I can conclude is this would all be much cheaper and simpler if I lived in the UK.
edit: actually at this point I'm seriously wondering what the UK roaming plans are like. Could I justify popping over to london to buy a phone?

Real Time IM is like mind-reading but for AIM. They can see everything you are typing and backspacing and correctly fixing. I am glad I know of this, I'm one of those who type giant paragraphs then erase them and condense into a small sentence.

Good lord do I ever not want that. To me the primary benefits of conversing through type is having a couple extra seconds of thinking time, and having the ability to fix/correct/edit things before sending it off, so I can say what I want to say, rather than just the first thing that comes to mind. If I wanted to have people witness me bumbling over my words, I'd just pick up the phone!
Reminds me of real-time telnet shells in the 80s and very early 90s. Except it was never exactly real time, there were always odd lags. Also it was almost impossible to delete things so between those two things everything was full of typos.
it isn't really entirely synthetic though- they replaced the original genome
all the extragenetic material was part of the original cell
Two years ago, the team chemically synthesized a bacterial genome. Next, they successfully transplanted the genome of one bacterium into another bacterium. Now, they have combined those two steps, "starting with a digital code in a computer, building the chromosome from four bottles of chemicals, assembling that chromosome in yeast and transplanting it into a recipient bacterial cell,"
It's a big deal. It means that--when the bacterial genome is fully understood--scientists can create a bacterium that does whatever they want it to do.
Of course the bioinformatics part is the really hard part.

it's just not as big a deal as the title would suggest
I've talked to my parents, and they're going to give me 500 euros to help me buy a Cintiq. I'll still have to supply the other 1500, but I'm good for it.
I'm also planning on getting a new computer, fuck yes.
what they've done is convert a truck into a schoolbus
I don't like the metaphor (granted, I don't like Venter's oversimplification either). They did something amazing, but the next step is to understand the bacterial DNA. But again, that's the hard part.
Yep. She's 21, and I turn 29 this November. It really doesn't affect us, though. Really the biggest difference between us is the fact that she grew up in the dawning N64 gaming era, whereas I remember playing a Coleco, so we disagree on what we define "classic gaming."

The good news is that at least you don't have to watch me. Because I am now also broadcasting in the same chatroom in the top window.
Well noted. Thanks for the heads up Tam! This will save my life one day I know it.

Too late, goldfish.

oh god such nice weather outsideeee so much work todo....
The last and only time I tried doing voice chatting over the internets (vent), I was roundly mocked by the group for being too quiet.
Amazingly, making me more uncomfortable didn't produce the effect of making me want to speak up more!

you're only 1/3 my age plus my age older than me.
That's not old at all!
Oh crap, why haven't I heard about this?! That's so amazing!
Hooray science!
edit: Yeah Napp, that makes no sense.

edit: of course, that's Craig Venter for you

You're fine
Edited for added creep factor!
Also, I am 21.
Well, to tell the truth, older girls are better.
Yes, but we all know I could snap you like a twig.
My fiance's 8 years younger than me. It always makes me feel old. She also never lets me forget how old I am. Lovingly, of course, but still.

Peter, that's quite an age gap.
A 12 year old girl could snap me like a twig.... not that into that sort of thing.... yeah....that came out wrong...
Edit: peter, my gf is 7 years older than me. When I met her parents for the first time they asked if I was her student....
no no,
1/3 of my age (21) = 7
plus my age 21 = 28
Which is just a couple years off by I didn't really want to figure out all the math to get to the right faction needed.
Cause I'm lazy.

Oh, I totally know that!
Nope. It is a more advanced society. You can basically do anything at 18, if I recall correctly.
Yes, but what you SAID was
which is: 1/3 (my age) + (my age) = how much you are older than (my age)
or in other words, 1/3x + x = 30 - x.
What you meant to say was just "1/3 my age plus my age". The last bit screwed it up.
