Quick question for those fortunate enough to be blessed with the bundle of joy we call the DS. Are there any good racing games yet ASIDE FROM MARIO KART?
I liked Asphalt Urban GT at launch, but it just doesn't hold up as well anymore. I know that there was a decent Need for Speed game recently and that Asphalt Urban 2 just hit. Has anybody played them to know if they're really that good?
I just feel the need for a fun arcade racer, but again, not Mario Kart.
I would be curious as well, actually. Have mario kart, and I occasionally look at the random racer coming up, but I never find much on them save for site reviews (Gamespot) etc. You might want to check there, but I wouldn't always rely on reviews to judge a title, obviously.

Snowboard Kids DS is to be avoided. The only title in my library I regret.
Maybe you can wait until Diddy Kong Racing DS comes out?
Edit: Beated.
Is it really that bad? I played Snowboard Kids on the N64 with some friends a few weeks ago and it was a ton of fun, even with blocky graphics and a choppy framerate. I was considering SKDS because of it.
I think Mario Kart DS is overrated since it was one of the first (if not the first) online title.
You're a MADMAN.
No, trying to play Mario Kart on a D pad rather than with analog is painful.
Say wha? Pretty much everyone agrees the SNES & DS Mario Karts are far superior to the N64 & GC iterations.
I'd always thought the N64 version of Mario Kart was the highlight of that franchise. It built upon the SNES version in a constructive way that was failed to be reproduced with the GC version, which felt liek a short-lived gimmick.
Also, a quick search of IGN and Gamespot reveals a surprising dearth of racing for the DS. Seems like a missed opportunity.

Trust me, it plays nothing like the N64 versions. I bought it under the same merits, and it's an abomination to the series.

My friends decided within the first 10 minutes of playing the GC version that the 64 was superior and I definately have had a better time playing the 64 version than the DS version.
Playing WiFi is cool for a while, but I miss the awesome 64 multiplayer maps which the GC and DS didn't provide.
That does sound cool. The multi isn't online, is it?
90% sure it's not. You could tell by looking at the front of the box.
I'd be more concerned with single-cart multi but I doubt it has that either since the original didn't. Looks great just in terms of being a racer, though. I'm a sucker for games with a career mode, tons of minor upgrades and a garage to fill.

It's not a good game, at least in my opinion. The race physics are just all over the place, handling is a bitch, and there's the worst rubber-banding I've ever seen in racing game.

Yeah, I picked up Asphalt Urban GT 2 on a whim and considered myself burned. It's a terrible game.
Give that GBA slot a workout if you don't already have both of those games.
Man Racing Gears was the bomb, that game seriously kicked ass.
Didn't Orbital announce a sequel a good while back, what's happening with that? Their official site still says coming soon. And I'm still waiting for their Pirate Battle game.
I defy anyone to go back and play MK64 now without their eyes hurting. I generally poo-poo people who can't cope with the first generation of 3D graphics, but MK64 is truly painful with its speed.
I really dislike Mario Kart 64. Unlike every other entry in the series, I think the tracks are boring and the handling sucks. The tracks in MKDS from MK64 are by far the worst in the game. Barren, boring, and overly long. My friends and I grew tired of MK64 very quickly in favor of Snowboard Kids (which I'm now hearing had a DS port I didn't know about, and that port sucks, so it's good I never saw it in a store).
Between Mario Party 1, Smash Bros, Snowboard Kids, Bomberman 64, Battle Tanx, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Starfox 64 (admittedly also short-lived), and, hell, even Monopoly for N64, Mario Kart 64 barely got touched. I'll admit that it's battle mode was good though. If it wasn't Toad Turnpike, it was block fort.
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
The Micro Machines racers have always been simple but fun novelty approach to arcade racing. Given their simplicity, they would be ideal for hand-held gaming, so the upcoming Micro Machines V4 might be worth a look.
Previous iterations of the game were at there most fun in multiplayer, so I'm reasonably optimistic about this one if it comes in early Feb. Will it compare to MKDS? Probably not.

It's fairly brown. Awful game.
The DS just isn't a good platform for racers.
So there.

It's a port of the N64 Ridge Racer. If you liked that, you'll like the DS version.
