A friend of mine just came to the realisation that how his voice sounds to him, isn't what it sounds like to the rest of us, and had a mini breakdown on ventrilo. It was quite humorous to begin with, but now I think he's really gotten fixated on the issue. To the point where he thinks people are talking about how stupid his voice sounds behind his back.
So.
I have a fairly pronounced north eastern english accent. (more specifically mackem, but nobody outside of the NE can tell the difference.) I'm not overly fond of it, but it isn't the worst in the world.
How do people feel about their accents / the way their voice sounds?
I sound different to different people. Some think I'm english, some think I'm american, some think I'm canadian. Nobody thinks I'm Irish when they hear me.
I still have trouble with th. I often substitute "d" for the voiced dental fricative (like in "the") or a sound which is somewhere between "d" and the real sound. It's something I'll have to work on someday.
Mexicans from Mexico City don't have accents when we speak Spanish. We just talk. We don't sing or put emphasis on letters. This is something that we use to make fun of people from the North (almost always from Monterrey, who sound like the Mexican equivalent of a Texan, and also from most Spanish speaking countries, like Argentina, Costa Rica, Cuba or Spain.
Now, speaking English I always do my best to speak it properly, but I always lower my guard and sound very Chicano, esse

it is kinda ok I guess
My wife keeps finding herself accidentally mimicking the way the locals (we're in Vancouver) speak though!
I sometimes slip into one if I'm around lots of my family, though.
