I used to hate DS because I thought it was one of those shitty mid 90's TSR retarded metaplot settings, and that everyone liked because it was all dark and edgy and basically a planet-sized Tomb of Horrors. Also: Mul breeding.
Then someone told me that nobody actually paid attention to the metaplot and the whole point of the setting was to give you the shittiest world imaginable for your PC's to be heroic(-ish) in.
All I know of Dark Sun I learned from playing Dark Sun: The Shattered Lands way back when. Really awesome game, I loved the atmosphere of that world. If I had enough geek friends to play D&D, I'd definitely go with Dark Sun.
the dark sun pc games were so much dang fun, especially shattered lands. never tried the mmo one, but it sounded cool. the setting was damn awesome, and had a bit more character options than other rpg games out at the time. never actually played the tabletop rpg because i don't have any friends waa-waa
Planescape took some of the concepts (i.e. the ability to travel from world to world), and made it good.
The new Plane Above sourcebook for 4e has a lot of very Spelljammer-ish elements to it. Astral galleons, pirates, etc.
Looking forward to Black Sun this summer. The next season of D&D Encounters is actually a Dark Sun adventure. It starts in... 4 weeks I think. 3 more weeks of the current season and then the new Dark Sun adventure starts on the 4th Wednesday (June 9). Should be a good way for people to get a taste of the setting before the books come out.
I've been enjoying the Encounters format and plan to continue playing but it's kind of making me crave something with a little more meat to it. I'm not too big on in-character dialogue and such but the Encounters games are pretty much just straight-up combat encounters. I don't think we've even mentioned our characters' names. Everyone's just "the Rogue", "the Battlemind", etc.
Damn it Joe, you should teach me and Tank to play this because then we could play when you're in Boston.
Oh I don't really know how to play, but I remember there were novels set in the various D&D universes that I was interested in. This was during my middle school days, when I read about 40 DragonLance books.
