So, I just purchased a PS3 to alleviate my boredom and I'm pretty fucking excited; and then I realized I have no idea what this thing can do. Um, play games? But, what else?
A friend of mine acquainted me with TVersity and I spent last night streaming avi's to the PS3. I also learned that it doesn't like .mkv files.
This morning, I learned how to access Pandora via PS3, but I'm still awaiting my Netflix disc, so I can access that vast wealth of media through the PS3.
It almost certainly cannot play PS2 games! Not so exciting!
(I am, of course, assuming you bought a slim or a newer large model.)
And, of course, it can play PS1 games! Which isn't all that noteworthy any more, I guess, given how many things can play PS1 games....
I'd recommend checking out PS3 Media Server as an alternative to TVersity. Its interface leaves a lot to be desired, but it handles MKVs very well (once you set up all the decoding and font options, anyway). TVersity honestly works a lot better on the Xbox 360, for some reason or another. PS3 Media Server is very good on the PS3 though (it works on both, like TVersity).
Uh, also, you can browse the internet? Sort of? I really hate the PS3 browser (nothing I really want to use it for works properly), but it's better than nothing, right?
It goes without saying TVersity works so long as your Xbox 360 is connected (regardless of your live status).
I was a late adopter to the PS3 (shortly after my third PS2 died), so BC was pretty much a requirement. I thought I might drop XBL Gold, until I realized, for some reason, PSN hates me and goes out of its way to make everything painfully slow, and no one else I knew wanted to own a PS3 or, if they did, wanted to play it online. So, yeah, I don't really use PSN anymore. Hopefully, your experience is better!
WMC also works with the PS3 (if you have a recent Windows machine, anyway). It's good to have options, though PS3 media server, once you get it working, will likely cover all your media streaming needs (it doesn't like organizing music though).
you can get custom themes which is cool
it works pretty well with a psp
you used to be able to run full linux on it but that has been removed in a recent update so dont bother trying http://www.macworld.com/article/53516/2006/10/24things.html
a quick google brought up that link,
PS.
you know about trophies right?
for .mkv files, i use mkv2vob. it's a little ps3-specific program that remuxes mkv files to ps3-readable vobs in a matter of seconds.
it's worth looking into, because tversity is miles better than ps3 media server if you have any intention of streaming music as well
you should really explore some of the sweet psn games. pixeljunk series, flower, critter crunch, everyday shooter, wipeoutHD etc. are some of the best games of the generation, they're cheap and you can get them without leaving your couch

PS3 Media Server is fine for everything but MKV's. If you can get MKV's working through that utility BSJEZZ posted, go with that. Only thing I hate about PS3 Media Server is that is doesn't update media automatically like TVersity does (and TVersity does this wonderfully on the XBOX360).
Too bad my PS3 took a dump; be sure to be careful with it in regards to ventilation and the like.

Does it vent out heat in the back? I might decide to just purchase one of those fans.

This is what I do too (although I stream through windows media player out of pure laziness). It works really well and works really fast.
you get trophies for completeing certain achevments ingame eg. long range headshots, over 100 kills etc.
depending on difficulty you can get a bronze, silver or gold trophy, the number of trophies you have is then displayed for all to see
they also vary from game to game

Ah, so, it's like the 360 awards (or whatever). Anyway, I just bought Dragon Age and Modern Warfare 2 today.
I had surgery a week ago, so I can't do too much. Time to get my game on.

Thanks for the Media Server recommendation.
I had a 360 Elite and never really got into the online stuff. Didn't want to pay for it. So, this is nice.

No. What's up with trophies?
