This is Blizzard we're talking about here. They don't take risks, they refine.

    Exactly,

    SC
    WC3
    WoW

and possibly Diablo games (were I more familiar with 2 and what they're doing with 3)

are all bigger risk takers than SC2. (not to mention the efforts that started Warcraft Adventures and SC Ghost)

Your observations about Blizzard suck. And even if they were on the mark, that doesn't take away criticism they should be more risky, at least with this game.

On that same token though we see how Blizzard takes elements from their games and will improve upon them. For instance, when WC3 first came out the most revolutionary aspect of the game was the Hero Unit; however, we all started linking similarities between SC and WC3 due to SC being the last RTS that Blizz developed (Creep is to Zerg as Blight is to Undead).

While I agree there is no brand new revolutionary idea in SC2 we see a quality product that they have been refining and giving the "Blizzard" touch which makes it incredibly replayable and immensely entertaining.

Also if we were to give it a small stretch we could see the League system as a great refinement of the WC3 Leveling system that gives way to entertaining and appropriately challenging games.

    So hey!

Is there anything I can do when I'm scouting on a big map and I happen to visit the enemy base last? I was just Toss and I got owned by a 6-pool ling rush because by the time my probe made it all the way around to his base he was already at my doorstep. Can I afford to make the assumption that he's rushing without hurting my economy? Or is it just a matter of dumb luck?

On the plus side, I managed to beat 2 consecutive terran opponents, first one by hiding a pylon in his base, and second one by Warp Prism chargelot summon ambush while his army was like 2/3 of the way to my base. By the time his MMM ball got back, I'd killed off most of his SCVs. Oh, and since he was running away I burned down 2 of his expansions with my main force.

    Chargelots are awesome.

I feel like I'm pretty OK with playing Blizzard's derivative projects. If Diablo 3 was just Diablo 2 with better graphics...I'd still buy that shit in a heartbeat. Starcraft? Well, I didn't really play SC1 a whole lot, but Starcraft 2 has really blown me away. As much as I hate them for everything about WoW, it doesn't change the fact that it was damn fun while I fed that addiction :). I can't really complain when they get it right and they decide that it's better not to ruin a good thing. People say it's not creative enough or whatever...but I'll take my good games where I can get em.

Grats on wins, but those terran players weren't very smart if, by that point in the game, they hadn't discovered your pylon simply by builing supply depots on the perimeter of their base.

As far as the discovery goes, I think it comes down to dumb luck to an extent. If I do go out and scout, I do so with the pylon after the pylon is set, which is really early (like @ 9 supply I think).

Whenever I'm on a map like LT or Kulas Ravine and I'm going up against a Zerg opponent, I always position my first pylon and first gateway to make a small choke where my first Zealot can block the doorway. I don't know what the opponent is really doing until I scout it out, but I will ALWAYS do this until I get my intel. Also I don't feel this hurts the economy because it's a basic start-up for Toss. Also, for a 6-pool rush, don't be afraid to pull of 4-5 workers to clog stuff up and help with teh assault as your second zealot is on the way.

    It's just safer :)

Well the first player I was constantly harassing at his front gate so he wasn't so much expecting the pylon. Second player spotted it, which is why I had to do the Warp Prism.

If you summon in a Warp Gate unit and the pylon power disappears before the unit is finished, I know the unit disappears, but what happens to the money spent making him? Is it wasted?

Holy Shit! It's the return of the Penny-Arcade 1v1 tournament!

After a two week hiatus the 1v1 tournament is back for just two more weeks! With the beta coming to a close we need to get as much play in as possible so what better time to start the tournament a new?

A couple things will be different this time, first: the tournament will be taking place on Saturday May 22nd at 4pm EST

The tournament will be limited to 16 people and each round will be a BO3, because of this there will be no losers bracket (I feel the BO3 eliminates the need, plus it cuts down on what will probably be a lengthy tournament.

If you want to register simply send me a PM with your Bnet ID and Race. Seeding will be done randomly so there is no need for your league.

I hesitate to do this last bit a little but I figure it can't hurt. If you would like to make a donation for all the hard work that I and all the kind people that help me run these tournaments (Sceptre, McSnuggles, Ryan, etc) you can give a donation to my paypal account [email protected] (any money given will most likely go to me buying food :P)

Right. Personally I am still not a huge fan of Diablo 2 - I feel a lot of what they added killed some of what made the original great (the large, boring overworlds for example killed a lot of the mood of the original's pure dungeon crawling IMO). Oddly Torchlight (which was done by mainly the same people) did a great job of bringing that back while also incorporating some of the good stuff Diablo 2 did. Makes me wonder what happened with Diablo 2 (maybe too many risks? :D)

Honestly, I don't understand the complaint here though. For one thing, you're basing this "no risk" opinion on ONE HALF of the game. As far as I've seen, Single Player does a ton of unique crap that changes up what they've done in the past (most significantly the "walk around your ship" side stuff in between missions). It just happens that they didn't want to mess with the gameplay for multiplayer much this time around since they didn't want to ruin what made the original great. Doesn't mean they did not take risks in that area either though - what about Battle.net 2.0? That's a big step up from past games.

I played a game vs. the CPU this weekend (or tried to, it locked up - probably due to my virus scanner running) to get a handle on the zerg. I laughed when the CPU sent two roaches after me and then ran away because I had a spine crawler at my entrance ramp :D

That's hardly new. It may be more involved now (which translates to tedium if they don't include a 'skip animation' button), but it's functionally similar to Days of Yore: the Wing Commander games, Delta V, Strike Force Centauri.

It's a nice touch, and I am in no way knocking it. Unless they force you to watch a 12-15 second animation of Raynor sighing, then walking to the next screen.

Multiplayer is pretty fun. At least try it with the computer. You can also familarize yourself with the game by watching Day9 commentary. You won't understand it at first but until you begin to get it his commentary is humorous enough to keep you engaged.

God damn that makes me angry.

Thanks anyways. I'll give MP a shot I suppose...
The multiplayer is very fun. You should have a good time!

My main worry is that I will be crushed by no-life nerds who play it all day. I'm not a hardcore player and I want to go against people who are equally horrible.

Is there a reliable tier system that places you with other new players?

Is that the one from April? I was at that :P Single Player is going to be pretty awesome based on what I saw (play on Hard difficulty though, Normal is kind of a joke)

There is a ladder and it's not too bad at matchmaking once you've played your placement matches and you're put in a league. Sometimes it's a little wonky but it's not too bad!

    he gon' get raped.

But seriously don't get discouraged if your first games are terrible. It takes a little while to get the hang of.

Your first 5 matches after your practice matches will be placement matches, these are to determine what league you belong in. So you will likely get crushed in all 5 then placed in copper with people of similar skill.
