This reminds me of the total conversion for the origional Doom that I loved so very, very much. My brother couldn't get past the first level, he had to walk away. Man I want to play that again.

How the hell would an RPG work? It just seem slike an odd genre choice for the series.
Xenomorph A attacks you with claws for 12 damage
Corporal Hicks attacks Xenomorph A with shotgun for 26 damage
Xenomorph A dies
Acid blood burns Corporal Hicks for 13 damage
Assume for a mere moment JJ that such an RPG is not turn based. It could be action-RPG like Oblivion or something. Don't ask me to Elaborate. You are a winner, you can figure it out.

Maybe like Deus Ex?
Where you are just some Joe in a colony that is being overrun? With several different factions at work inside the group of survivors (in this case it would still be hundreds). Maybe some people are trying to find a way to escape, one other faction that just wants to hold off tell help comes, a Weyland-Yutani faction that wants to capture specimens, or another cult like faction that thinks being a host is the closest thing to God?
We must start brainstorming!

I'm not familiar with Alien backstory but it could be something like that.
Alien 4 had mercenaries and shit all killing each other for whatever reason. I was assuming since an FPS was being made that this would be 3rd person.
ya the Marine campaign for AvP1 scared the shit out of me.
I actually never got past the first zone playing the Marine Campaign for AVP2 just because memories of playing the demo for AVP1. That damn thing scared me so much that I never left the starting room in it. I sat there huddled in my brightly lit office rocking back and forth staring at my computer screen because everytime I tried to make it out the door, I'd start having flashbacks to Aliens, only all I had was this puny little rifle. Then I'd remember that was all Ripley had. Then I'd realize I'm a giant wuss compared to her.
I have heard that the director's cut is far better than the theatrical version. I'll pick it up if I see it.
DANGER WILL ROBINSON.
This is incorrect, the director made shit up about deleted scenes to try and move more copies of the movie, but there's no real difference between the screen version and the "director's cut".
Ack, Obsidian getting to do the RPG saddens me. They ran the KOTOR franchise into the ground, then proceeded to backstab the NWN one, and now they are being let loose on the Alien universe.
I too am puzzled by Obsidian's dedication to producing consistently mediocre sequels to fantastic games.

I made a game! Hotline Maui. Requires mouse and keyboard.
I hope Obsidian releases a NWN2-like Toolset for their Aliens RPG. That'd be sweet. I don't like fantasy settings so a Toolset for Aliens would be great..

Uh....no, there is a difference. The movie is an hour longer I do believe, and a lot of plot holes are fixed(The alien coming from a cow like thing as opposed to a dog, for god's sake the thing was AS BIG AS THE DOG!) and things later in the movie, like certain characters 'vanishing' and you just assuming
"Oh hey, they probably are all burned now."
I the 'fancy cut' of Alien 3.
Other then that..games awesome, and other woot shit that people have spent 3 pages doing.

I'm in agreement with the others regarding not having interest another AvP shoot em' up.
Years ago there was "Aliens: A Comic Book Adventure", and it was basically a point and click adventure game. I think the RPG version of the Aliens series should take notice of this older game. Give the player a different perspective facing the Alien, as opposed to the Space Marine with state of the bad-ass art, weaponry.
I wish there was a version of this that was made to be more creepy in a horror genre way, rather than run around and kill anything that moves as fast as possible.
Well, two of the Alien flicks were "action" and two of them were "horror", so it's not like making an action game is an inappropriate use of the franchise.
But yeah, you're right. It would be nice.
HR Giger Aliens lend themselves to pant-shitting moments no matter the genre of game, though. All that's needed to make this game scary is for the designers to give you five bullets, then drop you into a room with six facehuggers.
Oh, you bastard.
:^:
Was waiting for someone to pick up on that.
You're given 4 bullets too many.
Also, I own the tech manual and it does have some awesome info.
Nah. You need to be given just enough bullets to think you've got a chance.

If you know you have five rounds left, and you know there are six facehuggers, all you need is one round.
I'm excited to see where Obsidian takes the RPG, but... Gearbox? Brothers in Arms might have been a good game from a technical standpoint, but I found the gameplay to be just tedious.
The point is that you don't know how many facehuggers are left, nor is there anymore ammunition left. For horror action, there should be at least one more enemy than you have ammo to kill them.

I've always been curious how well a blunt object would work on a facehugger. The Alien series has never really devolved to that level of violence (instead going the creative route with the makeshift flamethrowers and such), but I think it'd be cool to experiment with.

...you do realize that you're only supposed to use the one bullet in this scenario.
[spoiler:11c630d845]it's on yourself, dummy[/spoiler:11c630d845]
Horror in an FPS can work really well if you're incapable of defending yourself. The goal quickly becomes one of survival and escape rather than shooting anything that moves. The instinctual imperatives of fight or flight.
...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.
Just throwing in that I despised Alien 3's "theatrical cut", but hold the "director's cut" or whatever it is in the same regard as the first two. I feel that that movie gets way too much undeserved hate, Fincher did a great job with what he had to work with. Yes, the theatrical edition sucked, even Fincher disowned it. But, damn, after viewing the workprint of part 3 without bias, I felt pleased with that movie.
And man, I love Alien vs. Predator. Paul Anderson ruined my childhood.
Wasn't that the result of the sanity system, though, rather than a player induced action? There isn't a suicide button, as far as I recall.
Most of the games I've played that try to scare, while still giving you a means to defend yourself, tend not to scare because your weapons are too effective. This is regardless of the sound or the storytelling involved.
The games devolved into shootem ups -- with the guns themselves acting as meaningful barriers between the player and the scary stuff.

I think this varies from person to person, because like some others in this thread I was goddamn terrified in the colonial marine campaign, despite having all the weapons you need to defend yourself.
On the flip side, I've played games where they take away the ability to defend yourself, and those usually ended up being more frustrating than thrilling. It's all about atmosphere for me.

I totally agree with eating a bullet over becoming a host, but honestly... if I'm going down, I wanna take a couple of them with me.
That said, my memories of Aliens leads me to believe that 1 bullet per facehugger is being extremely generous. Adrenaline and overkill, yes, but the marines used significantly more than 1 bullet per hugger to make sure they went down and stayed down.
That said, the idea of an Aliens (movie #2, I the actiony goodness) RPS makes my pants tight.

First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!
Didn't the alien 3 director cut have a few scenes of the alien that were VERY unfinished? I remember seeing one version where there were 2-3 showings of the alien and it barely looked ray traced. Not textured at all, just shaded. Those scenes were VERY jarring for me and the whole action chase at the end to pin it in the molten metal pit thing took FOREVER in the version I am remembering. The memory is fuzzy though.
AVP 1 was awesome. The marine part was terrifying, the alien part was truly unique, and I don't think I hardly played the predator part at all. I could only stomach making it past the second level or so as the marine, played a LOT of the alien levels, but didn't like that some of the missions had a hidden timer in them if I am recalling correctly.
I remember liking the predator part in AVP 2, but hating the jumping puzzle parts and also I didn't like playing the alien anymore nor the marine.
Definately looking forward to some new alien games, but I really want to play the alien, not the marine so I will probably be dissapointed unless they have single player games for both sides.
There is a new AVP movie in the works, isn't there? Does anyone still have the gaming rights to that franchise? A well done third installment of that game series would be very welcome.

Probably eBay, or maybe amazon.com
I'd suggest 1 over 2, 2 was fun, but 1 had the skirmish mode where you could fight an endless wave of Aliens. Spent A LOT of time playing that mode.
And AVP2 is apparently being taken to an R rating, which gives it at least a minor edge over the trashy one that Paul Anderson forcefully pushed out of his diseased ass. I guess we'll see if it..isn't as shitty
