BioWare games prove that they seem to really enjoy recycling the same plot structures and NPC archetypes, so hey
Maybe Zelda and Ganondorf are a perfect fit for them
I mean, it doesn't actually change the thrust of the original point, but it's a bit more accurate/inclusive.
Man, I could jab the hornet's nest soooo hard right about now...
What nest?* BioWare has zero original thought!
*
First, I know what nest.
Second, it's mostly a joke. BioWare is a bit same-y with their concepts and designs, sure. But there are enough differences that each can be considered newish. (But the similarities between the base concept of KOTOR and Mass Effect are strikingly similar.
So...mostly a joke.
Honestly, I do agree. I find myself wishing they'd mixed things up a bit more.
That being said, a lot of companies do it. I never understood why they got a much harder time than other people for it.
And Sonic Chronicles is still in my Gamefly queue so my soul crushing is still impending. I've got the 2008 Prince of Persia now. Neat art style, but I swear they say "fer-tile" so much I'm shocked there's not a "take pregnancy test" button.
Why is video game journalism a joke? The most decent thing is Bonus Round and even that's full of idiots.
I'm kind of surprised people let this stand. Is it possible this thread bashes Pachter because they think he's relevant? I thought it was just for the lolz.
There really isn't so much game journalism, Algertman. Journalism is about gathering and presenting facts. What we have is enthusiast press which is mostly about passing on press releases, opinion, and speculation (or tabloid blogs, which add unsubstantiated rumor to the mix). We complain about them when their opinions don't match ours or their speculation seems outlandish, but if they didn't have opinions and speculation to disagree with, most people would find them too boring to read.

Sadly enough the ramblings he pulls out of his ass help people decide which stocks to buy. So yeah, he's relevant.
That being said, a lot of companies do it. I never understood why they got a much harder time than other people for it.
Because ME and KOTOR were so similar. And because of Star Wars. If BioWare hadn't done KOTOR, or KOTOR hadn't been a Star Wars thing, I doubt anybody would've cared what ME did. ME shares more with 'standard' RPG formulas than it shares anything with Star Wars.
And it didn't help that the thing BioWare did after KOTOR turned into Jade Empire...
Enslaved key to Namco’s Top 5 plan
by Christopher Dring
European boss hopes Ninja Theory’s newest adventure can help it become a powerful global publisher
Action epic Enslaved is crucial to the realisation of Namco Bandai’s Western dream, the firm has told MCV.
The company announced last year that it wants to become one of the top five games publisher worldwide.
But its Japanese-heavy line-up has become a barrier in trying to reach US and European audiences.
So following the firm’s acquisition of Atari’s European distribution business last year, Namco Bandai has set about aggressively expanding its portfolio to feature more Western-specific titles.
Namco Bandai Partners’ VP of sales, marketing and publishing Olivier Comte said: “We have set ourselves a challenge in widening the Namco Bandai portfolio.
“We want to be a Top Five publisher in the games industry worldwide.
“To be one of the key publishers in the future, we need to develop Western, non-Japanese games.”
One of the titles Namco Bandai has snapped up is Enslaved, an action adventure game developed by talented Cambridge studio, Ninja Theory.
“Enslaved is much more than a product, it is the symbol of the future of this company. The game looks incredible, the studio is well-known and everything is on track.
“It’s important for consumers to play Enslaved because it could be the benchmark of what we have to make as a company.
“In five years Enslaved should be the most important franchise for Namco Bandai. Enslaved 2 and 3 should be our equivalent of Gran Turismo 5 or Uncharted.
“We need to this type of game in each genre and a consistent profile.
“Our industry is built on sequels and Enslaved is a triple-A property.”
Enslaved is made by the same people who made Heavenly Sword. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I'm glad to see they are already planning sequels before the game has been released.
If I would get on BioWare's case for anything, it would be for using the same basic engine archtype in all of their games. Whenever two people converse, it's with them standing directly in front of each other, camera zooms in on one face, then another, then on you while you pick your dialog option. Quest structures are reused between games. It makes playing their games feel incredibly "same-y". Though I would say they've started breaking out of that mold with ME1 and 2.
What was wrong with that Sonic RPG they made? I always hear people dump on it. Did it just end up imploding on itself like most of Sonic's games are like to do these days?

Why when you say "Tabloid Blogs" I automatically think of Joystiq and Kotaku.
Funny thing really. :P
I don't find Joystiq that bad. Though maybe that's because I'm comparing it to Kotaku.
Anything would look good when compared to a website that has at least one panty-shot article every 3 days.
Joystiq used to be really bad but they are usually pretty good these days (as long as you stay out of the comments).
Kotaku though, dear god.. I can't even read that site anymore. It's not even the henti crap they post all the time, it's all the inane "some dude made mario using toast!! loloolololollol!" articles. I take exception to "video game art" that I could reproduce in like 2 minutes with absolutely no effort (outside of buying supplies), which is a large quantity of what they post. Then of course they did some crappy java updates to their comments so now every news story takes like 2 minutes to load.

Quick list of things wrong with it (take notes Cloud):
Boring story
Boring new characters
Irritating dialogue
Gameplay is Slow and broken
Horribly implemented touch screen battle system
Most of your attacks don't register unless you do them precicely
There's more but my nose started to bleed from the memories.
The company behind Kung Fu Chaos and a game remarkably similar to this one that was hyped up and failed to sell that well brings you a game that will obviously sell millions. Pfffffffffff.

Here's that guy we like...
"(Nintendo may) steal the show with its upcoming new handheld (scheduled for release by March 2011), the 3DS. The only price cut that we expect is for Nintendo’s DS in the U.S. (following recent price cuts in the UK and Japan). Nintendo is unlikely to drop the price of the Wii below $199 as it recently introduced a new bundle that includes Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, and the Wii Motion Plus. Similarly, Sony is unlikely to announce a PS3 price cut, as we believe a price reduction below $299 may lead to a loss on each unit sold. Microsoft is not expected to drop the price of the Xbox 360 below $299 either; instead, we expect the company to bundle the Natal motion controller with a redesigned (slim and black) console." - Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter
To be fair Heavenly Sword was a lot longer than 3 hours. Triple that even. While it was not without it share of problems it really wasn't that far away from being a really great game. Enslaved has a good chance of being what Namco wants it to be but wow they need to learn how to set expectations better. Anything less than the 2nd coming and this game is going to be considered a complete failure now. I'm still looking forward to it. I like Ninja Theory as a dev.

Sadly enough the ramblings he pulls out of his ass help people decide which stocks to buy. So yeah, he's relevant.
You're saying he moves stock prices, that he affects the decisions of publishers? I'm not saying that's not possible, just that I hadn't heard about it.
Joystiq hit a low with their "Zelda Wii sucks and here's the math to prove it" bullshit. They realized they didn't want to be Kotaku, and have been steadily on the up and up since then.

That's actually exactly what I was thinking of when I mentioned that they used to suck :P They had some real bad fanboy articles back then.
I know E3 is right around the corner and this will likely change, but is it just me or has Xbox Live Arcade been kind of lax on noticable games lately. I mean, there's Doom 2, but beyond that I don't think I've actually noticed an XBLA game since Shadow Complex.

I think that nintendo is going to lose a big chunk of the wii market that exists today to the PS3 and move as soon as sony make a package of PS3 + move competitively priced to the wii. If sony ever gets the price of PS3 + move down to $249, I think the wii has a world of hurt, because sony can say 'look wii owners, if you want to upgrade to full HD, have a bluray player, get all sorts of cool content, and every game made by every publisher is going to be on this thing, you need to upgrade to a PS3 + move. I've always thought sony was going to do this, and I've always thought nintendo would counter by saying 'no, you don't need to change to PS3, we'll give you the same thing with Wii HD, and by the way, it's fully backward compatible with every game we've ever made'. That's pretty compelling, and all the publishers would just say, hey, since we're making games for PS3 and 360, we can just include the wii HD, since it's pretty much just a port. We're making games for natal and move anyway, why not make them for wii HD?

Yeah, it's been in the shitter lately
But it's getting some really neat stuff soon in the summer
- Monkey Island 2
- Shank
- DeathSpank
- Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
- Limbo
- Rush'n Attack: Ex-Patriot
I wouldn't be surprised to hear about Shadow Complex 2 soon as well
Those two don't actually contradict each other. One is saying that a sub-$299 price now would be bad. The other is an eventual $250 price for console and wands would be devastating to the Wii.
Unless I missed the part where he specifically said the PS3 should get a price cut naow!!!!

Yea, Pachter didn't actually contradict himself there.
I actually agree with his thoughts on price drops and such. Also, if done properly, yea, the 3DS will be a show stealer. Not sure what Sony can do with the PSP2 to match the upcoming Nintendo handheld.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear about Shadow Complex 2 soon as well
If (i.e. when) they do that, I really hope the plot is not so god-awful this time. I know that's a lot to ask for, but really, that was a great game with an absolutely terrible plot. I think they could probably work with whatever they are left with from the first one and make something ok out of it, but it'd have to be a new writer for sure.

I question whether a PSP2 will even be there to be honest. It seems like in the past, Sony especially has been pretty terrible at keeping this kind of thing secret. So I can't imagine we wouldn't have seen something by now if they intended to show it off in like a week.

Show the same gimmick. What a fantastic innovation!
Woo. Lets start saying next-gen again. We kinda stopped for a while.
The PSP2 is pretty much a non-starter unless Sony can somehow surprise us with something awesome and new. Then again they'll be more boned if they don't even show a half-assed PSP2 at E3.
And if you get right down to it, Shadow Complex barely had more plot than the non-RPG Mario games. "Some terrorists want to kidnap the United States. Are you a bad enough dude to etc." There were a few decent lines sprinkled about though, thanks to Larry David. But I'll agree, the connections with whoever that big-name writer is who is a political neanderthal didn't really do the game any favors.
