While earplugs as a defensive measure are the main concern, I also posit that you should consider it for its offensive merits as well; any time a monster is wasting several seconds roaring, is time for you to be attacking. Being earplugged means you can take advantage of that window.
Mind you, blocking can work as well, but not all weapons block. Also, you still lose out on a few moments of animation to block a roar before being able to move about.
It may not be the first thing you think of for the skill, but it certainly is a nice perk to consider.
And evade in general is nice, but I agree that there are some things that you can't (or at least, won't always be able to. Circumstances never give perfect situations for this sort of thing) evade out of. Now evade inc with evade +2 is another story, but even then it still falls into the same category.
I love countering roars with my lance, especially when it's a rage roar from my poking it.
Sometimes it's just more fun to kit out in something other than rathian+ gear, too; I may try making the damascus set next for the +dragon res, punishing draw, and guard boost, then throw crit draw and a random 5-slot skill on top of that. Would be a pretty nice alternate set, and being able to just block agnak beams would go a long way towards mitigating the bullshit factor.

Earplugs for me is almost entirely an offensive concern.
Being able to let out the big attacks while they're sitting there roaring is great. Be it spirit combo, golf swings, elemental discharge, charged smash...

I'm back from vacation, so I shall hopefully be on tonight. I'm up for Jhen or any of the other events that are going on
Oh, before I left, I realized that I have everything for Rathian + except for the helm (stupid ruby!), so I finally have a good HR set. Yay. I'm not feeling so frail any more.
So today I chopped down some cedar trees, helped my mom take care of the new kitten, and repelled my first Kushala Daora. I feel like today has been a productive day.
my WR2 kit is 10 potions, 10 herbs+10 blue mushrooms (to be made into 10 more potions), seeds to cure blights if needed, antidotes against ian/los/giggi, and might/adamant seeds for a tough fight
quick note about buffing
buff horns = buff seeds. buff horn/seed stack with food buffs. i forget bowgun, but bowgun also adds wind/current (maybe tremor?) resist as well.

None. Break his lantern in a capture quest with the baggi set capture bonus and great jaggi mask. I get one almost every time. Easiest to do when he's underwater.

you can do it if you gt +40/50 hp food buff and max potions if you die to regain that 50hp.
note you made it way farther than me in that armor set. i lasted 40seconds. no lie. first rocks hit me and i abandoned.
In other new I fought my first Barioth today. He's a bit annoying isn't he? Not exactly hard (though I did use a fair amount of potions) but he can be difficult to pin down.

It's probably been mentioned here earlier but the trick to Barioth is to break his claws asap. Once that's done he loses traction and won't be able to attack as quickly.

Go ahead and use pitfall traps and bombs, they'll make it much faster.
How exactly do bombs distribute damage, anyway? Do they hit every part within the blast for full damage, distribute the damage across all parts, or just deal full damage to the closest part?

I managed to mine up the lance ancientshard and find the Lagia Sapphire to upgrade it to the Skyscraper sooner than I got a single lantern+ out of the 2 needed for upgrading the rustshard lance (Undertaker). Now that bastard has been made obsolete and will be sold rather than upgraded. Take that you precious Undertaker! Serves you right for needing fictional goods.
