I didn't actually do it "first", either. I played offline until I had a full set of Bone armor and a decent weapon with Green sharpness before going online, and then finished offline when I was around HR 25 or so. For that matter waiting even longer until you're high rank will make it even easier.

The important bit is that you finish offline mode at some point or another, because Ceadeus parts are needed for almost every Water weapon, and some of the best armor available in the game.

As far as "rude" people in rooms, it always helps to chat it up with people, especially in Minegarde 1/City Gate 9. Mention that you're from Penny Arcade, and that you need help. Don't expect other people to do all of your quests for you... just have some specific goals in mind, and ask if they can help you accomplish them ("I need some of the key quests done for my rank" or "I need a Rathian Plate"). Use the limited, but functional, chat options. If you don't have a USB Keyboard, get one, or unplug it from one of your desktops. There's no telling what intentions and motives people have over the internet, so always talk and ask.

Offline mode took me about 7 hours to beat in High Rank gear. I started in Online mode after farming up zenny for chainmail and a hammer, then worked my way up to 4 star High Rank, farmed out a good armor and weapon, then rushed through offline. Offline is useful, but not necessary for online play.

I have just ordered the Logitech wireless keyboard to allow me to communicate better since no one seems to have Wii speak. I have tried to respond via the useless virtual keyboard but people usually move onto another topic before I finish typing my sentence.

The best way of getting key quests done is to find rooms with people at the same level as you, don’t try to join a room with people higher than you expecting them to do the quest for you this is the equivalent of a cheat mode and you will not benefit from learning the move sets or patterns of the monster. If all you want to do is to reach the higher levels without putting the time in to learn the game then you will be found out pretty quickly because high level gear is no guarantee of not being kitty carted.

On a lighter note, does anyone have an estimate on the playing time required to get to HR999?

my personal opinion is that you should try and join rooms that are in the same rank as you

    0-8
    9-17
    18-30 etc

if you are one or two levels shy its probably no biggy to go with higher people since it usually means an easier time of leveling up quicker. but be gracious about it, don't expect people to help you level up if they have plans. and be cool about them wanting to do higher rank stuff wthout you.

maybe since i really only play in 1-9 but i have never really run into any rude people. some annoying, but not rude.

I alternated between on and offline; did offline long enough to get some useable armour and the first LS. Hopped online up till HR9. Went back offline to get better armour and weapons and now I'm back online again.

On a related note I now have full Barioth armour, it's awesome. It's a shame I had to kill 5 damn Barioth just to get a single Claw though...

I feel kind of stuck on what goal to give myself now. I'm going to have to start farming something for better armor and weapons just not sure what would be best. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Armor I've gone: Leather > Bone > Peco > ???
(Lagi has 9 slots plus I lucked out and got 2 plates on my first kill)
(Ian has easy HG ear plugs and fire resist)

I primarily use GS and Valkyrie Blade/Wyvern Jawblade are the next things to get.
I have one LS and that's fun, but seems like most of them are going to be a while to get.

Offline just opened up the 5* Quests

i use baggi now but need a good charm, i miss sharpener and perception

Speaking of charms, what is the best place to grind for decent charms? for a while i would get two or 3 mystery charms on the tundra, but the one egg quest i did gave me a higher ranked one

We'll do some charm farming tonight if you want.

Now that you have 3 star online available your best bet is powderstone runs. Its like running the eggs, but in the volcano with rocks that hurt you while you carry them. If you don't already have it put together a loc lac set first. Wearing the 3 items of that set gets you Heat Cancel (lo), pro transporter and recovery spd +1. You can wear any gloves you want and your baggi helm with it for good luck. Then a charm or gems to get Heat Cancel (Hi) and you will only take damage from carrying the stone. Pro transporter lets you run much faster while carrying stones/eggs which is key when you are slowly dieing while running the stones. The online version (Powder Burns) only requires 3 stones be delivered so it goes really quick. If you mine areas 5,8,9,10 on your way to the stones (area 10) you also have chances at rust shards, all 3 versions of armor spheres and more charms. Quest rewards usually have a several charms and another shot at rust shards.

Bear in mind that unless this was on the recruiting server, I don't think you can even set HR limits.

What it comes down to is that if a person(s) in a town are HR 31 or higher, they probably don't want to run low rank quests because they don't really get anything from it. If I for whatever reason run a low rank quest, there is an excellent chance that I won't bother even taking a single item from the reward screen because there are almost no materials available in low rank quests that have any meaning to me, it'll just be "sell all" for an amount of money that is likely insignificant to me by now.

In short, while he probably could have said something, joining a town with HR31+ people and posting a low rank quest is usually considered somewhat rude.

yeah, i know, im completely aware of this. the reason i joined was because there were a bunch of higher twenties like me. the quest he happened to be running was in my league. i just thought he was kind of a jerk the way he acted. some guy wants to do barioth, without be asked he says "I GUESS i'll help. Barioth was really difficult for me at first because he acts like Nargacuga, but he's like a Nargacuga on Ambien.

Going from Narga to Barioth, he has all these weird delays and his attacks come so much more slowly that I'd find myself dodging a second or two early and rolling straight into his claw or tail.

I guess should just be happy he doesn't have any bullshit overhead tail slap that will instantly murder you even if you already cut off his tail.
That said, he's probably one of the easier wyverns in my mind because his small hitboxes mean you can dodge through pretty much any attack he throws at you even without the aid of Evasion+1, then again Blue and I spent the better part of a day marathon farming him so by the time we were done making all of his weapons and armor we were pretty well practiced with him.

You unlock Harvest Tour quests for the Sandy Plains and Flooded Forest at 4 stars. You get the entire open area to just run around harvesting things/kill bitches, and when you're done (5 minutes will have to have passed first) you take the Paw Pass ticket out of the supply box and turn it in to the red box. Still has a timer though.

I haven't been able to make most of the altreon weapons because broken skypiercers are the one thing I can't seem to get (and thus can't even make the basic weapons to do the upgrades on).

My track record on Unite is about as equally bad though; I'm approaching 40 g-rank nargas killed with no heavenly scale carve/reward, and those take a minimum of a half-hour solo for me to kill.

He'll drop a shiny that has a small chance of being a heavenly scale. If it's not, abandon the quest and do it again.

So I've been thinking up new ways for Mon Hun to evolve over the basic 'hunt monster, get monster mats, build monster weapons, repeat' routine. Seems there's a lot of games now using the 4 player co-op against one big beast theme (God Eater comes to mind) and while MH is sitting comfortably at the top still, at some point I reckon it'll have to evolve to stay ahead, at least with MH4, I'd say.

The idea that intrigued me most is I'd like to see is a Pokemon style capture and use system, where you can cap monsters and them try to tame them and subsequently use them as your 'pets', as an extension of the MH2 Dos PvP system. The caveats are that the pet attacks, while aimed at your new monster target, also hit you if you're in the way. To keep the pet from defecting (and suddenly turning into a 2 monster fight), you should keep it satiated with bits of meat to keep its health up, and obviously assist it when you can (I can see many players switching to gunner for support). Fighting the same type of monster may increase chances of defection ("Wait... I'm helping this puny human kill my own kind?!") for certain monsters. Hitting your pet repeatedly either on purpose or accident also increases those chances.

This idea came along because I've been fighting Joe alot and do enjoy the fact that he does not discriminate among hostile targets - he was tearing into Barioth whenever he decided to fly in foolishly :D

The best is when DJ starts eating a dead or captured monster. D:

I've thought about your first point, as well. Combining this game with some elements of Pokemon, could make an addicting game, indeed.

I would love to see some type of training aspect going into a monster that you have captured. Like, as you pit your monster against other monsters in the wild, each kill makes them stronger, in perhaps different ways depending on your monster's prey.

Then once you've sufficiently trained your monster, you can have it face off against other players' mons in some kind of arena, to see how it does in battle.

    Or against other players themselves.

It'd be interesting to see a player and monster versus player and monster fight, though I'm not sure how difficult it would be to balance player to player combat. As it currently is, it just wouldn't work.

Maybe make it so that players can infinitely respawn, and you only win when the enemy's monster is down. All defeating a player would do is take them out of the action for a bit.
