aye that was me. didn't really steal him, i was falling asleep anyways and that was my last quest for the night.
but yes. i was mightily offended and demand retribution
Haha, well pop in to city 36 some time, Me and my friend have been working on getting his girlfriend caught up so we have been doing a lot of low rank stuff. You can join in the fun!
I fought my first Diablos just now. Went in with ten mega potions, ten potions, the ingredients to make ten more potions, and at least 7 things of honey.
55 minutes later I emerge victorious, with only 2 mega potions left. Everything else gone.
That could have gone a lot better, but getting that killing blow was so fucking rewarding like god damn.
that and breaking parts; rath's tail, quru's face(looks kinda funny), or in the case of last night, ura's chin btw, im slightly pissed that now im in high rank since i'll need high rank armour. will my current maxed out los blade or ura gunner work?

Uragaan I am really bad at fighting this guy, I have no idea what moves he's going to do, or how to dodge them. It's very embarrasing...
In other news I got up to HR23-ish with some decent swords, great fun.
Uragaan's pretty much about situational awareness and conserving enough time to get out of the way. In general though, being around the base of the tail should keep you away from most of the lunges and chin pounds.
Unfortunately, the only way to really learn the timings and how aggressive you can be is to get thrashed until you can get a feel for it, but that's monster hunter for you
Props to maddoc for the narga recommendation as well; got a heavenly after an hour or so, and it's pretty quick to force the shiny drops with all the bombs. 3 more to go!
yea i got stomped the first time i fought uragaan. it didn't help that not knowing the timing of his attacks/movements i would constantly get caught in animations that left me helpless. got to stick and move.
conversely, first time i fought rathalos i did pretty well i think but he is similar to rathian.
gigginox is a pain though. its hard to get in close enough to hit him without getting run over.

Tip to learn Uragaan the easy way: Do the phantom Uragaan event quest. I did that before ever fighting the real Uragaan..... and learned all his moves in a safe environment so I whomped him when I fought the real one.

Makes sense, I did kill him eventually but it was him who was dominating the fight; I got his tail off but he killed me twice. I kept swinging wildly, bouncing off his chin and setting myself up for a chin pound. Of course it doesn't help that I'm using Barioth armour with hugely low Fire Res...
Ah well, I don't need to fight him on my own again and beating him unlocked Ceadeus, and Agnaktor. What's Agnaktor's difficulty like? Tougher than Urugaan?
I don't find mind's eye useful against him, since you still do greatly reduced damage and take the high sharpness hit on glancing blows. If you are trying to break his chin you might as well hammer it, otherwise his belly or the underside of his tail are better targets.
The easiest thing to do against non-mini uragaan might just be water bowguns, though.

I'm quite a fan of hammering his face over and over. Sometimes I get out of the groove though, and get totally destroyed. Or, other players get too close to his face (or I get closer than I should (which is usually the case (but not always (...but usually is)))) while I'm superpounding, and I send them into a lovely Ura lava steam bath. Just ask Iceburner
Any ways, getting into a hammering groove isn't that hard, and you're given a hard and fast lesson in his tells.
yeah, having a hammer makes breaking his chin so much easier but now that im in full rank, will the ura gunner armor and los blade be any use? or should i be making chain, hunter or jaggi +?

Alloy+ is easy enough to make. From there you could probably jump right into Rathian hunts. Rathian+ armor will go a long long way.
alright, but then what was the point of me making uragaan if im not going to use it until i upgrade?
They look cool?
Basically, the defense values for low rank armor end (preupgrade) where HR armor like chainmail+ and better begin.
okay, i think i get it now, sucks, but i get it XD, im just glad that once i do reach uragaan high rank, i wont need any jaws to make my current armour +

I don't think the RNG wants me to finish my set of Rathian armor. I need 2 whole wyvern claws to make the very last piece.
After 6+ kills/captures I have not gotten a single one. However, there was one time where I got 25 wyvern fangs, as well as five charms and an armor sphere, all in one quest. I'd rather have gotten a claw.
I'm beginning to think that breaking Rathian's wings doesn't give a 22% chance of a claw drop, but rather erases the claw drop percentage from the drop table.

You can trade for wyvern claws from the argosy captain so long as you don't have him bypass the wyverian hub.

Okay, gonna do that. Thanks for telling me before I went insane.
...Are lances cheap? I ask because I heard how someone switched away from Lances because he felt they were too cheap, and I love lances but I don't want to feel like I'm being cheap.

They're a defensive style of play. You can, with the right skills, guard any attack.
But it's not as easy as it sounds and to be good at it you need practice. It takes some skill to get the counter charge attack right and to deal with the slowness in weilding the weapon. All things have their cost.
Also know that the charge attack is awesome but in multiplayer is better used as a mobility tool and should be canceled out of or you'll knock people around.
I take it as a challenge to play with them and learn to get a balance between the defense and offense.

so i think i need to build up something with a guard ability. i had originally tried the great sword but it felt clunky to me. i only tried lances a little but the defensive style didn't sit well with me. I like sword and shield but the low damage ability worries me against tough foes (urragaan etc)
maybe i will try GS again since i am more experienced and kind of no what i am doing now
So it also seems like i could use better armor.
i have high upgraded low-rank baggi armor but i still got 3-4 shotted a couple times last night by diablos and barioth. was thinking of trying to put together a rathalos/rathian set though i am not set on that. barioth armor does looks pretty cool as goes giggi, but looking cool only gets you so far
well that will be hard since i can't fight agnaktor yet.
thinking i might build up a barioth armor for my hammers and then use that to build up a urragen/diablos mix
also last night i was jumping around the valor servers to find some quests and man i was surprised how many people had no active skills at all.

Y'know I'm thinking now that the 3DS is going to be much more suited for MH games than PSP.
With 2 screens you no longer need the UI or menus on top of the action. Just you, the land, and the monsters.
Wth a touch screen, the menus and item management are a breeze and also no longer need to interfere with control over your character. Just think of the 10-item hot-bar available in MH Frontier. Poke an item to use it, with an arrow or two to cycle through your stuff a group at a time. This would also free the L button to exclusively re-center viewpoint and quick-aim (like it used to be in MH1/2, and trust me it works better).
The gyroscope and accelerometer or even the video camera could even be used for gestural in-game camera control, in addition to the D-pad. The Claw? What's that?
Well, we'll see what happens. Here's hoping, though.

Well if reports are to be believed, Capcom's already got a version of MT Framework going on 3DS and Monster Hunter is perhaps their only major franchise not to have a port to that engine yet -- eventually it will need one, and it will cost the least to start with a portable version ...
mts, how close are you to HR31 now? I made it all the way to high rank wearing baggi /w jaggi mask, rathian /w jaggi mask, or helios depending on the fight (all fully upgraded for low rank). Stryker and I were able to duo HR Rathian wearing regular rathian and then upgrading its defense between fights with the +parts we got from the previous fights.
If you have completed the single player farm ceadeus to put together the helios armor for when you need a high defense above everything else. Rathian for when you really need a high fire res and baggi for all else (it was my capture farming set).
Stryker hasn't finished single yet so he didn't have helios so I'm not sure what he used for a high def set, but he didn't seem to struggle too much in most fights (at least online :P ).
As for your questions about guard... I really don't know. I didn't like SnS at all, barely used a water GS on the Raths before getting a water hammer and finally going back to my Dragon SA for them. I've only used lance a little here and there, mostly for lagi cause its a much easier fight when you play defensively and let him charge you then poke away.
Stryker however has been using a GS lately when he isn't using a longsword so he might have some tips there.
Also, I should be on a little tonight to help get you closer to 31.
i probably still need to get more experience with some of the 3* (online) monsters so i can avoid some of the attacks that got me. but it would be nice to have a high defense set.
i haven't beaten single player yet. i switched to mostly online at the 4* level. though i need to harvest some resources etc. i am running low on a lot of things.
