They should want to appear to have respect for the classic game design that they are very obviously aping.
.
It's called a roast dude
Also just because it's classic game design doesn't mean it's good
Uncharted 2 should have a bunch of stupid collectables that you need to get to proceed through the level! That's respect for classic game design er wait people actually like games Rare makes people would probably want that
Can the audience of people who believe Mario Kart is fun but too kiddie actually be that big?
Sorry, but that seems like a case of putting gamer scum in charge of the marketing. The goal is to get people to buy, not to generate traffic on a blog.
LOL. Blast Processing, and one of the games on a side view of the TV is showing Streets of Rage. Cause there sure was a lot of speedy hyper action in that game! Oh, and Mario Kart sure didn't go on to sell millions of games worldwide, making it one of the most popular racing games (and franchises) ever.
I really, really hated those Sega commercials. They were full of attitude and dickery that even as a kid, didn't succeed to draw me in. Then again, I was Squaresoft's and Enix's bitch, and they were pretty exclusive to (S)NES. As much fun as Phantasy Star and Shining Force were, they were no Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior.
Fuck this commercial for making fun of Wacky Wheels.

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

This commercial is just plain untrue. Everybody knows that Mario Kart creates hatred between previously good friends rather than fostering it exactly like Monopoly does. Fucking blue shells.
We all laugh now about the "Genesis Does What Nintendon't" marketing, but back then that shit worked.
The coolest kid at my school was the guy who had a GameGear and Mortal Kombat. He played games with blood, in color, on a huge screen. The murky green and gray of the GameBoy just couldn't compete.
Of course, with the battery pack and giant magnification screen he had mounted on the back and front of the Game Gear (respectively), the thing weighed like ten pounds, but he was still the King of Cool.
I remember the poor kid who wanted to talk about PilotWings, but we were all too busy talking about F-16: Strike Eagle II to care. Fuck Hang gliding, we were shooting down Migs and blowing chaff to dodge incoming SAM fire.
What I'd really like is for Naughty Dog to step up and make a better kart racing game. Crash Team Racing was better than MK64. Then they made Jak X on PS2, which was...not that good, while Universal continued their butchering of the Crash franchise.
However, there were three Crashes and Jaks before each got their racing game, so I'm expecting Uncharted Racing in 2012 featuring super-realistic graphics.

Wacky racing with super-realistic graphics would be freaking awesome. They should just make a spiritual sequel to Carmeggedon.
There's a PSP Crash Team Racing game, but I don't know if it's any good.
It's nice to see someone else who appreciates the original, though. That game plus a multi-tap plus a crapload of soda and microwavable burritos was pretty much every sleepover I ever had during middle school.
Why are people so up in arms about this game? I wouldn't even say they are knocking Mario Kart.
Marketing is all about ideas and attitudes. Getting ideas out there. Selling an attitude. In this case, the idea they are trying to convey is "hey, here's a kart racing game with real cars."
They aren't dogging on the pedigree. If anything, Blur is an homage to the great kart racing games that have come before it. The fact that the game feels like a kart racer, despite it looking like the Fast and the Furious is a very obvious indicator that they hold a lot of respect for those that came before.
The game does not play like Twisted Metal. It plays like a kart racer.
For some reason, the "kiddy" game in that advertisement looks more fun.
Are, are you serious? It was a parody of several games designed to look as saccarine and unappealing as possible.
Well, maybe not "fun", but more intriguing at least. The 5 seconds they showed of Blur made it look like a generic, unremarkable street-racing game, with a power-up, or a Mario Kart clone without the charm. The kiddy game had nice, clean graphics and style, and a compelling lead character. I think they could've done a better job at showcasing what makes Blur awesome.
Fuck this commercial for making fun of Wacky Wheels.
Fuck that game. When I hit an animal with a powerup, I want them to fall behind and stay behind. Not blatantly zoom back up to it's place in line.
I'm very exited for Blur. After much hassle, Mario Kart is the one and only online Wii game that works. Blur is going to give racing games a shot in the arm.

Graphics aside, how does Blur compare to ModNation Racers speaking strictly from a racing perspective? I never got around to downloading the Blur beta, but I really liked the ModNation Racers demo

Blur just doesn't seem that interesting to me, Split/Second seems much more crazy and fun.
The Split Second demo was a big dissapointment for me ... I loved the idea, the graphics are also great, but the car in the demo felt really clunky and slow ...
The Blur demo was fairly fun - and I can sort of the see the comparison they are trying to make, but just slapping powerups on a vehicle racer doesn't really make them direct competition with each other... I mean, I don't know anyone who said "Wipeout is Mario Kart in space" just because they both had powerups.

Wait is that a Pac-Man reference
They should want to appear to have respect for the classic game design that they are very obviously aping.
Obviously marketing =/= developer, but I don't really think it's funny, or shows the game in a good light.
Like, bright and colourful would probably be a better selling point for me than "It is dark and has real cars in it".

It also appeared to be a play on the 'there are no losers' nonsense that kids are fed, which something that should be mocked openly.

This commercial was the first thing I thought of when I saw the Blur one.
I'd imagine this appeals to 13 year olds, just like the old Sega ones did to me when I was 13.

Mario Kart is a fun game, I'm not gonna deny that, but I much prefer the idea of it being done in a more realistic setting

Haha true.
Yea, I found the commercial quite funny, especially 'Toad' punching the other guy in the gut.
In truth though, Kart racers wouldn't exist if not for the wonderul Wacky Races cartoons.
Muttley rules. 8-)
