SHIT YEAH

So Phantasy Star Portable is awesome, it had a cool story that tied in with Phantasy Star Universe, highly addictive gameplay, a bunch of different races and classes, a highly customizable character creation system, tons of weapons/armor/clothes/etc for your character, tons of missions, excellent graphics, and a control scheme that wasn't hampered by the PSP's lack of buttons compared to home consoles.

So, what could be better than that?

How about a sequel with "double the amount of content from previous games", 100 missions, 170 monsters (including new bosses), over 2,000 weapons and items, added battle modes from PSO, plus the added ability to block and roll.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot - Infrastructure Multiplayer.

Up until now that game existed, but was only available in Japan, meaning you could import but unless you spoke their moon-language you likely would have no idea what was going on. But wait:

PSP2 Announced for Western Release in Q4 2010

Some screens (from the press release) showing some new environments:

46252120386ce707825b.jpg

4625212096a77d0bb209.jpg

If you haven't played the original Phantasy Star Portable yet, there is a demo available on the PSN (although sadly the game itself is UMD-Only), so if you're interested in ARPGs/Dungeon Crawlers you should check it out. There is also a non-PSN Japanese-language demo of the sequel around on the net, if you already own PSP but want to check out blocking and rolling.

Also, general-purpose Phantasy Star thread for the cool kids who were drawing maps of dungeons and getting their asses kicked by mosquitoes ten feet out from the starting town instead of riding giant chickens or fixing lame crystals or whatever you Final Fantasy guys were doing.

I knew they'd release this here. I told you Glenn565! I told you about those stars! Gonna buy the hell out of this, it'll be like the PSO PS0 should have been, instead of the "good but it's just missing that 'something'" that it was.

This. I was so happy when PS0 came out but I was left thinking "that's it?"

I had no problem with the presentation, nor the levels but when there were so few items to find and they were all pretty easy to get. . . I just wasn't feeling like it mattered to play anymore.

But PSP2. Yeah I'm buying a psp system just to play this and Monster Hunter. (ARPG's are sort of my weakness)

Yeah, I really should have known that they'd release it here. But I'm ever the hopeless cynic.

Anyway, this really does fix what was wrong with PS0. There seriously is so much to do in this game. And if you only played PSU online, they pretty much fixed everything wrong with it.

It's pretty insane the amount of time we'll be able to spend here. I am very excited. I never played PSU so I guess I need to look up what classes and stuff will look like here.

Kase we're gonna have to get our multiplayer on.

You'll be able to carry your character from PSP into PSP2, but as far as I know it's only appearance, not stats or items. The wiki says something about since PSP2 takes place three years after PSP characters in story mode will occasionally comment about how you used to be a Guardian though.

There will be multiplayer. Lots and Lots of it. I got to a point in PSO where I didn't even go into the single player, I'd just launch offline multi and play that solo if no one was around.

Now all I need to do is talk a buddy of mine into spending the cash for a psp so he can join us in this endevor. We used to spend days sitting around drinking and making runs for rare equipment.

Finally, I can retire my imported copy of this. It'll be nice to know what the story's about, and hopefully get a less terrible partner voice screaming at me.

Well, I don't have my old PSP that I played it on for data transfer, no worries though. We'll definitely have to do some MP. I'll even stream it!

If my playing with the JP version is right, your appearance doesn't really carry over either, since they completely changed how the character parts are. Unlike the PSP1 and PSU, each race has their own set of facial features, and an exclusive set of clothes and hair.

When I picked up my psp today I was considering making psp1 my next game, but I think I'll just wait till psp2 comes out since it's so close anyway.

This may be the only game that can tear me away from hunting monsters for any period of time.

Sounds good. I kind of feel bad playing ad-hoc with people using my current PSP character though. I went human female (it's the old "If I'm going to be staring at an ass for a hundred hours of gameplay, it might as well be a female ass"), but for kicks made her max height. So now if I wear boots and a hat I'm about three feet taller than all of the other players.

Oh well, I've been wanting to create a Cast anyway. I want a giant hulking stompy robot that runs around and guts things with a saber.

I don't get the second ad image. I understand Pizza Hut, but the second weapon just makes me think of the AIDS ribbon. Between this and Peace Walker, it seems in-game advertising using items is all the rage on the PSP right now.

Don't expect any of those advertisement items to make it in. If anything, only expect magazines. There's basically no chance that Pizza Hut, the idol posters, or the Hatsune Miku stuff will make it in.

I believe the second picture is to do with the Neon Genesis Evangelion stuff they put in the JP version; that looks like Asuka's plugsuit, and I remember reading that one of the weapons was a spear used by one of the EVAs or something.

So, I guess that gives me about 6 months to get off my butt and actually set up my PS3 for Adhoc Party, then... :)

Why bother with ad-hoc party, PSP2 has infrastructure.

Also, GameStop has 09/28/2010 listed as a release date, but I don't know if they were given that by Sega or if they just came up with it as a placeholder for pre-orders.

The Pizza Hut and Miku ones aren't completely impossible, since one's an American company, and the other Sega owns video game rights to. Sega would just have to talk to Pizza Hut, and whoever distributes the vocaloids in the US (if anyone)

Pizza Hut would probably cost too much considering that this probably won't sell too well, although I could be wrong, and Miku will be removed because Sega thinks we won't understand it. There was a Miku weapon in 0 that got removed, so it's highly unlikely it'll survive the trip this time either. Hell, they got rid of the Nintendo weapons in 0. There wasn't even a reason to do that!

I actually haven't liked many of the changes to PSPo2. A lot of them are nice, but some big ones don't work so well, such as making evasion and defense absolutely worthless and requiring you to block or dodge everything. This game just doesn't have the kind of precision or fairness needed to pretend that it's Monster Hunter.

On top of this, every enemy's AI has been tweaked so they have pretty much the same behavior: they will rotate in place to "home" in on your position while in the middle of attacking, up until the moment where you need to dodge them. Every enemy does this, and it's really freaking infuriating. Not only is it the BS form of "difficulty", but it counts pretty heavily against a lot of the work taken to solve PSU's "everything feels really similar" problem.

It also doesn't hold a candle to PSO, where every monster was unique enough to present its own form of mini-challenge and could hurt you without needing auto-aim.

On top of this, the frame rate in multiplayer is pretty unbearable. It's beautiful and smooth in 1P mode (finally), but because the game has to load a network driver for multi-mode, they had to make the frame rate variable and it maxes out at 20, a full 10 fps less than 1P mode. It's an eyesore.

Well the PSU storyline is the main one now. That's pretty lame, because the PSU story is really bad and cliche.

Yeah, once I unlocked Fightmaster I pretty much carved through the story mode until the final boss. The first time at level 40 I got three shotted by one of the henchmen, so I did some free missions and came back around 60 with some S-Rank gear, spammed some photon arts, and utterly destroyed the entire endgame, hardly using any healing items.

Sadly, there's no news of this, but this is really what I'd like to see the most. PSZero had a beautiful design aesthetic and a the most solid gameplay system since PSO itself. I really was hoping there'd be a more fully-featured game based on it for Wii.

I'm kinda mixed on PSPo2, though the game does have the advantage of receiving patches. It takes a number of good steps forward from PSU and fixes PSPo1's performance issues, and then took an equal, if not greater number ot steps backward with several key gameplay elements which I feel fell apart. Add to that that multiplayer isn't nearly as easy on the eyes as single player and I had a hard time caring about the game once the novelty wore off.

My real problem with zero was that it gave you stuff far too easily. I had top level mag and a pretty high up partisian/lance and I only beat normal. If I have almost end tier stuff in normal I don't feel like there's even a point to going on.

    I lost interest.

In PSO you found maybe the crappiest of rares towards the end of normal. I didn't even have equipment I wasn't ashamed of until Hard Mines.
