A [Sailor Moon] Retrospective: Brace for more science.
Interesting. I thought it was an oddly hardcore change, so it makes more sense it was in the original version.
Queen Beryl sure was stone cold when it came to punishing her minions. Of course, had she the foresight to send them all out at once, the Scouts probably wouldn't have stood a chance.
Yeah, it's like that in the ADV subs too. He's not dead. Same thing happens to Mimete.
I have that old episode on VHS. Honestly, I think the only thing that saved the Scouts was simply the jockeying for who wanted to be the big bad's favorite pet. Of course, it didn't help Beryl that she never chose to properly support her minions... if Jadeite had gotten some proper support from back home when it was just Moon and Mercury, they might have actually had a chance- but I kind of figured he was boned as soon as Mars showed up. The big weakness of the early Scout team was its lack of offense- Ami was purely defense, and most of the time it was simply them tiring the monster out and waiting for Tuxedo Mask to show up and bail them out, then the bubbles, and then a lucky shot from Moon that won the day.

Actually I think they were all out at once setting up their own projects, but they didn't get the "funding" to go ahead and execute their plans until the boss' current favorite was "fired" (killed, encased in ice, etc.) That's how they were able to start up so quickly after they got the chance.
Why weren't they each properly appropriated with the one getting the best results getting the best funding? Because it kept them divided against each other to prevent a coup. Establishing a personality cult and evil magic brainwashing will only get you so far, and if the Shitennou were too successful it could adversely affect Beryl's job security [which in this case means her life].
Welcome to the world of office power-politics. Put on a tie and sign away you're soul (its not like you're going to need it anyway).
I've always wanted an all-out battle that pit all four of Beryl's generals against all five Scouts at once.
I'm pretty sure in that scenario the Scouts would be severely boned.
Jadite and Nephrite got pretty close solo. With jupiter and Venus I think theyd put up a good fight.
You're forgetting Kunzite/Malachite, who completely obliterated all five girls at multiple occasions until Sailor Moon unlocked her rainbow princess bullshit whatever and one-shot him.
Hence why I think a four-man raid on the Scouts would have scored one for the villains easily.
Can't really think of too many shows where the bad guys had the foresight to send their strongest all in at once. Closest I can think of is Giant Robo, though that was just three of the Magnificent Ten (though they explicitly mentioned that just one of those guys alone was bad enough. Three was pretty much a bloodbath).
I love sailor moon, this an dragon ball were my intro to anime. I would watch it in Spanish and then moved to the Japanese because my friend would lend me all her VHS she would get from ebay. I'm re-watching it now and I can even remember a lot of the episodes, so many great memories I pretending to be sailor Jupiter xD. Not to mention now they have SM crystal!
I remember wanting the US Irwin dolls but my mom was so cheap. Now I'm even able to get my own moon stick, and rub it in my moms face all the time. Anyways I love sailor moon and in happy it's back, I've been showing it to all the youngin and it makes me so happy they love it too c':
So, in ep. 5 we got Jupiter, and more of TM engaging in "questionable" activities. I thought Jupiter was introduced pretty well and Usgai for once didn't seem to get a ton of over-the-top girl-wood over a new team member (it seemed more like admiration than amorous). Makoto's character was pretty well demonstrated, and she seems like an outcast because of her strength and emotional difficulty of her romantic feelings toward her old senpai were not requited (I really didn't think girls could get "friend-zoned" before this). Also, I guess she's been playing too much pokemon because she somehow learned Razor Leaf.
In regards to TM: seriously what the hell...B&E (ep 1), Attempted Rape (ep 4), and now Kidnapping (ep 5). He's supposed to be a protagonist right? Yet he seems to be doing more horrible shit then the actual villains.

With the way things are going I expect episode 6 to just be 23min of him running around punching babies....only to learn at the end (or set up at the beginning) they were actually Dark Kingdom Yoma.
Nothing like giving fans everywhere the proverbial middle finger by making them buy incredibly expensive Blu Rays in order to get animation a step above mediocre.
So the thing that's happened for a ton of major anime releases lately (rush it out for air, clean it up for home release) is happening for this as well

Good thing I'm not buying. I think anime on demand kind of ended that trend for me, and the last show I was tempted to buy was Fate/Zero. (And I only have half of it because of how ridiculous the pricing is.)

So far my wife and I aren't really feeling the new series. We kinda hate the new animation(especially the flat expressions and bad cgi). The characters feel flat and lifeless(the filler in the original series actually went a long way towards making the characters actual CHARACTERS), and on the whole it just feels like a lazy effort to sell toys.
We're thinking that going forward we're going to alternate old series to new between weeks, to see if nostalgia really holds up.

Just as an aside... I've been following anime for *very* long time. (Shhh, don't tell anyone.)
After Geneon imploded, most of the anime industry in Japan is a shell of it's former self. It's pretty much bankrolled by non-Japanese sales (Mostly U.S.) and animated in Indonesia for the most part. Most of the art houses nowadays are specialty shops, with Ghibli being the last one really standing. Now that Miyazaki is retired, we'll see how that pans out. It was a good run for an industry, and this may be the old foggy of me kicking in, but nowadays what passes off as anime entertainment is junk. Here's hoping soon for a renaissance.
Now excuse me as I push my glasses up up the bridge of my nose with my middle finger, allowing light to glare off the lens, obscuring my eyes.
Latest ep was pretty good. So this is definitely not a 1:1 adaption anymore. I wonder why they didnt use some of the more iconic stuff from sm92 if they were going to go off script
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.

I enjoy that the Generals get to have more of a role, and their music is all kinds of badass, but they could have made that fight a lot more intense.

I agree with you on the whole animation thing. I know I probably am biased due to the fact that I really liked the animation from the original, but they look too noodle-ey and it just looks awkward sometimes, the new Sailor Mercury pose kills me inside. It's just weird. I also do wish the characters had more depth.
However what I like from the new series is that they actually have other powers beside the same stock repeated ones and at times they speed up the transformations a little so it doesn't take up half the show. Not only that but one thing I also thought was dumb about the original with the whole "I can't tell what your real identity is because you transformed, even though you pretty much look the same" from what I saw in episode 6 tuxedo mask was smart enough to put two and two together. Now if they could take all that awesome stuff and make "prettier" animation go with it then that would be pretty boss.

I also like that Usagi isn't beating around the bush in terms of the relationship. She's obviously interested in him, not acting like she hates him and all that nonsense.

A little support can go a long, long way.
I can has cheezburger, yes?

Usagi is an OL who doesn't yet know she's actually related to the CEO and is going to be fast tracked to management.
Mamoru is the President of a company the scout's company is forming a merger with.
The outer senshi are from a really popular subsidiary of the scout's corporation.
I'm pretty sure in that scenario the Scouts would be severely boned.

Damn that girl's strong

Even if the episodes aren't that great it's much better when you're clinking mimosas with your gals.

That way I not only get better animation but just a better show in general.
In my defense, they were totally asking for it.

Following the Sailor Business podcast seems like a good way to accomplish this: http://www.wax-work.com/sailor/

So, nah. I think the industry is just fine.

Plus, some of them are pretty good.
In the manga she apparently just uses Moon healing Escalation. Beryl and Zoiscite arent there
Also Tuxedo Mask totes has powers.Granted they arent offensive but still
