For me, this became a lot easier once I realized you could swipe at it from horseback. Find a cougar, put a bullet in its hindleg, then get out your knife and ride alongside it while mashing the trigger. If you're lucky, it'll try to flee and you can basically just run it down. If you're unlucky, it'll create some distance to turn and then horseback ceases to be an option.

    Here's an odd thought.

I've managed to shoot wolves in the leg, to the point where they can't run and try to limp away from you.

Not so much luck with cougars. Even with Dead Eye aiming, I haven't been able to cripple a cougar. Are they really so far gone as Nature's Terminators that they can't be crippled?

This sounds like a trap but the worst case scenario I imagine is hilarious.

I'm on the "knife 2 cougars" challenge and I'm charging fearlessly towards the SOBs but they always seem to stay out of knife swing distance, and then rape my face seconds later. All thought of dodging is, for some reason, reserved for after I'm dead.

Shoot one in the back leg or torso a time or two. It'll try to run away most likely. Hop on your horse and chase it down and lasso it.

Hop off your horse, try to stay to the side or behind it and get close and knife it before it mauls you.

To those I spammed invites to, quit playing single player dammit! Also thanks for the Fort Mercer farming run guys, going from 17 to 25 is pretty sweet. To those feeling dissappointed by Free Roam, it's 10x better with a posse to hang around and do stuff.

While we were doing fort mercer, some people choice to either kill a ton of bandits or kill the local human players that were trying to kill us. It was a pretty good deal since you can get a little bit of both and still get the match exp at the end.

    I love this thread.

    I do not love cougars.

I just got out of an awesome Freeroam session, wherein our posse was rapidly expanding until we hit the 8 player cap. We spent a while rolling over some wagons, shooting up the hideouts, etc. Eventually, we got bored, so we took to the woods...let me tell you, cougars DO NOT appreciate intruders. All of a sudden I saw someone on my right go sailing off of their horse, only to see them get mauled by -two cougars-. All that ensued was a cacophony of screams and wild gunfire; my horse was actually shot to death, causing me to fall and be eaten by a cougar. One guy turned tail and bolted. We all shared a good laugh; the poor bastard actually thought he could outrun them.

    He didn't.

When you whistle, you'll get the horse you have the deed for if your horse dies. So if you have a Black Stallion (or whatever the breed is called) deed, whistle and one of those comes.

the secret of horse deeds is that they summon an infinite type of the horse in question... so if you have a deed for a fast horse, and your fast horse dies, you don't have to scour the plains looking for another. You just use your deed and voila, you have another fast horse.

From what I understand, you can always whistle and get the last type of horse you hitched. If you have a deed you can manually switch to a different breed without having to find it and hitch it.

No, if your horse dies and you whistle without a deed, you'll get a random horse. I lost my Kentucky Saddler and whistled without a deed, and got some horrible slow horse with barely any stamina.

My wife hadn't encountered any cougars when I took over for a few minutes so she could grab some food. I'm in the cholla springs area, hunting some deer for her to sell. A blue dot appears, and I hear a lady screaming. "Oh, great, an endangered villager. Y,awn." But I knew the old lady would be mad at me if I let her die, so I ride out toward her.

Silly woman is being chased by three cougars. I panic, naturally, and flip into deadeye, killing all three in a few well placed shots.

The wife comes out of the kitchen just as I hit the ground on my way to skin them.

And she still hasn't seen a cougar in-game as far as I know.

Got around to picking this up. Thank you Futureshop and your "Trade 2 games and get it free" deal.

Right off the bat, when I was just glancing at some of the posts, somebody mentioned how Super Mario 64 figured out how to do analog movement nearly 15 years ago? That statement is right on the money. This holding A to run is garbage. I'm also having trouble moving around with the horse, it doesn't feel as smooth and easy as it should be. I might just need more practice on that front, but I'm constantly getting tripped up on the speed/slowing aspect, and getting caught on hitches and corners.

Either way though, pretty bitching game so far.

Horse control takes a bit of getting used to. Just remember that moving the stick to the left or right while standing still has the same result as when moving - you turn that direction, not move. Think of it as if you're actually controlling a horse. You can't make a horse sidestep, nor can it turn on a dime.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but going from something like a Hungairan Half-Bred (white horses in Mexico) which run like they have a rocket up their ass and have nearly unlimited stamina to some random horse because it died and you didn't buy a deed is jarring.

Where the heck is the first treasure in Mexico? I forget which Treasure Hunter Rank # it is, but it's the one with

Oh man, I'm having fun just living a quiet life as a rancher with my wife and son. I would have never thought Rockstar would be capable of a game with this level of characters.

Something really bad is about to happen, I can tell, and I almost just want to completely stop doing missions right now because of it.

Also, did I just get lucky with the Gods of Dramatic Weather, or is it normal for
you to get a torrential downpour and thunderstorm that lasts from the fight with the army in the plains, the ride to the mountains to fight Dutch, and the ride back to your farm, letting you show up to an abandoned farm and asking for your family in a very dreary setting, surprising you all the more when his wife comes out

    Because that was awesome.

Ride along the shoreline. There is a section of the shore that is sort of a bump pointing towards Texas (is it Texas? I don't know American geography). Near there, you are riding with the water on your left, you should see an area with two short stone walls on your right and a tree behind them (with cow skulls on it) and on your left there is another short stone wall. The treasure is on the other side.

This also gives me an idea; going up north into the stronghold of the Bears might actually be the ideal area to try and complete the "most wanted" task. Whenever the knuckleheads come chasing up north to hunt you down for the bounty they have to run the cougar/bear gauntlet first.

So...on moneymaking....what do you guys think is the best source of consistent income? The gold bars from treasure hunting sell for quite a bit, but I personally am holding onto them as sort of a "back-up" plan. Probably sell 'em all when I max out the challenge. I don't think hunting can be quite as lucrative as anyone would like, seeing as it seems like you'll spend more on bullets than you'll make on skin and meat. So what do you think?

Is that the one that looks like a penis and balls on top of a rock formation with a little rock next to it? Just start at the Mexican town where you met the army guys (the one that's all white) and ride on the road towards the other end of the map. You can see for formation a bit inland as you are riding (if you chose the road that's not along the coastline, it should be inland to your left, I think).
