Moving Help

Im seriously considering moving back East to live with my dad. If he does let me, I have a few questions about moving and moving companies:

The only places that seem to be legit businesses were I live are called "Bekins Van Lines" and 'All My Sons". Has anyone ever heard of these companies, and if so, are they reliable?

How much would it probably cost to ship a dresser and a bookshelf? I know that I need to call the people up for a quote, but Id like to see a general census on what the typical cost would be so that I know I dont get ripped off. Also it would be from NM to VA.

Are there any precautions I should take while dealing with the moving companies? IE: Making sure nothing is broken or missing on arrival before signing papers.

I've heard of Bekins. They are a cross country mover, and when I got a quote from Illinois to Washington for a 3 bedroom house it was around $5000, I think. Graebel is another company that does cross country moves.

If you are only moving 2 pieces of furniture, it might be more cost effective to just buy new furniture when you arrive, and ship everything else.

Have you ruled out renting a UHaul and driving it yourself?

If you rent a trailer (sounds like you don't want to), avoid UHaul. Shitty service and shitty equipment. Ryder is pretty spectacular.
Unless the furniture is expensive or has meaning, look into selling it.
I've moved a few times and loved using a portable trailer system; PODS, Pack Rat, etc.

When I moved out of state the cheapest solution for me was to rent a moving van, have my brother drive with me and I followed behind in the car. My car wouldn't fit the dolly or trailer. Afterwards I sent my brother back in an airplane. Still far cheaper than enlisting in a moving company.

Like Moses555 said, if you only have 2 big things to move, chances are it's going to be much cheaper to just buy new stuff after you move.

Rent a Uhaul trailer for your personal effects. Leave the book case and dresser if you can't fit them in.

Is the furniture that nice that it's worth the gas + manpower it would cost to move it?
