"Error Loading Operating System"

Went to turn on the ol' laptop last night, and this message popped up:

"Error Loading Operating System"

I did some googling and came up with two options. One, Windows (7) might have been corrupted all to hell. To this end, I set the BIOS to boot from the CD drive and tossed in the recovery disk. It does some loading of files, then the screen blacks out. I kept it on for a while after this, but nothing progressed.

Two, the hard drive might be fired?

Thoughts?

I would just start by booting one of these and running some diagnostics.

Check to make sure that you don't have a USB flash drive/MP3 player plugged into the computer, it might be trying to boot off of that device. Take the OS boot disk out if that's the case, unplug the USB device and try to boot again.
