Out of curiosity, could someone explain why Makoto and Sakura are considered terrible?

Sakura I can kinda see, as she's kinda like a weak, fast version of Ryu (and thus not balanced and powerful, which is Ryu's strength). Makoto seems cool though, and like if played well, could be nasty.

    Thoughts?

She's slow. Not just walking slow, since that's usual, but her moves are slow to come out and slow to connect. She can't pressure anyone into making quick decisions where they have to guess right or lose big health, and if you can't do that in this game, you have to rely on the other player messing up and that's not a good game plan.

Makoto is awkward and slow. And so far noone has really been able to use her and be much of a threat to anyone else.

Sakura is OK, she's better in Super than she was in vanilla, but she still does relatively low damage and requires large combos to get her damage in. Also, once you figure out her reset options that part of her game isn't quite as scary, although a good Sakura will keep you guessing all day.

Hrm valid points about Makoto being slow and such, I can see that. Still - I've found this one dude on youtube who seemed pretty good at her:

Dunno if he's actually good or not, I'm not skilled enough yet to really know.

Makoto depends more on momentum than almost any other character I think. Once you get going she does Gief-like damage. But first you have to get in and land that first throw.

It doesn't help that she doesn't deal with focus or armor very well.

Yay I have learned me a new combo for Ibuki! It's real basic but it's one I've seen used alot. I saw EvilDrakeFang using it on a youtube vid and was like, ok that looks useful to me.

    sLP > sMP > Tsumuji

Probably not very hard but I'm all excited about it.

*edit - hey neat, looks like I can combo alot of stuff off sLP > sMP, like Kazagiri or whatever. sLK > sMK seems to work like that too. Cool stuff...

They aren't terrible, just not good. Decent.

Sakura has a hell of a time with certain matchups.
Sakura is OK, she's better in Super than she was in vanilla, but she still does relatively low damage and requires large combos to get her damage in. Also, once you figure out her reset options that part of her game isn't quite as scary, although a good Sakura will keep you guessing all day.

She's not really all that much better. j. MK is decent and ultra 2 is OK, but both aren't the game changer everyone seems to think it is.

I really don't find her damage low at all. She got decent to good damage BnBs.

So I got Guy up to C-Rank.

Some of the matches were very weird but some simple Run mixups, the Insta-Air Grab, and his chain seemed to destroy or at least put up a fight against everybody.

Oddly enough he seemed ridiculously effective against Akuma. Every Akuma I faced just seemed to get steamrolled, and some of them were up into the 4k BP range.

They are almost all terrible players who think that knowing how to do a shoto c.lp c.mk link combo makes you a tournament viable player. I would also like to point out to the xbox live community that just because I can win by walking backwards and kicking you right in the face every time you do a stupid, poorly spaced jump in does not in fact mean I don't know "how to do comboes".

I had my first ragequit last night, a month after launch.

I'm playing in ranked, working on getting better with Rufus. Opponent is Blanka.
Round 1: Random ball > punished. Random rainbow ball > Ultra 2 punish. Wakeup Ball Ultra > EX SS punished.
Round 2: Random ball > punished again. Random Ball Ultra AGAIN > EX SS punish. Etc.

    I walk up, throw.

"Player has left the game" In the middle of the throw animation.

    Lol.

Block balls standing, then just walk forward a touch and cr. hp. No dash needed, just standing block.

The best Makoto vids that I've seen on youtube come from NinjaCW or violent ryu.

She isn't a bad character per se, but she does have some limitations that other characters don't. For instance, she has zero wakeup options except block. She doesn't have a move that can get her past fireballs safely. Her anti air special is not as easy to use as dp's, or even flash kick for that matter. Her only move with armor is ex choke, and it's range is crap. Her only move with any invulnerability is ex chop, and the invincible frames don't even last until the move is active.

Now, she isn't completely crap by any means. Her normals are generally very good, especially s.mp. S.mp links into almost everything. It's also a great poke, and a great anti air. Her damage is good, but her stun is crazy good. Landing a s.fp ->hayate cancel -> s.mp -> ex chop is 500 stun for one bar. Granted it's a difficult combo, but 500 stun is more than half of most characters total stun. Her u1 is incredibly easy to land, just do it after choke. She does have some decent tick throw setups, and as Taramoor said her momentum game is good. Overall I think she's a good character, and if you have fun with her then don't let anyone tell you differently.

Anyone have some general advice on how to deal with extremely aggressive blockstring pressure with healthy doses of overheads and tick throws mixed in? I find myself just freezing up and staying on the defensive until I guess wrong enough times to lose the round.

I mainly play as El Fuerte and Cammy, and on the side am working on Adon and Gouken, but I guess I'm more looking for overall strategy advice not character-specific.

unfortunately, the answers tend to be char-specific. But in general, backdash if your char doesn't have a crappy backdash, and master option select teching.

If they're bad, mash SRK. If they're good... tech the throws and react to the overheads. Sorry, theres no real secret to it. Also, at some point, they'll be pushed out far enough so that have to restart their block string pressure, and those are the moments when you can either escape or begin some pressure of your own.
