What bothered me so much about the Daytime levels in the Wii version were just how freakin' empty they were. Very few enemies, very little set dressings, and lots of running forward. They just felt so sterile by comparison to the 360 game.
Since this is the current running Sonic thread, I wanted to let you know I just received an XBLA code for Sonic Adventures, just this second.
Going to fire it up now, hope I'll have more positive things to say over negative.
Got it earlier, and so far, no glaring flaws against what the original game was, i.e. they do not seem to have somehow made things worse.
Not that I think the original was bad, just with all the opinions floating around-- it seems the same as it ever was, quirky but fun.
I am a touch confused about what the DX DLC offers, however; I never had the Cube game, so I don't know what these "missions" are, or how a playable Metal Sonic works into things-- is it some multiplayer thing?

Im in the exact same boat as you and would love to know what this extra DX stuff does - I only have played the DC version, and have often heard that DX was broken - but Im wondering if it just is the usual Sonic scorn, and if it's the same as the low reviews for this XBLA release. It's exactly the same as I remember it. I had such a good time in '99 the faults didnt bother me, and that still holds wonderfully true. It is not perfect, but it is what it is and hasn't changed at all.
Also - I was REALLY suprised when I randomly got an Avatar Award yesterday. I assume I got it for playing for 5 hours, and it's a sweet Sonic Adventure T-Shirt. I checked the awards screen and holy shit...play for 10 hours and get SONIC'S SHOES.
Also - TSR - any rumblings on if Sega is planning to release Sonic Adventure 2 for XBLA as well? I can't IMAGINE they wouldn't, but playing SA again has me grabbing my SA2 copy for the DC off the shelf to play them back to back...and I'd love to be able to play them both off the XBox Hard drive...

The missions are basically cards that you find scattered around the various adventure fields. So, you go into mission mode, choose Sonic, run around SS/MR/EC until you find a card. The card unlocks a mission in a specific stage, or even in the adventure field themselves. You can then look for more mission cards, or do the mission, or whatever. It made for a pretty nice endgame to SA, because you still do basically everything else you do at the end of the game (i.e. replay stages, collect animals, raise Chao) but you also have the option of doing missions. Some easy, some hard.

I doubt SA2 will make it over. Thus far most of the Dreamcast games announced for XBLA/PSN are games that have already had PC ports, in other words, easy ports.
Hmm - just reading the DX version of Adventure has Game Gear ports in it...did this make it over to the XBLA release!?
[strike]I'd be willing to bet no. That would be far too ridiculous an inclusion for $5.[/strike] Beat'd.
Which is why I'm very happy I still have my Gamecube copy of SA DX. :winky:
I'm tempted to pick up all the Sonic games available on the Gamecube. I have Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast and for whatever reason I never did pick up SA2, mostly because I borrowed it from a relative for almost two years before he asked for it back. Though I do have a Japanese copy that's in with the 10th Birthday Pack.
And I need a new copy of Heroes because the one I got from Goozex a few months back is downright nasty.
maxzero, sonic mega collection has more content on the PS2 and xbox versions that the gamecube. They threw on a bunch of gamegear games, and while you can unlock them in Sonic Adventure DX, doing so is a massive pain in the rear.
I wonder if Sonic Colours can become its own series, like the Rush games on DS.
Ah, talk of Sonic Adventure DX reminds me that it was the only Sonic game I ever got a 100% completion in... and it nearly drained my sanity... Sonic's time attacks... FUCK. RED. MOUNTAIN.

Well, 360, but I already own most of the Mega Collection games for my Wii.

Unlocking the GG games in DX isn't so bad. They just unlock automatically as you collect emblems. So if you want to unlock everything in DX, you're going to get the GG games without even trying.
The GG games are also available in the Sonic Gems Collection, which is (in my opinion) one of the best Sonic games for Gamecube, because it has Sonic CD and CAN YOU FEEL THE SUNSHIIIIIINE.
I kind of wonder if the missions would be a good investment for me-- are they stuff like "complete Stage 2 in x minutes" or "with y rank"?
Because I'm not sure I'm that good at the game-- my average rank seems to be C, for whatever reason. I don't quite move through it like a 2D Sonic or Mario game, but I didn't think I was doing that bad.
Also, didn't Sonic Gems have some of the Game Gear games? Did it have any SADX didn't have, or vice versa?

The levels in Sonic Adventure aren't ranked. Every level has three missions (C,B and A; in that order), so the first time you beat any level you'll clear mission C. If you play again, you'll have a chance to beat mission B and so on. So don't worry, you're not doing bad.
Oh, and the mission mode has a variety of stuff (a lot of which I haven't seen, actually), but it tended to be more creative than just timed stuff. An example of an easy Tails mission is "cut all the grass in around your workshop." Some of the more challenging ones for Sonic placed a bunch of flags in the snowboarding area of Ice Cap Zone, or the bumper car area of Twinkle Park. In order to clear the mission, you need to zig zag back and forth and collect all of them. I remember a Knuckles mission with a very cryptic hint where you had to find something in the adventure field and hit it.
These missions aren't life-changing or anything, but I enjoyed them because they offered some new challenges to areas that had become almost second-nature to me. If you're not sure you want them, I'd recommend collecting all the emblems in the game and ask yourself if you'd like to keep playing. If so, you'll enjoy the mission pack.
Sonic Gems Collection's only GG games are:
Sonic 2
Sonic Triple Trouble
Sonic Drift 2
Sonic Spinball
Tails' Adventure
Tails' Sky Patrol
SADX has those and:
Sonic 1
Sonic Drift
Sonic Labyrinth (aka: cancer)
Sonic Chaos
Sonic Blast
When last I previewed this game, I said that this was the best 3D Sonic game since the Adventure series. Well now, I rescind that statement. This game will outdo the Adventure series. Just going by these three levels, I don’t see how it can’t. The game has superior level design, superior programming, far fewer bugs and glitches – I encountered none in the PAX demo – and the gimmicks are far, far superior. I haven’t even had a chance to check out the co-operative mode, which looks like it’s going to be an experience in and of itself. I can’t believe that this game is from the same team that brought us such disasters as Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic and the Black Knight. I can’t believe, for the first time ever, I can whole heartedly recommend a 3D Sonic game, without warning about its flaws and things you need to “get over” to enjoy it. I can’t believe I can say with confidence, that those people who post the Sonic Cycle for every damn announcement, should cram it and buy it on day one.

Wow, I've never heard of that before, and for good reason... it does look terrible.
Bless Sega and its developers for trying, but the Game Gear just wasn't that good. And the less said about the Nomad, the better. No matter how well intentioned they were after the Genesis' success, every new console or device they tried to make got screwed somehow sometime down the line, partially due to self-inflicted damage (read: higher-ups who didn't have very bright ideas).
But yeah, the Game Gear had horrible battery life (so much so that I never played it without using the mains adapter) and weighed half a ton. Nice graphics for a handheld of the time though.
The Nomad's screen also wasn't very sharp. And the thing was huge for a handheld system. But it played Genesis games! Plug it into the cigarette lighter in your car and you were set for a long car trip.
But yeah, the Game Gear had horrible battery life (so much so that I never played it without using the mains adapter) and weighed half a ton. Nice graphics for a handheld of the time though.
Thats because it pretty much was a Sega Master System turned portable. You could even run straight up SMS games on the Game Gear with an adapter.
Unlike the Lynx and Gameboy, the game gear was literally a portable home-console.
With a shake of the Wii Remote, Sonic transforms into a blue block, which acts as a switch to turn blue rings into solid platforms and vice versa. It’s a good way of finding some alternative routes through stages.
Man, I missed being underwater. I never thought I'd say that, but it's true. The underwater levels in Sonic were always really intense, sometimes frustrating, but very memorable. I'm glad to see them return.
I'm guessing (theorizing) that one of the remaining color power-ups allows Sonic to run underwater at normal speed, and perhaps breath? Or at least something water-related.
Looks like the drill powerup, when used underwater, allows sonic to control like a torpedo through the water.
Freaking sweet.
Also, I spy in that screenshot the classic bubble cluster (bottom left) with large bubbles floating up from it.
So the colours we have now are:
clear - speed boost
yellow - drill
green - laser
orange - rocket
pink - spiked/sticky ball
green - hover/ring dash
blue - block (only way to activate P-switches*)
So we've just got one left, which would be purple. I'd guess it's not to do with water, since blue seems to be introduced in the water levels.
*I'm sure they're not actually called P-switches, but they're a switch that turns coins into blocks and vice versa. HMM.
