Folks don't seem to complain about the switch from "Princess Toadstool" to "Peach" or "Aeris" to "Aerith", but for whatever reason the Eggman situation really seems to bug folks.
Because Eggman is a stupid name.

I hate all three and still call them what I want.
And yeah Robotnik is an awesome fake Russian name, it still is somewhat goofy but also appropriately evil-sounding.

Eggman is in no way intimidating or anything at all. Robotnik, on the otherhand, has a much better vibe to it, especially when compared to the names of the protagonists.

While we're on this tangent I really wish Capcom had stuck with "Rockman" for the US release.
I can't help but wonder if it means something different in Japanese, because with his series' robot naming conventions I would assume he'd have the attributes of a rock. "Mega" is pretty appropriate as an all around ass-kicking robot.

Well, you've got Rock Man, his "sister" robot, Roll.
Then you've got other characters: Blues, Bass, Treble, and Beat.

Sensing a bit of a theme here?
On the one hand, I've not really ever properly played a Mega Man game. On the other hand I've read plenty about the series here on the forums and the penny for this naming convention has never dropped until now. My mind is blown.
I thought Bass was just a terrible name that made me think of fish! Now it all makes sense.

"Protoman" is "Blues" over in Japan, if you were wondering who that was.
Robotnik is a much cooler name. However, the name difference never really bothered me for two reasons.
1) They made the name Robotnik canonical in SA2. Robotnik is Eggman's family name (hence, Gerald Robotnik is his grandfather), and Eggman is just a goofy pseudonym he adopted. Perhaps not what western fans would have wanted, but a nice gesture.
2) To me, this is Dr. Robotnik:
Note the pointed head, the robotic arm, stubby limbs and orange mustache. You may also be aware that he poses an actual threat to Sonic.
This is Dr. Eggman:
Note the round head, comparatively skinny limbs and brown mustache. Also, he's mostly comic relief and rarely treated as a serious threat.
They're basically two different characters. Their only similarities are color scheme and use of robots. If you gave Dr. Wily a red coat, he'd fit right in. As long as the two characters are portrayed consistently within their own series, I'm fine with either name.

If the Megaman series can get away with sheepman in Megaman 10, then the Sonic series can get away with Eggman.
The original character in Japanese "Egguman" (エッグマン) make sense to a japanese audience.
His original design and the one picked for Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis was egg shaped
I remember some dumb comic trying to explain how Robotnik was transformed into an egg shape by a machine, but the origins are so chronologically confusing and odd that Sonic appears as though he is from different dimensions or some shit. One story would have been fine.

That would be the UK Sonic The Comic, where he was originally a guy called Dr. Kintobor, and then had the wierd egg accident and became Dr. Robotnik.
And on the flipside, Sonic was originally a normal brown hedgehog, but as I recall an accident on a running machine (maybe even the same accident as Robotnik's) turned him blue and gave him super speed. IIRC he wears his red & white shoes to control his speed so he doesn't over-heat or whatever.

Man, it was so baffling to see what was originally a funny animal book mutate into such srs bsnss.

That's true, huh. I always forget about that since Bass & Treble are already music-related so I tend to assume that they just kept those names over from the Japanese release.
There was never a thread for the game, so I guess I'll post this here.
So, after Gamefly sent me seven games instead of my number one pick (despite it being available constantly), they finally sent me Sonic Chronicles. I know Brainiac warned me against it, but I plunged in anyway.
....sweet zombie Jesus, this game is bad. I mean, sound effects and music are horrible, the enemies have zero personality to their designs, and the dialog actively hurts my brain. How did Bioware manage to produce something THIS crap? Why did Sega release this instead of cancel it and pretend it never happened? Is there anything redeeming about this abomination?

No freaking way. There's a good chunk of Sonic X subtitled up on Hulu. With 4Kids at the helm I never thought I'd be able to see it in it's original form.
Is this thread veering into 'everything but the game actually being discussed' territory again? I'm not saying that's wrong (Sonic thread, par for the course :P), but lets keep that minimal.
A small aside about the trailer: I really like how well it's put together. The way it flows and builds (and the timing, in general) is much improved over previous trailers.

4Kids has actually been doing this initiative of releasing shows they've licensed in subtitled form online. They even started showing subtitled Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters on YouTube, but due to a Japanese voice actor squabbling over residuals, they had to cut it short.
What I was getting at, is I think 4Kids is probably the one behind the subtitled Hulu stuff.

No, they should be uncut episodes. They just opened up a new website for their streaming content, and a few other uncut anime shows (Hulu-powered, of course). A 4kids rep talked about their attempt to appeal to that older portion of the market in a podcast recently, it was kind of interesting. Here's the Sonic X section of that site (not that it's anything you couldn't have seen on Hulu).
