My question is "Is it possible to network two computers on wireless without a router?" At current I have a desktop and labtop both running wireless internet and I am trying to set up a file share between them without a router. But everyone I ask includeing the guy at Best Buy says its not possible. So I come in here on my knees looking for help, and any would be appreciated. Thanks
I'm sure there's some hack you can pull off to make it work, but none that's readily available out of the box. The nature of the wireless cards in your computers is to receive data, not to broadcast it like a router. Most laptops come with either an infrared port, bluetooth, or both for data transfer. Whether your pc is capable of using those protocols is a different story.
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
A simple crossover cable will connect the two machines and allow you to transfer data between them. It might take a bit of fumbling, but the machines should appear in each other's Network Places.
I used this method to transfer all of my music to my laptop when I went to college. You''d get a limited/no connectivity message, but I'm fairly sure that's just because you can't get online with the connection.
Also, you can use the wireless for data transfer, though you'd need to disconnect from your wireless network when doing it. You can set up an ad-hoc connection between those machines, and it should fuction just like the crossover cable I mentioned.
The guys are Besy Buy haven't the slightest about what they're telling you.
Anyone notice how some things (mattresses and the copy machines in Highrise) are totally impenetrable? A steel wall, yeah that makes sense, but bullets should obliterate copy machines.
I don't know about you, but I always buy a bullet proof printer. Its a lot more expensive, but I think the advantages are apparent.
