WCK, are you painting wet-in-wet, or allowing the layer to dry before moving on to the next layer? If you're rubbing off the previous layer of paint...you need to wait until the previous layers have dried before painting on top of them.

At the moment id say im working fairly wet. The underlayer dried well enough (though i may have rubbed it off), but its the layers after that which i find rub off.

On other paintings id use a drying medium to allow a layers to dry quickly, but after i noticed that it dulls the pigment, ive avoided using them this time around. Only prob it takes too long to dry.

I love oils, its a great medium. But its definately not practicle for working fast. Not that i need to work fast anyway.

Like Wakkawa, I'm more comfortable just painting rather than doing line art. Clean lines take too long for me.

    Also, still working on this!

Yeah his expression isn't quite what I want yet. I want that faraway, look of religious ecstasy - in the old sense of the word.

    It will take some fiddling!

Something I noticed is that people who are great with linework has serious problems with painting, while people fantastic with painting are not so great with linework!

    Screwy, ain't it?

Wasser - is the arm reaching out supposed to be foreshortened? It seems like the upper arm is really, really short.

Aside from that, I think it's fantastic. Lovin' that background, too.

Yeah man. Really cool paper boy. I agree with nightdragon, that arm doesnt feel like it's connecting right. Like his shoulder is too far out sideways.

Wakkawa, I think your arting is excellent, but something that's bothering me is the sameness of your ladies. Looking at some of your art on your site and thinking back, most of the girls you draw look really really bored, with their bellies thrust out, very soft and untoned and young, with kind of homogenous faces. I'd like to see you draw an older woman who has an intense expression on her face, who looks like she's been through some shit and looks like she could hurt someone bodily (or is actually hurting someone on the page). I know you get a lot of hassling on your art, so forgive me if I just haven't seen enough of it and I'm missing something.

hmm yeah I agree. Try and put some emotion and life into those supple forms. Try and tell a story or indicate a personality.

You have even thrown up a middle finger.

This is one of my favorite Samus images ever.

One thing I have always wondered: why the hell does she have long hair? I'd either tie that shit up, or cut it ridiculously short, a la Morena Baccarin. (I know she's always depicted with long hair, so it's just a general question, not a knock on wakkawa's stylistic choice)

being the uber-noob that I am I hope I'm putting this on the right thread. If I'm not...well....whoops...

a little someting I did at work while I was babysitting a branch store...
    skull.jpg

let me know if I need to work more on it....

go figure...I work in a costume shop and we happen to sell props too...so it's not a real human skull, just a miniature cast in resin

I've been trying my hand at different media. Here's a small thing (literally, it's like 8.5 x 11) in chalk pastel. Lesson learned: work bigger.

Are you going for realism? If so, here's a side-by-side with a reasonably realistic looking skull I grabbed from the internet:

I think the issues should be clear, but I can list them off if it'll help.

not really...to be honest.:? impressionism maybe?

the skull I was working off of wasn't nearly as detailed as that...in fact it was rather flat-featured and kind of uninteresting...

I should have grabbed one of the giant ones that look really creepy....I'll do one of those next time and light it like I oughta...

Maybe 'Red Hot Writer' is going for impressionism, but the execution wasn't successful.

Red Hot Writer - what particular style are you trying to achieve? Got the reference for upload?

You don't really do impressionism with a pencil. I'm actually not entirely sure how you'd accomplish that.

In case anyone is interested in seeing me fail and fail again on that latest painting I did, here's a 40+minute long time-lapse video in 5 parts. (painting took me 53 hours in real time... :-/ ) I'm not really asking for critique as I already finished the thing and I was both happy and unhappy with it and I would rather move on to the next project than look at this more now.

Disclaimer: It's not a tutorial. It just shows my process, from sketching all the way to the final touches. Just posting it here for completeness as I got tons of help here with it. The video is mainly for me to study and learn from my own mistakes plus I kinda like making the videos but it's not something I recommend anyone to watch if you want to learn drawing or painting or even if you enjoy this type of time-lapse videos as mine is way too long and boring to watch. If you do watch it, I recommend watching the first couple minutes of part one and maybe a minute from the end of part 4 and part 5 (only 3 minutes) for the final touches.
