Is the master hunter rank 4 something you can only get really late game?
I don't think so.
I believe you can find boars in Greenhollow before you even cross the river.
EDIT: Maybe Bonnie's is a speciial Saddler, then. Or maybe not even a Saddler at all, and people are just assuming.

I found loads of boar just north of the ranch, at a 3-way intersection of the railway lines. Didn't need bait they just turned up every minute or so.
Zero Punctuation has a review of RDR up. He complains a lot but it's pretty fair. Except whining about auto aim. I don't think you can criticise a game for a feature you don't like if you can turn that feature off in the menu.

I bought the Saddler deed after the Bonnie mission (which I think you can only do once you've broken the horse), tried to use it and it told me I already had one. It was the champagne one and I also got the 20 missions achieve on it. I think some of the confusion is the horses don't meet their descriptions that well, the Hungarian for instance is not very white, at least to my eyes. I was looking for a white horse and ignoring all the greyish ones:x

I tried playing with no map. It does improve the feel of the game but it makes things like bounty missions impossible, at least if you want to keep them alive, because you can't tell the bounty apart from his mates. And all the random "chase the thief" type encounters, it's almost impossible to find them if you don't have the map. Kind of a shame. I'd have liked it if you could have like a Fallout-3-style compass display in the bottom of the screen, smaller and less obtrusive than the map but showing what direction you're facing and with different icons for friend/foe/bounty etc.

For three days (like, since Sunday), I was walking around north of McFarlane's Ranch, waiting for Boars. Nothing but wolves and cougars. The first boar I saw was when I was riding west out of Thieves' Landing and it was off the path. It was frustrating as hell.
Then, yesterday, I was around that spot north of McFarlane's Ranch again and came upon the boar bonanza--there were at least 7 of them!
Funny thing was, after finishing that, I waited around and wandered a bit, but suddenly there were no more cougars to be found. Grr!
Anyone notice the graffiti scrawled on some walls in the game?
Some reference end game stuff:
The most memorable and worrisome was "My boy my boy oh dear god!" or something at Beecher Ranch or whatever. It is in the barn, not sure if it is still there after you beat the game.
I have found a couple of other. Mainly at lonely or abandoned buildings.

When I saw that one I thought it was some creepy foreshadowing thing, or some lame"hey this is purgatory" deal. After finishing the game, I have no idea what it was for. Maybe from a previous occupant?

Speaking of cheats, I just found one in the second story of a barn, and I think it ruined the end of the game for me.
OH MY SON, MY BLESSED SON
I put it in, and it says Jack Attack, so I activate it, and I'm playing as some other dude. Now, why would this character be in it? Seems obvious to me now that John dies, and you play as this Jack afterwards, who I'm sure is his son, based on the cheat code. Great, thanks Rockstar for ruining itttt
I'm not reading any spoiler responses to this though, just in case.

I know it does by default. That's how I set my waypoint to get out to them.
I'm pretty sure the red dots do appear on the map. Having the mini map off does make it a bit more involving, you aren't just guiding your dot across the map, you have to navigate the roads and land marks. On the other hand it is bloody hard to see dead animals/birds for skinning and you really need a good ear to pick up on the blue dot events.
I have just finished a poker game in armadillo when I was heading up stairs to bed when I hear a prostitute screaming in the street. I go back down and looking out the window I can see the assault taking place. I pull out my shotgun and kill the man attacking her. Only he happened to be a Walton's gang member. This makes all the other gang members pull out their guns and start firing... inside the saloon. The event turned into a massive gun battle between the gang, myself, passers by and the law.

And surround sound. It does you absolutely no good if the only thing you know for sure is that somewhere nearby, a woman is shrieking. You spend five minutes wandering around until you finally hear her gurgle her last breath.
Just experience my first crash. It's a first for my PS3, too. Considering I'd already beaten the game I thought I was in the clear for this sort of thing.

The marks always have very unique graphics though that are usually distinct from the generic gang members that are defending them; if it helps.
Sometimes it's tougher than others to pick out but I usually could just tell which to not kill by looking at them.
On the other hand I think you only actually need to bring in two alive ever for outfits. The rest you can just kill anyway because money is pretty easy to come by in the game anyway. About the time I got to mexico I stopped looting bodies entirely. Now by the end of the game I have every weapon, every single horse deed, max of every consumable (with double inventory), every property, etc and still have about 7k on me.
People seem to be having trouble with hunting specific things again, so:
As far as I can tell, bait only attracts carnivores (which makes sense since he's throwing blood all over), but makes it a bit more difficult to find non-predator animals. Also, I've only seen boar out during the day, so hunting them at night may not be so fruitful.
Hunting hints for specific animals (separated into spoilers for individual species):
Armadillos:
You'll likely get the hunting challenge right before you go to Mexico. While you can find them sporadically in New Austin (like near Hanging Rock, and sometimes near MacFarlane Ranch), armadillos are very easy to find south of the border.
Bears:
You won't be able to get bears before reaching West Elizabeth. When you get there: "bears are the new cougar, yo." They're in Tall Trees.
Boars:
The only place to find boars before West Elizabeth is North of MacFarlane Ranch (there's a picture of them on your map). You can also find some in the swamp near Thieves Landing. Otherwise you'll see them in Tall Trees occasionally and along the southern Great Plains.
Bobcats:
Mexican cougars. I don't think they're needed for any challenges, specifically. Central Mexico tends to work well enough.
Cougars:
RIGHT BEHIND YOU!
North of MacFarlane Ranch in the brown grass. Rio Bravo south of the road. Occasionally in Tall Trees when bears aren't wrecking your shit. Tend to show up in the Great Plains as well (near the treeline tends to happen for me).
Coyotes:
North and south of Armadillo (around the lake or W/NW of Hanging Rock. They tend to be all over in Mexico as well. Basically anywhere you can get a wolf you can also get a coyote. It's basically impossible to get hurt by them so there's no reason you'd fail the sharpshooter challenge. Tend to be easier to find at night.
Deer:
Nearly as prolific as rabbits. They tend to be out more during the day.
Foxes:
Foxes can be found pretty easily in the highlands northwest of MacFarlane Ranch. If you go above the snowline and put bait down you'll get wolves or foxes (if you put it down below the snowline you may also get foxes, but then you may also get cougars).
Rabbits:
Ubiquitous. You may need to flush them out of tall grass or bushes (or look very carefully for moving foliage). Tend to be more common in New Austin around MacFarlane's Ranch and near the lake.
Racoons:
They only come out at night (dawn/dusk works) . You'll find some south of Armadillo. Others can be found N/NE and S of MacFarlane Ranch.
Skunks:
Two skunks spawn spawn behind the general store in Armadillo at dusk/night; you'll be able to find them just south of the city. If you need more skunks (which you will) try south of the horse herd picture in eastern Mexico at night. Skunks mostly come out at night, mostly.
Wolves:
West of Perdido (where it's written on the map, anyway) in Mexico has an abundance. They tend to come in large pacts in the Eastern section as well. If you're desparate early on, Gaptooth Ridge can have them. They'll also come up in the highlandds north of MacFarlane Ranch fairly often - especially with bait. Anywhere with "del Lobo" in the name will generally have wolves too (so south of Armadillo near the lake).
When I was trying for the Bearly Legal achievement last night every freaking time I'd use the bait in Tall Trees or Aurora Basin the only thing that would ever come when I used it was herds of deer. Never bears.
Though pretty much anywhere else I used it in the world all I got was wolves so maybe I had terrible luck.
Also regarding boars; I've never seen them north of MacFarlane Ranch but I would see them regularly in the swampy areas south of Thieves Landing. Really though there's no need to stress about it too much before you can get to the great plains. The Buffalo rifle isn't amazing. You can only do one shot in Dead Eye and while it's really powerful and really useful against bears (one shot them with a deadeye in the head), the high ammo repeaters and pistols are far better to use in your general gameplay against human opponents.
Discovered that I'm unable to join my friends if they're playing, which is frustrating. I can invite them as much as I want, but if they're busy or something, this won't accomplish much.
If anything I'd have to say Mexico was kind of dull and contained some of the most annoying characters. But things really picked up afterwards.
Mexico is really sort of broken. It's way too big, the trails are all twisty and it takes forever to get anywhere, both major towns are sandwiched together on one side, the story is borderline nonsensical since you have to work for both the government and the rebels, etc.
I get the distinct feeling that you were supposed to choose between helping the rebels and helping the government. Especially since both sides give you a mission where you get a sniper rifle and act like it's your first time having one, even if you've already gotten it from the other mission. It would have made more narrative sense too.
Anyone who hasn't gotten this yet...Gamestop (o noes, da debil!) has a coupon, "GS29" that is 15% off and free shipping that works with RDR. Thank you Gizmodo deals.

This is only the case if their room is full, inless you're talking about a weird network issue.
So I 100%ed today and got a good chunk of challenges done with Nickle and his friend just now. I only have the achievement for level fifty, the five hundred kills with pistols and mounted weapons, and four team wins to go until 1000/1000, too - which I really want to try and do before the new achievements and content on the 22nd. If anyone wants to give me a hand over the next week that would be awesome.

It really to me helped me to connect with the character, I mean after New Austin it seemed like John was getting fed up with the standard video game "Sure I'll help you but do this this this and all this is going to go wrong and get in your way". It just really made me feel like he wanted it over as soon as possible and all these people making him do their errands was pissing him off.

Bears:
Boars:
Bobcats:
Cougars:
Coyotes:
Deer:
Foxes:
Rabbits:
Racoons:
Skunks:
Wolves:
