I guess I am like the only person that really enjoyed the Mexico Parts?
I really liked Mexico, but it was probably because I thought the later parts of Act 1 were slow (I didn't like the characters you meet). My only issue with Mexico is the winding roads... and even then if you just ride along the railroad tracks, you will be fine.
I'm playing through again and I swear I'm having so much more fun this time. No rush to finish it, just enjoying the scenery and random encounters. That's really where some of the best stuff in the game comes from, the living world and environments.

Mexico was awesome if for no other reason than Landon Ricketts, aka Sam Elliott.

I liked the Mexican parts, especially after the swarm of shitheads you have to cooperate with in Act 1's climax
As soon as I rode in and met up with Landon Ricketts I thought "This land will be kind to me. Viva Mexico." Granted, as I got to know Reyes, Luisa, and the military, I gradually came to dislike the major characters, but I still enjoy being "the American" during my poker visits to Chuparosa. Pancho'd, of course.
Can anyone give me some tips for shooting the hats off of dude's heads? I tried it in a duel but I ended up putting a bullet in the guys forehead instead.

Yeah do not try and aim at the high point on the hat, that ends in someone bleeding at your feet. The lower brim to the side works really well.

I got that one entirely by accident while doing the first Marshall mission. I died because I was going for a head shot but what are you gonna do?

Imagine the head continues into the hat. Because it does. Now aim where the head is not. :P

I didn't mind Mexico so much, but it was too long and too big, which prevented it from being more than just "ok". Cut about 1/3 of the back-and-forth story missions, 1/3 of the map (the middle third just east of Chuparosa), and use that extra gametime and space to further flesh out West Elizabeth.
I understand why they wanted to spend as much time as they did in Mexico (Western tropes), but from a gameplay and story perspective, it did tend to drag the game down a bit.
So my husband saw the credits roll tonight but according to the R* Social Club stats page he has never played the game. It accurately lists his achievements, though. And he put in a ticket they never answered. :P
Agh. Not having the internet at home suuuuuucks. Especially since I have been off work for 4 days and I finished this game during that time and had no way of discussing the ending.
So yeah.
The uh. The ending is amazing.
Thoughts?

Mexico Spoilers
It really to me helped me to connect with the character, I mean after New Austin it seemed like John was getting fed up with the standard video game "Sure I'll help you but do this this this and all this is going to go wrong and get in your way". It just really made me feel like he wanted it over as soon as possible and all these people making him do their errands was pissing him off.
It took a while to grow on me but I think Mexico was my favourite part in the end. The characters were all douchebags, but so were most of the characters in the other areas. I thought the missions in Mexico were really good and more varied than other places
Like stealthy train stealing, sniping, full on assaults on forts with cannons and stuff, and horrible stagecoach missions, versus New Austin's lots of ranch stuff, fairly short assaults, and horrible stagecoach missions.
And I thought the music in Mexico was by far the best. New Austin's was okay but I loved the guitar and horns in Mexico. And West Elizabeth's music nearly gave me nightmares so...
There was a bit too much back-and-forth, like riding from a town halfway over the map to get a mission and having to ride back to the town you just came from to do the mission. But on the flipside I found Mexico a lot easier to navigate than New Austin and I like charging around on my horse so I didn't really care.
What I would really like is if after completing the game there was an option to replay it with everything already unlocked. New Austin would be a lot more fun to replay if you had all the weapons and stuff you don't get until Mexico.
It angers me that Mexico is the greatest place to ride around in and the worst place to actually interact with anybody. Fucking gooses, but damn the landscape is great.
Hmmm. According to the guide I'm reading I should have discovered the US Army outfit by now (I've finished the mission An Appointed Time), but it's still not in my outfits list. What event adds this to my list of outfits?
I think you may need to actually ride into West Elizabeth for it to 'unlock' (at least I got a new outfit unlock thing when I crossed over the river near the rail road camp).

Probably posted, but Zero Punctuation this week is RDR. This should be interesting.
The "walking into the side of a door, turning around to try again and walking into the other side of the door" bit cracked me up. I do that a lot when I'm trying to hurry.
I think a lot of his complaints are pretty fair, except he says the horses don't control very well and I think they control beautifully and he is obviously retarded.

Plus he obviously overlooked the option to turn off auto-aim and make the game actually challenging.
That I had left more to do for Jack before I finished the game. I loved the fact that Jack takes over and you are given a new character to play as. I thought it was a stroke of genius. But I finished basically everything I could before doing the final missions of the game, thinking I was being all organised and stuff.
But then I heard that the stranger missions have cutscenes for both John and Jack, and I really wish I had left some more stuff to do. Cause now Jack is basically aimless. I just have to discover a couple more bounty locations and I am 100% done.
Does anyone know if you can ignore all of the stranger missions (except I know you) and Jack can do them all instead?

Most of his crits were right on. But the thing is that most games are just time sinks, and if this is a brilliant time sink that's pretty good. It's very rare to get something deeper and lasting to think about after a game is done. Off the cuff all that comes to mind right now is Deus Ex and Cryostasis, but there's obviously a lot more. Shadow of the Colossus, actually is a good one as well.
Last night I got the single weirdest glitch ever. I am riding into thieves landing right and the stage coach is doing that weird hydraulic bump thing being the first time I had seen it I looked for a minute when I hear a scream from the bridge in the center of town. I see a stage coach or one of the larger carts just catapult off the bridge (I have never seen one even go on there before) knocking some dude over and just float the rest of the way down the river.
Funny RL story. Talking to my friend and the conversation goes:
Me: "Man I'm tired. I was up late picking flowers."
Friend: "For your wife?"
Me: "No, in Red Dead Redemption for a challenge."
Friend: "So the game makes you a sissy?"
Me: "Well, while picking flowers I got into a knife fight with a pack of wolves, so...call it what you will."
Friend: "I need to get this game."

I think you can save all of the Stranger missions, except for I Know You, for post-game. I'm bettin on that with my second playthrough.
Its actually playthrough 2.3. I let Mo get away and then got distracted by a bunch of stuff and saved on my very first playthrough, so I started over. I played the whole way through the game, hoping he would show up on the new file, but he never did.
end/post-game spoilers
Reading that Jack has unique dialog for Stranger missions made me want to play it again.
"Jack is still able to complete any unfinished missions with his own speech dialogue."
"Jack has recorded dialogue for every side mission which could have been completed as John."
from the RDR wiki
And I really want to play through as much of the storyline as I can wearing the Deadly Assassin outfit, because I think it looks awesome.

Hmmm. Already ridden all the way into Blackwater and done the first mission there and still nothing.
Hmmm. Apparently I have to do the Nightwatchman job in Blackwater.
Love this game, but I totally would have taken the option to radically turn down the number of bad guys if it had been offered.
Not that it's too hard. They do a really good job at making the combat fun and John's a bad ass. But the sheer number of mans you are required to kill on a given mission always feels twice as high as it needs to be -- for me, at least.

Yeah, pretty much, but things'll start to pick up now.
Really, Mexico's just about the only thing that bogs the game down. Everything else was pretty fantastic.

I go to the point on the map where they are marked, I see none, and then a cougar eats my horse.
Anyhow - fantastic game.

Ending stuff:
I am noticing that a lot of people are missing the best and most important stranger mission in the game (aside from I Know You).
That is the ending of it all.
There should be a note in the OP saying that the game isn't over 'til you see the credits.
