The D&D [Political Compass] Survey!

edited June 2010 in Debate and/or Discourse
Now better! We have a Poll! Thank you Mods!
Please reference the following grid number to identify yourself.
4661428656_270dd51822.jpg

KevinNash has gone through the trouble of putting reference labels on the grid. This is the updated version that's no longer hampered by my flawed grid. Naturally, it's still no perfect indicator of your individual position, so don't let it get to you.

KevinNash' Grid
pcgraphpng_new.png

I present to you the first ever PA D&D Political Compass poll.

The idea is simple. Each of us takes a short, ~40 question political quiz to identify our ideological leanings. We will be using the Political Compass test. Naturally, any Internet instrument I choose for this is subject to heavy criticism. To keep this thread from becoming too meta however, please post your bitching about the instrument in spoilers. Like so.
This test totally sucks! We should be using that test instead.

Please include in your bitching what test you would prefer. Who knows, it may become the choice for the next such thread.

Would you kindly:

1. Follow link. Take test.
2. Post your coordinates, so that others can do fancy statistical analysis. You find your coordinates in the URL of the printable graph version of the results. They are found after "ec=" and "soc=". If you look at the URL of my picture below, you will find that I score ec=4.25 and soc=-5.79.
3. Post a picture of your graph, in spoilers, like so.
pcgraphpng.php?ec=4.25&soc=-5.79

Please note that the axes are labelled using the British meaning of the terms, not the American. Left => Liberal, Libertarian => Anarchist, Right => Conservative.

This is based on a short discussion on the political leanings of the PA D&D subforum in the Rand Paul thread.

Enjoy!

It's worth noting that this is not the first time this has been done, and that this test is basically designed to make everyone think they're a libertarian.

Really because I'm pretty damn far from big L Libertarianism on this scale. I think they just suck at labeling their axis.

I hate some of these questions and how they're phrased.

"A significant advantage of a one-party state is that it avoids all the arguments that delay progress in a democratic political system."

Why yes, speed of decision making is an advantage of a one-party state. But I don't want one no matter how advantageous that is.

So, remembering the last time I took this, I seem a lot more vehement in my choices. I used to only rarely choose "strongly."

I think you're thinking of the World's Smallest Political Quiz. This one, I learned about from the NYT.
Also, please post your alternative. I'm wide open (:winky:) to suggestions.

    Oh, this test.

I find the left/right axis to be meaningless other than for historical discussion of the French revolution.

This test neatly sums up why, as it classified me a slightly left (oh wow) and slightly authoritarian (correct). Must have been all the anti-corporation responses.

    Hi
This is one of the less biased versions of this test I've seen. But Thanatos is probably right, the test does skew questions to put people into the libertarian quadrant. That said if everyone takes the same test at least we can compare with that bias in mind.

    Economic Left/Right: 5.62
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.59

Yeah, that test is much more about how it's creator is a disingenuous douchebag then the actual politics of the responders.

Though posting it now is quite appropriate given the recent discussion in the Rand Paul thread about the efforts by Ron Paul supporters to use deceit (spam etc...) to give the false impression that their ideology is more widely accepted than it is.

If I want to add a poll to this thread to compile responses, do I have to ask a mod? How does it work?

I should have mentioned. The axes follow the British meaning of these terms, not the American. Replace "Libertarian" with "Anarchist," and it makes more sense in an American context.

Centrist espouse a "middle ground" regarding government control of the economy and personal behavior. Depending on the issue, they sometimes favor government intervention and sometimes support individual freedom of choice. Centrists pride themselves on keeping an open mind, tend to oppose "political extremes," and emphasize what they describe as "practical" solutions to problems.

The funniest moment on this board for me will always be when we finally had a poll to see who we supported in the political primaries and it ended up being over 95% in favor of Obama (keeping in mind it was still January or February or so and there were both Rep and Dem candidates in the poll), and all of a sudden everyone stopped making any pretense towards impartiality and working towards getting him elected.

    Well, libertarian means different things.

Libertarian as opposite of authoritarian is not the same as "Libertarian as espoused by the American Libertarian Party."

It just means "in general, liberty is better for people than strictures".
