The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
A game set in the bygone world of 1988. It takes place on BBSes, and two people meet to form a bond that will shake the foundations of even ARPANET.
Digital is a free indie title, and stands somewhere between an adventure game and a visual novel. It takes place entirely on BBSes, mimicing the primitive protoweb of these days (down to dialing area codes. yipee).
As described by the author herself:
A computer mystery/romance set five minutes into the future of 1988.
I can guarantee at least one of the following is a real feature:
*Discover a vast conspiracy lurking on the internet
*Save the world by exploiting a buffer overflow
*Get away with telephone fraud
*HACK THE GIBSON!
Which one? you'll just have to dial and see. Welcome to the 20th century
Will run on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. It was released two months ago so modern OSs should be no issue. It is not terribly long and barely anyone has even heard of it. If you are a fan of the genre or just have some time to kill I'd give this a go. Probably less than a thousand people even played this so if you like it please keep spreading it around.
As a side note it assumes the player/and or character is either male or a lesbian. Can't really shift everything about for the opposing case.
"All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible." - T.E. Lawrence
I played this when I first read about it on Rock, Paper, Shotgun. It's a nice, little trifle. Will last you a couple hours, and is entertaining enough. You will get tired of dialing phone numbers. But a nice nostalgia piece.
As its mostly story driven I can't really expand on it much without ruining the plot.
