I can't decide which epic pool to go with on my dominator. On one hand, I can have fire ball, rain of fire and melt armor. On the other hand I can get perma-sleet, near perma-hoarfrost aka dull pain and ice storm.
Some friends and I were thinking of having a play of City of Heroes while we wait for the WoW expansion, I've played a little in the past but gave up because it felt like too much of a grind. I was just wondering a few things:
Is there some variety in the levelling nowadays? When I played they had semi-randomised missions but you spent the bulk of each level doing the same few, and most other players just pushed through the same "quick" levelling path over and over. It's a problem in most MMOs, but when the game revolves around creating alt characters it got a bit boring.
Is there still a penalty when you die? I heard they introduced a rested xp variant to the game but when I played the penalty for dying would ruin our morale pretty fast. I can handle a penalty, but at the time it felt like a lot for a game not focused on pvp.
How would someone with the expansion handle playing with someone who doesn't have it? I'm assuming this isn't like Catyclysm where everyone gets a revamp, can you switch sides from hero to villain without it? It's not super expensive but I'd like to know how we'll fare if not everyone wants to invest fully. Specifically, could I be a hero-turned-villain and play with my no-expansion villain friends?
Just got shipping confirmation from best buy. This round I swear I am going to make more of an effort to play with the PA guys.
I'd just like to thank the CoX regulars on here. I remember most of you guys from when I first started playing the game at release and its good to see a few familiar members for such a long time. You all are really friendly and helpful to us that walk in and out of the game and you don't make this thread into some sort of "club" where newer posters dont feel very welcome.
Do I look like the sort of man who'd go and find unsuspecting Japanese schoolgirls in short skirts and white panties and ask them if they want to see my "Cthulu Special"?
Damn, I bought the game on steam and it downloaded plenty fast, but now I have to use the CoH Updater and it's slow as hell. Is the updater always slow or is it just the influx of fresh blood?
Yes, it is a pretty big update you are downloading (I have no idea why Going Rogue isn't on Steam) and the servers are getting hammered.

I'm logged in, but when I click "Buy now" on the expansion pack it says I have no eligible account for that item. Do I need the $40 complete collection?
It has been so long since I've played past the first handful of levels without joining a higher-level team, that I forgot the punishing, slow pace this game has when you're like level 10 fighting white cons on a 4-man team. Then you hit level 12 like two hours later and are rewarded with hurdle. Ugh.
I'm logged in, but when I click "Buy now" on the expansion pack it says I have no eligible account for that item. Do I need the $40 complete collection?
I think to get the expansion you need to have an current/active account. So you'd have to resub to buy that one.
So its 29.99 + 15 witht he expansion or 39.99 for the complete pack that comes with 30 days of game time.
Plus someone could send you a refer back key if you have been inactive for 90 days that would net 15 extra days on top of the time you'd get from the complete pack if you buy that. If you toss me your email in a PM I can send you a resub code.
Can the complete pack for $40 be used to effectively resub to the game, or does it force you to make a new account with it?
It can be used to resub. But you can get a resub code from someone to get an extra 15 days, as long as you've been unsubbed for 90 days. Just apply the resub invite first, then the complete pack code. If you PM me your email I can send you a resub code.
I think it was determined yesterday that the 30days gametime with GR doesn't count as a "paid" month for the "invite back" program. They'd still have to pay for the month after the free one to get it to trigger.

Thats kinda weird considering it worked with the architect edition. Wonder if something has changed, because technically you are paying for the time by purchasing the box, its included in the price. :?
When I asked about it here yesterday see317 said that the invite back promo wouldn't accept that GR code as a valid subscription code, that it only took payment information of some sort in order to have it trigger.
But maybe he did it wrong? I dunno. I still haven't decided to get GR or not so I cant say.

Well you need to have valid payment information on file so it may not have been asking for a payment but for an updated credit card?
I know, from what I vaguely remember, when I signed up with CoV I had a similar experience, I got a month with the game but had to provide it a valid credit card to activate it. But the whole system has changed since then.
Could be, with all the people coming back right now I'm sure someone is bound to have figured it out for sure by now.
EDIT: I forgot how boring Masterminds are early in their life. Probably not the best choice of a class to pick when trying to find out if I want to resub.
EDIT EDIT: Is there any good reason to not choose a praetorian for a new character at this point?

Oh that depends entirely on the MM though!
Demon MM's can be fun with the whip power. And I always got a kick out of the rifle bots MMs get.
Dual pistols can be a lot of fun if you haven't tried it yet. Its snazzy on a blaster and a corr.
EDIT EDIT: Is there any good reason to not choose a praetorian for a new character at this point?
Thematics? And you can't have a SG in Praetoria. I personally like starting characters in CoV myself so I will still probably use that. But any heroes I start will definitely start in Praetoria.
masterminds are roughly a hundred billion times more entertaining when you actually take their attacks. And since demon summoning's attacks are worth taking, well then.
I have a thug/dark MM on my actual account that I enjoyed immensely.
Demons actually fit that character better thematically but I doubt I'd want to start all the way over to make that switch.
Unrelated; man, I just can't find the sweet spot for my system with graphic settings that both look good and perform well. I almost wish they hadn't added all the advanced settings they've got now. Turning many of them off doesn't seem to help either.
EDIT: I give up entirely on AA. It doesn't play well in this game with any other setting. I can get the game to look and run really really well but if I turn up AA at all i go from a billion FPS to 2.

see317 must have resubbed just on the monthly subscription, though, because i still got credit for the reinvite.
so good on him, bff see317

is there any benefit to being super-hero or super-villain (instead one of the 'half-way' alignments) beyond their particular 7-day powers?

Praetoria is a bit of a trap. You're stuck there until level 20 I believe. It's a nice area with better than average quest design, but it'll pretty severely restrict your grouping options for the first 20 levels. At least once the ooh shiny phase wears off.

If you run tip missions and reinforce your heroicness or villioness you get stuff, the first time 50 merits the second and each additional time you get 1 hero/villain merit which you can turn in for stuff like purples or pvp IO's or all kinds of crazyness.

I think I missed a contact in Praetoria. I'm only level 4 but the only contact I have is giving me missions in level 8 areas.
Once I finished the tutorial I picked rebel but there was only loyalist missions from what I could tell. Is there an early contact that I missed or something? I finished the first guys arc and then got contacted by the level 8 duder.

So, I liked this game before and I was considering playing again, especially since one of the big reasons I stopped playing was nobody to play with. WHAT SAY YE?
Edit: And I'd probably have to buy the game again because I can't seem to remember my account information.
Edit2: If I'd have known that pre-ordering Going Rogue allowed for Demon Summoning... I would have done that...

I've always been curious why people can't remember account information. I have maybe 2 variations on account names and most places offer password recovery. Do people just use completely random account names or something? I've just always been curious as that seems to be a common problem.
Also you can still play a demon summoner, that just means that the people who pre-purchased got to play with it earlier.

You can do demon summoning without having preordered.

Well, then the OP has lied to me. It says Demon Summoning (If you prepurchased Going Rogue)

Some game sites have global accounts and game specific accounts, some let you use the same login for both, some don't. Some websites restrict how many characters max you can use, some enforce a minimum.
Also, if you're playing F2P games you don't really want to use your pay-to-play account details with them, so that adds another group of usernames/passwords.

The problem is the two terms pre-purchase and pre-order.
The pre-purchase was a thing you could do a while back where you got early access to dual pistols and demon summoning.
The pre-order is just like any other pre-order of a game. GameStop had exclusives ect.

You're right. I assumed that they were the same thing? I've seen them used interchangebly, so I assumed that they were the same. I guess I was wrong? Well, that's cool.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound rude or anything. Yes there is a distinction in this case between the two which has actually been quite annoying with new players coming back as it is logical to assume it means pre-order. Also technically it is pre-ordering as it unlocks the game anyway, but all the pre-order or pre-purchase or whatever you want to call it did is unlock demon summoning and dual pistols early for people who wanted to pay back when they offered it. Sorry for any confusion.

The punishment for dying is now trivial
You can't switch sides without the expansion, but if you switched from red to blue your blueside friends can still play with you
How annoying are the sounds, and how good is the AoE control with the KD/KB powers?
And the most important question, which colour looks the best for the ripple effects in the powerset?
