Nostalgia, in no sense is a four letter word. I wish it would stop being used as such.
It's not even a valid complaint, really
Super Mario Galaxy did some really neat and exciting stuff for the 3D platformer
I can only assume that the sequel follows suit
I'm unconvinced that Galaxy (and Galaxy 2) would have been particularly popular or well-received games if they did not feature the Mario "brand." Or some other established "brand."
Yes, they did some neat and exciting stuff. They also did a lot of old and well-covered stuff. With a fairly minimal art style that, honestly, some people may find unappetizing on their big screen.
I remember the point during Galaxy when I asked myself, "Would I be playing this game if it didn't say 'Mario' on the cover?" And answering myself. Then I stopped playing it.
Which is not to say it was bad, it's just that given a limited amount of time and a limited videogame budget, it probably wouldn't have otherwise made the cut. I'd never claim that it banks on nostalgia alone, but I feel that while the series continues to try and do new things it has reached the point where it's banking more on nostalgia than actually delivering captivating standalone experiences.
EDIT: And it's not "cartoony-ness" that gets me, either. Just to avoid that old cliche. Pretty much every game I had for the Wii (all of which I loved) was "cartoony" as all hell. Except Guitar Hero, I suppose. It's just...I dunno, Mario games in particular just don't "do it" for me anymore.
That seems like an odd thing to do. I would buy that excuse if a game was really mediocre or flat out sucked. Then I could see that argument. I would agree if it didn't have the name "Mario", it would probably not sell as much, but the quality is too high to ignore, especially when it comes to the platforming. Very tight and precise control (unbelievable how many games can't get controls correct), high, constant framerate, it is pretty incredible how in control you really are of the character. The game certainly has fan service, but I wouldn't say that the game is completely based around nostalgia. Something like Tetris DS would be more accurate for that imo. I would find it hard to believe if someone is a fan of platforming, but not like mario galaxy, yet I'm sure those people exist.
The Mario series of platformers is one of the few game series that really gets to the core of why games were played in the first place, just being fun to play and being quite imaginitive at that. So many games are so focused on making some pointless story or trying so hard to make a place be realistic, but then forget to make the game really fun. The levels in mario galaxy don't need to make sense, they exist to be fun first and foremost. Lots of older games were like this, but assisted by limitations in technology. Doom is a perfect example of this. I'm very much of the arcade style of game design because the top priority is gameplay first and foremost.
Okay, I didn't actually bother listening to the 3 minute video before making my 3D comment so I commented on what would have made sense to me as a criticism involving the amount of 2D style gameplay.
Now that I've listened to the video I can safely say that I have no idea what she is talking about. "Needs a more 3D look?" It "looks flat?" I don't really get those things from Galaxy 2.
That said, if the game isn't for her then it's not for her. No sense getting up in arms about it. I don't agree with her but I just say "yay opinions" and then I move on. Her points are valid for her and mine are valid for me.
This is the situation that Mario finds itself in, with it's incredibly simplistic stories, art design, environments, characters, dialogue, etc, and beyond the gameplay, it has nothing for adults.
Dude, have you gotten all 242 stars in Galaxy 2? That shit is hard as balls. Nothing for adults my ass. I'd like to meet the 8 year old who cleared this game 100%. Just because it looks cartoony doesn't mean it's intended solely for children. I can't stand it when people don't realize this. People have forgotten that Nintendo cut their teeth on kicking our collective asses as kids back in the late 80s/early 90s. If this chick is complaining that it feels like a kids game, she's a fucking idiot. It sounds like she's just trolling to begin with anyway.

He did say "beyond the gameplay" it has nothing for adults, which is kind of like saying there's nothing to eat in this fridge except a giant pizza.
Really though, I don't see why cartoony characters and simple storylines are automatically not suitable for adults. As C.S. Lewis said, when I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

Darth Nathan's argument would have some merit if it wasn't the fact that it's a video game, and the interactive element is what sets it apart from all other entertainment mediums. As it is, actually playing the game is what matters.
The game could have been about Care Bears adventuring in Candyland for all I care. If the gameplay is as tight as SMG's, then I can give a fuck-all about the aesthetics, which are now incidental to the game.
(I also reject the notion that adults cannot enjoy Care Bears and/or Candyland.)
I really don't care what she thinks. So she has a lousy opinion, big deal! I'm more concerned that there are guys who think she's hot when she looks like a tranny.
