I love that commentators have been calling this Obama's Katrina, which makes no god damned sense.

Katrina was a natural disaster. The government has an entire organization that is supposed to be equipped to aid places hit too hard to sustain themselves. The whole idea of FEMA is that they can do this, and they failed.

The oil spill is because a corporation done fucked up. The government doesn't haven any sort of equipment to handle it, because it's not an oil company. All it can do is get on BP's ass and make them pay out for what they've done.

Basically they're trying to find anyway to make Obama look like the devil.

    Obama's Katrina
    Obama's Waterloo
    Obama's Watergate

I'm surprised this Flotila raid hasn't been called Obama's Cuban Missile Crisis yet.

News media aren't allowed to say anything bad about their jewish overlords.

Blah blah politics whateverish. I preferred the Tetris angle.

Would this still be a Jerry Bruckheimer film if it were made nowadays, or would it be Michael Bay instead?

This is a very underrated comic.

I think Bruckheimer still works, they're both more on the producer side of things now anyway right?

Bruckheimer has always been a producer. He's never once directed a film.

So that comic should really read Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer but whatever, I still love it and it gets the point across

I just don't get what's pumping all this oil at this rate/pressure.

Is that how it works? You drill for oil and it just spews out forever like the Beverly Hillbillies?

I assumed that it was due to cubic miles of rock pressing down on it.

Imagine a bottomless, oil-filled pimple being pressed together between two rock fingers for all eternity

The oil is in a porous rock structure (like water in a sponge) covered by a non-porous rock that stops it glooping into the sea. When you drill, you go through the non-porous rock and lay pipe as you go, so that the pressure of the oil forces it up the pipe. What happened here is the rig blew up and broke that pipe at the sea floor, so the oil has a direct path to get all up in everyone's business.

    Exactly.

Drilling rigs use multiple safety systems in order to contain this pressure (well, they're supposed to work, but this one obviously did not). They have the Blow-Out Preventer (BOP), which is your last line of defense. It's used to direct the flow of drilling fluid, and in an emergency situation, close off the pipe that's going all the way up to the rig at the surface of the water. In conventional, non-offshore rigs, this bop is right at ground level.

The main way of controlling the pressure in any drilling process (natural gas or oil), is by maintaining your cirulation system. By modifying the density of the drilling fluid (additives and such), when used in high volume it can contain the wellbore pressure that wants to escape. This drilling fluid is also use to carry the "cuttings" from the drill bit up to the rig floor, where the solids are filtered out and the fluid is pumped down the drill string again for another cycle.
