I thought they were warming up
nope
they were playing
Yeah... anyone who picked up a sax could make whatever the fuck the saxaphonist was doing. The Drummer/bassist seemed kind of alright... but I could only make it about 1:30 in the vid. I didn't want to find out the rest.
I didn't really appreaciate Kandinsky's work (or abstract art in general) until I started working on this. I liked abstraction (well, some of it) but I didn't really understand how complex these compositions really were, they just seemed like random marks. Something like this would have been hell to plan.
So my friends and I put a gig on the other night and a few people turned up:
We hired all the PA, lights, barriers, etc. helped load/unload and build the stage; did all the food/beer catering ourselves; organised our own security people; dealt with management, contracts, invoicing, etc. etc. Basically, no small amount of work.
BUT it was an amazing, absolutely awesome night, I can't believe we pulled it off.
I did a screenprinted poster for the gig and sold everything I'd brought with me -- even the display print with tape on the back.
Probably the most satisfying thing I've done in a while. More pics here.
Apologies for the sickening sound of me blarping my own trumpet -- I'm just very proud of the achievement!
Fiance gets her iPhone 4 today. Her Mac doesn't have OSX 10.5.8, so I decide to try my 7-year-old G5 tower. It needs an update, so I tell it to do so. Halfway through the install, I get an error message:
"The destination drive is corrupt. Install has failed. Please restart your computer."
Upon restarting, it jams up with a big gray apple on the screen. Two minutes later, the fan kicks in on the tower, in a constant increase of strength and power until it sounds like a freaking jet engine blasting out of the back of my computer. I hold down the power button out of fear that it's going to explode and unleash a torrent of metal shards into my face like something out of Final Destination.
After significant testing, I find out the following:
- Evidently the failed update install left the boot drive with only half of a functional operating system, so the thing is pretty much bricked at this point.
- The tower no longer detects the USB ports. Additionally, the USB's on the monitor are also seemingly dead. This has effectively cut off my ability to start the computer in "Safe Mode," since holding the shift key on the keyboard does nothing.
- On the same note, the disc drive also doesn't open, because the button for THAT is also on the keyboard. So I can't even insert the disc in order to re-install/repair the OS. Thank you for your brilliant design sense, Apple.
I have two hard drives installed in the tower. One is the boot disc with the OS, the other my data drive with all my archived files for my art, music and such. I'm fairly confident that it was just the boot disc that failed, since it had been giving me problems for awhile now. This means I'll likely have to either get a new internal drive and format it as a boot volume to replace the old, or save up for a new tower, which I've been meaning to do for a few years now. Unfortunately either option will have to wait until after my wedding. Two months from now.
Maybe I can pry the freaking disc tray open with a screwdriver or something. This is frustrating the HELL out of me.
My mac crashed doing an update a few years ago. The problem with macs is that they are sold with not enough ram. I maxed the ram out and have not had any more problems. But don't buy ram from mac, just order some and stick it in yourself,
Yeah, a RAM upgrade would be the first of several upgrades I'd need to make to get this thing up to task. Ultimately I've decided to forgo my plans for anything extravagant until Christmas in an effort to save up cash for a new tower. Seven years is too long to run with a single computer (although in its defense, it certainly was a trooper up until last night).
Last night after getting the tray open (thanks again, Mustang), I managed to get a clean install of OSX 10.5.... after about three tries, having it quit out in the middle each time. The last try finally went through, and I realized upon reboot that the process completely cleared out my Applications folder -- which is strange, considering that it saved all the application preferences -- so it's pretty much like I have a clean slate with a new operating system. Now I just have to find all my archive discs to reinstall everything. Thank God I saved those (most of them, anyway). Also, my data drive survived this incident untouched, so none of my comics/music/creative stuff were damaged. So I was happy about that.
Then the a/c decided to die in the middle of the night and we woke up to a house that's 83 degrees inside and rising, on a day that is projected to be 97 degrees by noon. THE FUN TIMES JUST KEEP ON ROLLING.
Edit: Holy crap, that painting makes my fingers cry.
Peter, yeah I'm a die-hard mac user and normally they will run forever and not give you a problem. But when they do screw up, it's pure hell. My imac is around 6 years old and I still plan on getting a couple more years out of it. My first mac was black and white and came with 2 MB ram.

I had a dream last night that huge eldritch aliens attacked the city and I managed to lead a bunch of people to safety and find a gun and shoot at some of them. Later I found out that Beavotron lived in that city so I called her up under the guise of seeing if she was okay but in reality I just wanted to brag that I shot some aliens.
Ah man, check out what my buddy Mike painted at the Illustration Master Class.
Bastard.
Thats ridiculously beautiful.
Theres one thing that is jumping out at me and buggin the crap out of me. The pole for the standard doesn't leave a shadow on the banner. This is really nitpicky considering how good the painting is, but its like a laser beam into my critique brain.

To me it looks like that shadow is being washed out by holy light behind her head.

If the light is causing that distinct a shadow from her head, it would leave a shadow from the pole.

Oh jeez you're right. That head shadow is really dark. Multiple light sources maybe? Like a bright light from the right, and a dimmer one from the front?

I guess I should do that.
Also, Studio Ghibli is making a PS3 game!

Grenn - That's awesome, which one is you?
Cake - I'm not in any of the pics, as I was taking them! The band is Hot Water Music from Gainesville, FL.
A close up:
And here it is on the easel:
Sur - Yeah its Joan of Arc, one of the 6 assignments they gave out at IMC (we each pick one).
no it's Jeanne D'Arc
15 hours copying this as accurately as you can:
But seriously though, do some Bridgman studies, but don't try to copy the way he hatches or anything, just copy the volumes and forms.
I'm English, every ignominy I can stack upon her gets me brownie points with the Queen.
