You can't edit the criminal records of fellow agents, I tried it last night.

Did you enter their screen name or real name? I got a fellow agent arrested in a mission, felt bad, and went to clear his criminal record using the name that was in the news report. They didn't let him out of jail, alas.

The FBI mod added this. You clear a person's record, click authorize release, and then get a news report saying that a some computer error caused the person to be falsely imprisoned.

You should have a file deleter program. It works on more than just systems you're hacking into.

But there is one little thing I never understood about this game: why the hell isn't there a command line interface for doing everything? Maybe not everything everything, but having to click on different things here and there chews up so much more time than just being able to command line most of it.

Check out Street Hacker. I've played several hacking games, including many hours spent with Uplink, but my favorite is Street Hacker. It just feels more authentic to me. It's all done from a console. You whois to find an ip address, scan them for open ports, run scripts to exploit those ports, etc. You can also go the password cracking route, or install a password sniffer for getting onto LANs. There's also a virus designing service. You don't hack from your home, but instead go into a building with wi-fi. You can buy devices to disable security systems to make you harder to spot, and you can carry weapons for if you get caught by security. If you get too notorious in one city, buy a plane ticket for another. It's an indie game like Uplink, but feels pretty polished to me.

With all that said, though, I think I'll reinstall Uplink. I haven't played it in several years now. I never quite did get the hang of deleting logs, but that was mainly because I didn't realize I just had to delete my InterNIC stuff. I remember some crazy mods with like gateways that could hold 50 cpus and stuff.

Actually, I have a question. Say you hack a computer and your tracer says you have 1 minute. You do your stuff and log out with 5 seconds left. Does that mean you have 5 seconds to fix your logs on your first bounce point? Or is that a separate, hidden timer?

Pretty sure the active trace is separate from the passive trace.
:edit: that said, I wouldn't be surprised if the passive trace starts at the point where the active trace ended.

Robbing banks seems a little broken.

I got this mission to trace a money transfer when I was about "Skilled" level. I was barely scraping by, earning 5-8k per mission, spending it all as soon as I had 20-30k.

Turns out the transfer was for eight hundred thousand dollars. I convinced a couple mission givers to front me enough money for some level 5 bypassers.

Hacking the bank was surprisingly easy; because I still had the account info from my mission they never even began an active trace and I took my sweet time deleting the statement logs.

Now I have the most expensive computer filled with the most expensive hardware, max level versions of every software (except useless stuff like the dictionary hacker of course), and over 300k left.

The disconnect/quit button is hard to spot but is in the middle of the map.

As it happens, nothing comes of your game, but you get a badge for your personal status screen and a mildly amusing news entry.

Well, it sounds like the key to not getting caught is deleting the routed to log at InterNIC. I just need to get my log deleter maxed out.
If it is maxed out and I do my delete correctly, there is no way for me to get busted by a passive trace, right?

Absolutely no way, if you get there in time. And if it's the first bounce on a sufficiently long chain (say, all the banks, databases and public access servers) then you will get there on time.

Remember to delete only the "connection from 127.0.0.1 router to whatever" logs and the "admin logged in" logs.

you'd think they'd go "You know, this one guy keeps logging in right after every trace that deadends here, maybe he's deleting the logs?"
don't delete the "admin logged in" log. You'll leave a log when you log out and the logs won't add up.

Wrong. Don't delete the 127.0.0.1 logged in log. If you leave the admin logged in log, they'll go "ohay, this guy logged in such that he can delete logs, I WONDER IF HE DELETED LOGS"

There's a "127.0.0.1 connected" log and a "127.0.0.1 logged in as admin" log, it's the latter you delete.

You can still be passively traced if you attempt a bank hack and neglect to delete the transfer records, but in all other situations I think tacking care of InterNIC is sufficient to keep you in the clear. Of course, this is all assuming you have the maxed-out log deletion tool.

Hey, so not worth starting a new thread, but I did in fact give this a shot.. It seems pretty neat, though I haven't gotten very far, but.. What is the point of scripts? I ran whatever appropriate script for port 22 against a computer, and then connected to that port, but I still had to force.lib: anyway. I thought that was the point of the script? Maybe I was wrong..

You probably were dealing with a LAN. The script will get you into the external server, but you'll still need credentials to log onto the LAN. I usually use a key sniffer for that. I believe you create it as a virus and run it once connected to the server and after a minute it'll return you a login and password.

It's also possible you just didn't wait long enough for the script to run. It'll give you a message that it has successfully opened the port, then you should be able to connect to the server without having to use a password.

This must be it. It was a LAN, but I'm far enough to know the difference, it was a connection port, and I had to log in with force.lib: even though I'd ran the script, and then I had to launch the sniffer and log into the lan. Cool, thanks.

Holy crap. LANs in Uplink are different. I really like them though. I was exploring one, but had to get past a lock. Unfortunately, the controlling machine had both a cypher and a password. When I decyphered or cracked either, a trace began. I barely had enough time to get the password before I diconnected to clear logs. Any tips? I just got the Monitor Bypass upgrade for my HUD. If I use that, does that mean I won't get traced for those actions?

Using a monitor bypass in a LAN means you'll only get traced when you try to hack into the file server (the target of your hack) when you run it.

Ha, I started playing this again, and I was adding addresses from internic to bounce through. I saw one that I recognized, Steve Jackson Games, and I logged on to see if they had an actual link or something. When I got there it said the machine had been siezed by the secret service and my ip had been logged. I thought that was pretty funny. Forever ago SJG had been raided by the Secret Service because they published gurps cyberpunk, and the government couldn't distinguish between fiction and reality. This was in the late 80's, so I guess that technology stuff was just too confusing.
