This is the Super Mario Galaxy 2 thread. Talk about the game here. Will I dress up this opening post later? Maybe.
I managed to snag the 242nd star tonight after replaying that damn stage at least 75 times, but it is oh so satisfying when you pull it off. Total play time is 30:06:33.
I ordered Thursday from GameStop with their free overnight shipping promo. It will be here today, hopefully this morning. Not exactly overnight, but whatever. I've been playing the first game in preparation, and I realized I really didn't play enough of the first. I had 72 stars on my save file, now up to 78.
In fact this has been the case in almost every Mario game ever from Super Mario Bros. (NES) to now Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii).
But hey you can always quickly get more lives when resuming in Galaxy 2. I know a trick, but it's a spoiler, so let's just say you'll be able to use your Star Bits and coins to buy chances to win many 1-Ups later on in the game.

I'm working on
green stars right now.
So as far as the ending goes:
So going by the final scene with Rosalina, appearantly, only Mario, Peach, and Rosalina remember the events of the first SMG...maybe even Bowser. Either way, I'm very glad the ending tied the two games together, and made a sort of continuity flow between them. I really hope this isn't the last we see of Rosalina though. I her.
I have never owned a Wii or a Nintendo home console in the past, and consequently have never played a Mario game on a home console. I must rectify this.

I've never owned a console in my life. No Nintendo. No Playstation. No XBOX. Not a single console.
There is a place that I know where people like us can live free.
To defend myself, my gaming habits formed around the rise of the Playstation. And Sony never really had a mascot that moved along with it. Having never owned a Nintendo console meant no Mario. And owning a Dreamcast meant that I had some vague memories of Sonic in his Dreamcast days - they weren't very fond, mind you.

To fix this ailment, I recommend:
Take two Super Mario World's, a Super Mario Bros. 3, and a Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 and call me in the morning. :P
There is much more Mario goodness than that mind you.

When you get your Wii, PM me your Console's #. I'm gifting you Super Mario Bros. & Super Mario Bros. 3.
Make sure you pick up a Classic Controller when you get your Console.
I absolutely have to get him SMB3, guys, but think I should swap out SMB for a different NES or SNES title? I'm thinking maybe A Link to the Past since the original LoZ is a bit obtuse in design these days.
Edit: Or maybe I should just go for Super Mario World & Link to the Past?
Can I also admit to not having played a single Zelda game. Or a Metroid game. Or any Nintendo exclusive. Okay, that does it, I'm going to purchase the first Wii this weekend and make up for a lost childhood.

Greatest introduction to two of Nintendo's finest characters.

well i never did finish mario 2 and 3 on the nintendo when they first came out. i still haven't
I've never beaten Super Mario Brothers. Can't make it past 8-3.
Last year I finally sat down and beat SMB 3, though.
I actually never finished SMB(1) until like 3 or 4 years ago when I was like 19.
I always had trouble with the Hammer Bros. on 8-3 and the multiple paths on 8-4. I actually snapped a picture of my TV when I finally did it. I'll have to dig it up when I get home and post it.
Edit: If I remember properly I actually sat down to play through all 8 worlds. I wanted to finish it sans warping.

8-3 and 8-4 are a piece of cake if you can hang on to a fire flower for both those levels, otherwise Hammer Bros will Hammer Rape you. Oh, and if you have the correct path for 8-4 memorized.
8-4 is the bane of my existence. I get to Bowser and just can't get past him. I never manage to be powered up by the time I get there, which doesn't help. My power-up usually gets blown trying to get past the Hammer Bros. on 8-3.
I prefer the GBA port of SMB 3 to the NES version because of the updated color palette from All-Stars. I always have either SMB 3 or SMW in the GBA slot in my DS Lite whenever I take it somewhere with me.
I'm not sure why, but SMG is clicking with me a lot better than it was when I initially played it. I certainly enjoyed it way back when I got it for xmas in 2007, but I'm starting to fall in love with it now. I think now that I'm actually in the mood to play it is the deciding factor this time around. I had just gotten a 360 a couple months before I got SMG, and was still in the honeymoon phase with it. SMG also looks much, much better now after having gotten a set of component cables to run the Wii at 480p. It no longer looks like a pixelated mess on the big screen TV.

I just woke up.
I have a vague memory of dreaming about farming one ups. I think I found a spot where you could get fifty in a few seconds.

That version still makes me wish Nintendo would release a 2d Mario with a level editor. Some of those e-Reader levels (yes, I bought an e-Reader largely for that game) were actually pretty fun. Mixing in stuff from other Mario games (i.e. vegatables from SMB2, cape & enemies from SMW, etc) was pretty cool.
Anyone who ever tries to say that video games don't cause violent behavior never tried to get the 242nd star. This is some serious bullshit.
After probably 100 tries so far, I got to the part with the red/blue flippy platforms. I got to the part after the second beam thing where there is a small gap between the two radii directly on a red platform after a sequence of harrowing jumps. I figured I needed to catch my breath before moving on, so I went to place my controller down, slowly mind you, and it registered as a waggle spin, flipping the red platform I was standing on and hurtling me into the abyss of madness.
Fuck you Nintendo. Fuck waggle. Fuck sword slashes. Way to break something that wasn't broken. I hope when the next Mario game comes out, I have the resolve to pass it up.

So angry. So alone. Hold me.
That section really is the most difficult part. The little laser radius machines are annoying as fuck, and the flipping platforms doesn't help the situation.
I'd often pass the Yoshi section, switch section, and cloud section without batting an eye only to be completely shut down by that section with the laser radius machines and flippy platforms. Makes the sections that succeed it look absolutely simple by comparison.
Anywho, judging by the time stamp I completed Super Mario Bros. for the first time on December 6, 2006. Quite a shame considering I've owned the game and console for 17 years at that point. Picture in spoiler.
For some reason my reply button isn't working, but to the person above: you can get 100 1ups in SMG2 in a few seconds (ok maybe 90 seconds). Spoiler, I guess...
In the supermassive galaxy, when you get to the small planet with the large koopas on it, just long jump to get on top and bounce until you get as many lives as you wish.

I found it easiest to barrel through that section. It also really helps to bring in a couple clouds from the previous section (you can get there with two left rather easily). This means that you can't flip the platforms near the first two laser machines, but it also means you can just skip the last two (long jump / cloud / repeat). This is a godsend because the later ones are much more difficult, due to the added projectiles.
I think I only died in that section once on my daredevil runs. Most of my deaths were actually in the Yoshi section.

I will go play now.

Quick question... is the payoff for getting every single star worth it? Or is it just a sense of accomplishment thing?
They've hidden the green stars in some devious places. I think I like this as a new game + better than just doing it again with Luigi.
