I dislike that fact that, with all the completely pointless 2D platforming they included, the designers couldn't be bothered to include a single 2D section involving using Yoshi and the pepper to run on walls and ceilings, Super Mario World 2-style.
And they still failed to include a section where you run around the inside of a cylinder while being pursued by an enormous Chomp.

It's like, people accuse Nintendo of playing on nostalgia and not doing anything new beyond what's safe, and then they do some frankly cool 2D shit with SMG2 involving gravity and warped, wrapping perspectives and stuff, and then people want them to do more shit that they've already done before.

Jumping between platforms moving up and down in 2D is one of the first things ever done in a Mario game. Bringing in a concept as old as the very first videogame doesn't really serve to freshen things up.
I'll admit the gravity stuff is neat, though. I do think that Galaxy 1 did much more with 2D gravity, though.
After probably 100 tries so far, I got to the part with the red/blue flippy platforms. I got to the part after the second beam thing where there is a small gap between the two radii directly on a red platform after a sequence of harrowing jumps. I figured I needed to catch my breath before moving on, so I went to place my controller down, slowly mind you, and it registered as a waggle spin, flipping the red platform I was standing on and hurtling me into the abyss of madness.
I've died quite a few times because I scratched my face.

So I'm working on Green Star hunting, and some of these buggers are bloody tough! I so far have all the green stars in the first area and part of the second.
The Hightail Falls Galaxy had probably one of my least favorite stars to get with the pepper Yoshi and having to get on top of the platform you fast run across. I died quite a few times before I figured the best way to get ahold of that star.
But when you finally get some of these stars, the feeling of accomplishment is amazing.
Oh god, I did the Hightail Falls Galaxy run you just described last night. The first green star. Not only did it take me at least 30 tries to finally get to the top, but I still had a bunch of pepper time left and so I had to have Yoshi run in circles and desperately pray he didn't fall off the small platform. Yeesh.
Again I ask: is there any true reward for getting all 242 stars?

can you not dismount yoshi in pepper mode? it would be like sending a car hurtling off a cliff with the gas pedal held down by a cinder block

In the stress of trying to keep the little bugger on the platform I didn't think of that, but I've gotta try that tonight.
I accidentally jumped off because Yoshi was in pepper mode, but I was able to dismount him and grab the star while he fell to his death.
In fact, that's how I grabbed all those green stars.
i did that on either the bulb sweet level or the ghost one but it was pretty epic. my candle yoshi was running out and so was the clock and bamn dismount star grab. sucks for you yoshi but i got my star.
I'm sure this has been discussed to death in the past, but after putting in more time with SMG and just starting SMG2, I realized that I miss having an overworld to run around in. A big part of the fun I had with SM64 was running around the castle trying to uncover secrets. I barely touched Sunshine, so I can't speak of the quality of that overworld except for it looking pretty. I don't know how an overworld concept would work with the Galaxy theme, but if anyone could figure it out it'd be Nintendo.
SMG2 seems to be a bit clearer and sharper looking. I'm assuming they polished the visuals up a bit more for this release? I didn't think there was much, if any, room for improvement over the original.

Also the first green star in the first Bowser fortress gave me trouble. It wasn't too hard to grab, but it was pretty tough to find. I ended up seeing it up top on the castle wall by accident when I was searching frantically. :P
Getting up there to grab it just required some fancy jump spinning on the head of the Thwomp. :P

Yeah that was awesome. You have to more or less exploit the physics engine and use the upward motion of the thwomp to give you a little extra air.

so, is this officially the best reviewed game of all time? I'm not pressing buttons, I am just curious.
It would be hard to make a compelling argument against it. In my humble opinion it transcends pure platforming while deconstructing the genre. The 2-d sections have some of the most interesting gameplay I have ever had the joy of controlling mainly because it breaks my expectation of what "sidescrolling" means.
2d gravity switch in the Bower Castle where you have to change the direction you are tilting the analog stick, from holding it right, to holding it up, then holding it left, all while jumping and dodging fire.
The way it throws new concepts at you at such a pace that it is astounding but never so fast that you can't learn the new concepts before you need to use them.
One example was the meteorites in the Bowser Castles. You had to figure out how to "aim" them to get through the door before you fight a planet sized Bowser
I am amazed at how many new mechanics they fit in here: Pepper Yoshi, The Slide Stage, Light Yoshi and Flip Switch just to name a few. Hell, Yoshi in general adds a whole new level of depth.
I for one have no beef with the story, at no point have I asked myself "what am I really doing this for?" I grew up playing games where there was no other motivation but "Go from point A to point B"
For a clarification of terms, Earthbound is my "Favorite" game followed closely by Zelda: A Link To The Past. While those games hold a special place in my heart for personal reasons, I can certainly think of ways to improve them. SMG2 is the "Best" game I have ever played. I can think of no way to improve it so far.
I understand people will read the above and think "Fanboy fever." fine, whatever. I don't care. If anything, hell yea I'm a fan! After being a fucking laughing stock, called "just for kids," being told they are bad for the industry, and accused of being lazy (I'm looking at you IGN), they fucking blow everyone's mind one more time. okay, okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.
I bought this game and I promised my younger brother that I won't play it without him. It's perfect, because he doesn't like the pressure of being Mario and I don't like to share. It is such a fun game, I love it.

Thoughts and random things concerning the end of the main game. Spoilers, etc . . .
Goddamn were all the galaxies in World 5 and 6 fantastic! Space Storm, Shiverburn, Boo Moon, Melty Monster, Clockwork Ruins, Throwback, and the Bower/Bowser Jr Castles were especially great. The overall difficulty definitely seemed to ramp up towards the end of World 4 and stayed more or less consistently high I would say. The aforementioned galaxies contained some of my favorite stars so far too (I'm into the Special World now, but I've only played Mario Squared so far), especially the ones that dealt with Rock Mario, Purple Coins, and Speed Runs. The finale Bowser Stage was really solid, although . . . I was surprised to see it at the end of World 6 as I was kind of expecting for there to be a World 7 and 8. Going in I thought it might be a "the princess is in another castle" type of scenario but the enormous scale of the galaxy itself, the sheer variation in challenges that the level threw at you, and knowing that I had 106 stars going in (still missing 2 prankster comets in World 6 at that time, one obviously being the Bowser castle itself) made the game feel really complete. Really enjoyed the ending too even if I wished there was more after the credits than the "Thank you for playing my game!" message.
Went back and completed the last two prankster comets in World 6 tonight, now having completed everything up until the Special World that I just started, which felt really good. And wow, I must say that the stark contrast you see going from the intimidating dark black hole that is World 6 to the vibrant Rainbow Roadesque backdrop of Special World is rather breathtaking. Over the course of the game I had come to like the Mario Faceship even more than the grand starship hub of the first game already, and this just cemented that for me. The changing backgrounds, the way that it gets continually more populated with characters and feels like its sort of "evolving" as you go on, and the accessibility it gives to the levels has now made it my favorite Mario setup by a large margin. Can't wait to play more of the Special World over the weekend too! I've been doing anything but rushing through the game so far and am quite content that I have over twice the amount of stars yet to go (at 110 now) before the game is 100 percent complete. Whoo!
