Some of my dormmates have taken to playing Clue. They all have methods for figuring out who did it very efficiently, while I'm stuck on the 8 year old tactic of just asking for whatever combo comes to mind.
I know I should be able to figure this game out, but I'm having trouble getting my head around it. What do I ask, what do I write down, how I do stay organized, how do I know who did it, etc.
I need to win a game, guys. Help me.

Simple techniques to fool people is to say if you have the rope in your inventory. Ask if it was Prof Plum with the Rope in the Kitchen.
If your friend has Prof Plum and the Kitchen, he'll often think the Rope is the real weapon.
If you have the kitchen for example and someone asks you if it's Ms Scarlett, candlestick, kitchen. And you show them Kitchen. If they ask another question about the room say mustard knife kitchen. Show them the kitchen again. It's about not giving away your hand.
Other than that it really is a matter of systamatically ruling things out.
Edit: Shit write down everything.
Every room, every weapon every person. Then rule each one out systamatically by asking questions and by what you have in your hand.
I like to try to identify things quickly by asking about two things I have, and one thing I don't have. Like, if I have the kitchen and Colonel Mustard, but not the candlestick, I'll ask Colonel Mustard, in the kitchen, with the candlestick. Then, if nobody proves you wrong, you know immediately that the candlestick was the weapon.
Write EVERYTHING down, except irrelevant stuff like how many spaces players move. Who asked what? In what order? Who proved them wrong, if anyone? Then, use your awesome powers of deductive reasoning. The wimpy little clue sheet that comes with the game usually isn't sufficient to keep track of everything you need to know. Use a big piece of scratch paper if your friends are cool with it.
Also, some miscellaneous tips:
If you are choosing between moving your piece to several otherwise equivalent game spaces, be an ass and move your piece so as to block other players.
To get lots of guesses in, move to a corner room, then use the trap door to move back and forth so you can make a guess every turn. Preferably do this with two opposite corner rooms you have in your hand, then use my first tip to try to figure out the murderer and weapon.
To add to the above, you can use Hirocon's trick with others' guesses as well if you pay close enough attention. Remember that if someone guesses two things you've already crossed out and someone else proves them wrong the one you don't have is out. Seems obvious, but it's easy to overlook with all the information you're trying to process.
