They went in to E3 with a shit sandwich and knew. Same way Konami went in to E3 knowing they were going to blow their budget on drugs.
I'm also trying to figure out what was SO FUCKING TERRIBLE about the Microsoft conference though. It was boring for sure. Uneventful. Quite pleasant if compared to Ubisoft's.
But shit sandwich? Did Microsoft kill your mom or something? I find it the epitome of ridiculousness that people cant seem to find anything in between BEST THING EVER, and SHIT SANDWICH.
To anyone who was hoping for new game announcements other than copies of Wii games, the Microsoft conference would have been pretty terrible.
(I'm neutral on it, as I don't own their system in the first place)

Also, one get's pretty tired of seeing faked Natal/Kinetect game playing.
Anyway, is anyone else as surprised as me that the PS3/360 fanboy wars have seemed to transfer so seamlessly to Move and Kinect given how little either is really showing for PS3 or 360 fanboys? I'm thinking mostly of gaf.

Microsoft kind of spilled the beans on all of their big projects in the last few months before this show even happened. Individual reactions are going to be wildly varied though, because peoples' expectations of what E3 means anymore are all over the place.
Personally, the show has been in decline for years and I don't expect any company to save all of their greatest reveals for it.

I'd love to go back through people's post histories and compile some giant smackdown post comparing people's posts about how terrible the very idea of the Wii and motion controls and their current squee posts about the Move.
"Gimmick" really is a meaningful way to talk about a game or a system: it's a thing that captures interest and presents something to learn, a novel challenge, an interesting thing to play with. A single gimmick by itself gets old very quickly though.
When someone says Wii motion control, or Kinect motion control, or Move motion control is "a gimmick" they are making a specific, meaningful statement: they are saying this is something that is interesting only on the surface, that looks fascinating in a 5 minute staged demo, but will be found lacking once you get it home and spend hours with it.
Now I think most statements that something is a "gimmick" are simple naysaying. You won't know for sure until you've played it yourself, will you?
But it's still a meaningful word, an important part of a conversation. One might say a good game is a system of expertly built gimmicks, introduced to the user in a way that keeps their interest level up for ten to fourty hours.

But I'm to lazy to do that.
There are a lot of unemployed gamers out there. And there are a lot of marketing agencies.
And a lot of twos plus a lot of twos equals a lot of fours.

Did anyone manage to pay attention to the changes they are planning for Madden long enough to form an opinion on whether they are going to try to bring in more players, halt the franchises slow decline, etc.?

I heard a little about it, but I can't imagine it mattering much in the long run.
Part of the reason it sells is because a lot of it sells to fairly casual football fans. I can't imagine how they're going to be able to communicate the changes to that crowd, or that it's going to matter that much.
It might sway a few die-hards one way or another but otherwise I think the sales are what they are at this point.

Is it clear if the slim 360 is the only SKU from here on out with no arcade/budget model?
People seem to think there will be an slim arcade later on.

Now that I think about it, I've been in a lot of game stores this week, and a ton of people are trading in their old 360's. People on a budget can just by the old shit.
Imagine for a moment that an individual for whatever reason never upgraded from GBA to DS. Maybe they got out of gaming for a while. Maybe they're just slow on the uptake. If the 3DS is fully backwards compatible (no word on this yet, right?), even at an avid gamers place, thats like 5-10 years worth of gaming. At the casual pace, the 3DS is the last gaming machine one would ever need.
I never upgraded from GBA to DS because I just got annoyed with handheld gaming, feels somehow 'limited' and annoying to me.
But yeah, the 3DS looks pretty amazing, especially the N64 remakes; I have every intention of getting back onboard, and the prospect of years and years of DS games to discover is quite exciting!
And as for my trying to put some positive spin on the Kinect / Move situation; man, you guys can keep your cynical skepticism if it makes you feel better. Both Microsoft and Sony have invested some serious money into this venture; there will be decent games.
yeah when i went to get my slim it was the last one at the store, and they had been open for 20 minutes.
i think most people traded up or just bought a new one. i've heard they sold out pretty quickly everywhere near here.
Wii name was first announced. How many seconds did it take you to think and type out the word Wii?
Now how long does it take you to think of Kinnect? How about how to even say it.
Wii was/is/will always be (in my opinion) a horrible name but it has from the very beginning been a recognizable brand. Short, simple and the word it is similar to (We) does not share any letters aside from the W.
Kinnect is a decent name and when you hear it you won't cringe. However I gotta fire a few neurons to get that word out. Forget typing it, I'm either going to end up with connect or Kinetic. I imagine for us video game forumers who will encounter the word often will get used to it eventually. But for everyone else it is a very awkward brand.

Kinect, damnit. Both Wii and Kinect attempt to have something associated with them. They are both fairly obvious. The main problem with Kinect is that it is harder to say, remember (some people kept on adding "-ic" to the end), and potentially harder for foreign speaking to pronounce. It should also be "Kinekt" for maximum kewlness, gosh darn it.
Well the trade in deal isn't that bad. Its $130 for a 360 with wired controller and 20GB HD. So $170 isn't bad to upgrade when it also includes wifi, and a HD is what, a$100? ($40 trade in value for the wireless device) Its the reason I got the MW2 pack. I was probably gonna buy the game, it came with 2 controllers, and the HD. Plus guaranteed to be the latest model.

The 20 GB HDD only gets you like, $10 worth of credit. You'd probably get more than $10 of enjoyment smashing it with a hammer.
So, I've been trying to comprehend MS's strategy with Kinect.
The main problem seems to me to be that the 360 doesn't bring much to help Kinect. Unlike Move their differentiator isn't graphical power, it's controllerless gaming. Live is robust but the feature that casuals might use is behind a subscription barrier which casuals might not be so keen on paying. 360 marketing to date hasn't really targeted the Kinect demo. The existing catalog isn't much of a draw for them either.
What the 360 should bring is a userbase 40 million strong that only need the camera to get going and thus would have a relatively low barrier to entry. This might help Kinect build up a userbase faster and thus make it more likely to be a viable target for developers. Likewise they could sell more hardware and software to their existing customers. Unfortunately, MS has shown basically nothing for their current customers. Any overlap between the 360 and Kinect is basically accidental.
The revelation that Kinect doesn't work for sitting players explains the total lack of core games for Kinect but really I think the problem is a bit deeper and won't be solved when/if MS gets menu navigation working without the user having to stand at attention.
The basic problem is that MS does not have a controller designed to be used while playing motion control games. This means that Kinect games might be able to make a minor use of the 360 controller and 360 games might be able to make minor use of Kinect but the overlap will always be limited. This in turn means that Kinect games will basically be either stationary or on rails and anything that would be a button push on the Wii or with Move will be awkward.
I think that MS had two decent options: 1) They could have release Kinect as a stand alone system using cheaper hardware. 2) They could have designed a split controller without motion control abilities that Kinect could be used while using Kinect.
If they had a lot of faith in Kinect I think 1) would be the way to go. IMO, they have chosen to fall between these two choices giving them the bad features of both and the good features of neither. Or to put it another way, Kinect is neither ready for the Blue Ocean (too expensive) or the Red Ocean (not flexible enough).

Seriously I think the Wii is a worse name than Kinect. But that hardly matters in the end.

I don't understand this either. Ok, so they gave everyone in the audience a new 360. Big whoop?
The internet would be eating out of Nintendo's hand if they did something like that.

Proving your point: it's Kinect, not Kinnect
Unless, of course, one is correct, in which case it would get you $30.
