I want some new speakers.

It was my birthday recently and I have some money lying around, I have wanted to get some fairly decent speakers for quite a while but I have no idea where to start.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Harman-Kardon-Soundsticks-II-Multimedia/dp/B0001W8EFK/ref=pd_cp_ce_1 my friend has these, and they sound pretty good to me but I've no idea if they are overpriced/not really that great actually or anything.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bose-Companion-3/dp/B001BMXQSE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1276168563&sr=8-1 I've also been told these ones are good, but they are slightly out of my price range. Is it worth saving the extra money to get something like this?

You should probably avoid buying anything from Bose if you're looking for decent speakers, as a general rule. Ideally, you want high-quality speakers to be able to reproduce the sound accurately, but Bose speakers tend to do poorly at this. Beyond that I don't really have any useful advice.

Yeah I wouldn't mention Bose in this forum if you want to avoid being stoned to death.

Best thing to do is find a local store with some listening rooms and try out different sets.

Nah, the stones would be best thrown at the speakers themselves. There's a reason their descriptions have a lot of FANCY SOUNDING BIG LETTER WORDS with REGISTERED TRADEMARK symbols and no actual specifications.

Personally I think if you have some desk space the MS40s are an excellent deal at that price point, especially if your computer has a digital out for sound.
