What responsibilities come with the title of captain?
Captains will play through a tournament to determine draft order. Then, they pick 5 other players from the pool of 72 (minus the other captains) who will make up their team. After that the captains main responsibility is to rank their players 1-5 to determine who they will play on the other opponents team. Captains can also set up practices and team meetings and everything but that is not strictly necessary nor something only the captain can do.
A tournament for draft order huh? So does the first place guy get the first pick and so on? If so, that makes it so that the number one captain gets the best player available as a teammate. Doesn't seem to fair. Then again, we don't want people throwing games so they can get a better draft spot.

I was just talking to Trus in PM's: The winner actually gets the last pick. The tournament goes in reverse order so that less skill players get to pick their team first.
Only issue I see with this is a captain throwing his games to get to draft early, but I would hope a tournament system among just PA'ers, we wouldn't have any silly goose d-bags who do that.
If you do reverse draft order, with the best player picking last, you could snake it to make it fair. So if there are 6 captains, with 1 being the best and 6 being the worst, the order would be:
6 5 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 6 5 4... and so on.
This is how we do it in my Fantasy Football league, the person who picked last actually ended up winning the whole thing....I was the one who picked first >.>
Given the relatively wide range of skill levels in the captains, I'm not convinced it should be a snaking draft.

My experience with snake drafts is that they end up being really pretty even in terms of distribution of talent, with variance for better and worse drafters. But if the distribution of talent between Captain Diamond's team and Captain Silver's team is anything like even, outside of the captains, then Captain Diamond's team will crush Captain Silver's team every time.
So here's a proposal to fix this problem: Captain Silver gets picks #1, 13, 25, 37, 49, etc, while Captain Diamond gets picks # 12, 24, 36, 48, etc (contingent on the outcomes of the tournament).

Update:
I'm now Platinum, after a crap selection of 4 games. I lost three, won one, and was instantly promoted. I felt I was a bit above Gold, but I still think it's funny that I was promoted after a string of losses like that.
After making to high Diamond last night, I proceeded to get hammered over and over again today, bringing me down to 84th. What a demoralizing day. I figured I didn't really belong in Diamond, but this is something else.
Also, TvZ used to be my easiest matchup in Platinum. I haven't beaten a single Zerg in Diamond. I have some theories as to why that is, but any of you have ideas?
Is the pool of captains different from the pool of players?
IE: do you need two current players to captain, or two new captains?
I'll sign up as a reserve, but I could captain.

In beta I was a relatively medium-high diamond player. Due to the ending of summer school I haven't gotten to really invest myself 100% into matchmaking yet so I haven't given getting out of the new platinum league a good shot.
I was party to one of Trus' tournaments: the last one with the double elimination mechanics. I was knocked out first game by Sarcastro in a ZvT. I advanced up into the finals of the loser brackets and lost against TheStig in a 3 to 1, an experience made more painful by drawing protoss 4 times in a row. I think I got third place overall? Maybe fourth? I'm not sure if we ever finished that tournament, I recall we didn't play the finals and the match to decide 2nd/3rd because it was late and I don't know if it was ever organized afterward.
Thanks to playing random I am relatively proficient with all three races and I could help my team members improve with all three hopefully.
