Backstab victim dies after a delay Attacking does not break disguise
Essentially: backstabbing the enemy deals no damage (and does not alert them that they've been attacked). Instead, the enemy is marked with a "poisoned" status that inflicts the same damage as a backstab at the end of a protracted delay (anywhere from five to ten seconds, depending how game balance plays out). Non backstabbing attacking with this knife does break the disguise and any hits deal no damage. Enemies can still see the "attach a sapper" animation when you attack, but this may be too subtle to detect (and is far subtler than a spy suddenly appearing in the midst of everyone next to a dead ally). Enemies killed by the delayed backstab always display their special backstab death animation.
I don't see how that removes facestabs. The whole reason they happen is a lag issue so the server still thinks you're backstabbing. That would happen with the new version too.
Okay, so yes they still kill you after ten seconds. However, if you are fully aware of the Spy when he facestabs you, you have ten seconds to make sure the bastard dies as well. With the butterfly knife you just die instantly to a "back" stab that wasn't.
EDIT: Also, I like breaking the disguise on failed stackbabs.

Server Browser
-Server browser now starts centered onscreen when it opens up.
-Filter panel now starts expanded, instead of hidden.
-Added a warning dialog that pops up to warn players joining games with more than the recommended number of players.
-Added a "max player count" filter setting.
-Renamed quick list checkbox from "Show Map List" to "Simplified List".
-Mouseover the checkbox now explains the simplified list in the status bar.
-Quicklist now shows the number of other servers running each map.
-Fixed a couple of bugs related to toggling the quick list, which were resulting in you needing to refresh again.
Team Fortress 2
-Added missing earbud particles for DX8 players.
-Added new ConVar mp_windifference_min to be used with mp_windifference.
-Added Engineer to the list of classes that can equip Max's Pistol.
-Rebuilt sound cache files that were out of date.
Source TV:
-Fixed unlockable items not being visible.
-Stopped "player is carrying X" messages looping forever.
-Fixed overhealed particle effect being visible on your current view target when in first-person spectator mode.
-Changed in-game button colors to be less eyepoppingly bright.
-Improved Steam Web APIs for TF2 items (see http://www.teamfortress.com/)
Engine
-Fixed some graphical issues when alt-tabbing during a game.
-Fixed bullet penetration problems with Linux dedicated server.
-Removed an exploit that allowed people to change their names to something other than their Steam profile name
I guess that means I don't get to play TF2 until the servers restarted hours from now :-(

hes saying that it will do no damage AT ALL unless you are behind them. it doesn't do the butterfly knife's 25-35 damage while stabbing somebody in the front of them.
-Added Engineer to the list of classes that can equip Max's Pistol.
This means they've finished the changes to the engineer model to allow replacing their gear (all the models needed this treatment).. which says to me the engineer update is getting really, really close.
i think it isn't so bad. chainstabs won't happen because you can't walk through somebody who isn't dead yet. and walking around a teammate to touch the back of another teammate and then do it again looks suspicious, i am sure the person you just "killed" behind you will kill you.
The item system in Team Fortress 2 generates a ton of data. Up to this point we've provided access to this data through some hacked-together scripts that, frankly, were old and creaky before they went live. Ah, but now...
Pow! Shiny new web APIs that are officially supported. (Find out how to use them here.) This new system comes with a few new features:
* Output can now be provided as JSON, XML, or VDF (Key Values)
* The current item schema is available as an API call, so you don't have to dig items_game.txt out of a patched client
* It is much easier for us to add new APIs with the new system, so it should happen more often
For now, the old system will continue to run, and all applications built on it will continue to work. A word of warning, though: At some point down the road we will turn it off. So if you're using it, please give the new Steam Web APIs a try.
Kupi, the thing you seem to be missing with that idea is that a ten second delay is nothing but a good thing. Instead of it being immediately apparent to everyone around that "oh, that heavy just died, better get that spy running away", it's "oh, that heavy just died, I'd go after the spy but he's already on the other side of the map stabbing the medic". And people aren't going to have a chance to kill the spy before they die because they won't know they're dying until it happens. There's literally no drawback to that weapon.
Mars: you backstab a dude with the butterfly knife, he dies instantly. He cannot shoot. He cannot harm your team in any way. More importantly, he cannot damage you/. A shit-ton of stuff can happen in the span of ten seconds. That's more than a full Ubercharge's time. Like Neal pointed out, it creates some issues for the Spy of not being able to move through the enemy team quite as easily. With this knife, yes you get the obfuscation effect (which is the point), but even after the "backstab", the enemy can still kill you. I think you're underestimating the importance of killing the enemy immediately.

Of course, the engineer update drops on a day where i can't fucking play because my connection decides I'm a piece of shit and fucking dies every time another computer is turned on in my house.

And you still don't understand my point, because I don't think people complain about normal frontal stabs, but whatever.
It comes
Golden Wrench!
And the first five people to find it in-game will be rewarded with a tour of Valve and a lifetime supply of Valve games.

I'm betting the Golden Wrench will be one of those secret items ala the Soldier's Medal.
They might just be planning ahead this time.
I smell a Portal 2 ARG style reveal for the Engie update.
Holy shit a King Midas wrench? I must have it...
am i stupid or is it some kind of new game mode?
